I am planning to put a layer on top of sand for them to breed, and the sand will allow me to anchor some plants.

Okay, so now I have some Nothobranchius Rachovii from the auction, always been a little curious about them. I am putting a tank together for them. My question is on peat moss. Is there a certain kind just for aquaria, or can you use the garden variety? From what I understand, you take the peat moss and boil it to get rid of impurities and oils. I am not sure if gardentype also has ferts that might cause problems or is unsafe for fish.

I would keep a close eye on it, and do partial water changes, about 20% a day.

You must of had an amonia spike.

Some reasons are: cleaning the filter to well (just give the sponges a quick rinse in a container of aquarium water. If you clean them overly, or with tap water, high temperature water, or totally replace them you will loose all your good bacteria)

Over feeding

It depends what kind of cichlids you would like to have.

Most african cichlids don't do well with plants , they prefer rocks

South american, central american like plant.

For a 30g I would go with dwarf cichlids, there are both american and african.

How much water are you changing?

How often are you changing?

are you adding prime or another declorinator, etc?

are you cleaning the filters at the same time?

and if so how?

Thanks Nick, Maybe I'll try that. Dad was the one keeping an eye on the eggs and keeping mom away, he wasn't be aggressive, he would just use his body to block her. So I am thinking mom managed to get by him.

the eggs were gone this morning, oh well. They lasted longer this time. Will have to see what happens next time. Hopefully they will make it to the hatching stage.

I am hoping the parents will learn so I don't want to remove the eggs, as long as they show improvement each time, I will let nature take its course.

I am getting better at spotting when they are preparing to spawn, and if nothing else, can always get a tank set up to move them and raise them myself.

I am just watching them, to see what they do, trying to leave them alone. I am feeding them a bit extra, to curb their appetites.

We are currently trying to breed them, but not with much luck so far. We have them in a species tank, with plants including Java Moss which they have been reported to lay their eggs in.

Mine have just spawned again, came home to a leaf full of eggs. Last time they different survive the night, hopefully this time they get to the 24 hour point.

Sounds interesting. I usually check out the lfs in areas that we have been too. When I was in South Carolina, I must have spent an hour trying to figure out what kind of fish were in the pond outside Wards Aunts place. I believe they were texas Cichlids but not 100% sure, I will have to travel with some reference books. Next time I go somewhere, I will bring books and try to check some ponds out.

I would love to travel and be able to learn about and see the local fish in their natural habitats, like you I have mostly Africans, and am just starting to dabble in CA's and SA's.
