  1. hehehe, patience is a virtue! We have to tear down the half wall, and put up the proper one first. THEN set the tank up. I wanna get it up and running so bad, my @$$ aches.
  2. I have about 6 weeks or so til I set up my 230 gallon, and this is what I plan to do for cycling........tell me if its stupid or not. I have 2 established tanks, a 61 gal and a 29, and I was going to use the water removed during water changes to cycle. (vacuum the substrate using a clean receptacle to catch the water, strain all the poop and mulm out of it, put the chunk-less water into the big tank, along with fresh water. I also plan on using one of my nasty filters, uncleaned, with dirty filter media , and run it on there for a couple of weeks. Does this sound ok to do? I plan on putting some of my fish in my main tank into the new one, so the water should be the same in both tanks that way. I also some of the decorations that I got for the big tank put into my 61 gallon. Its crowded in there right now, but they have oodles of places to hide, and the decorations should be nice and scummy by the time I switch out to the new one. Input, please! I gave it some thought, and this is all I came up with, I hope it works
  3. Heres a couple of snaps of the stand hubby made me at work, for my new-to-me 230 gallon monster. (Thanks Neil!) Its made of steel, it holds 10,000 pounds of weight per square inch and the wheels hold a little over 4,000 pounds each, distributed weight. We estimate that the filled tank will weigh slightly under 3,000 pounds. The stand will be behind a wall, and cabinets will be built in underneath, so its more esthetically pleasing, as well as functional. We plan on builing the tank right into the wall. Enjoy!
  4. I have an empty 20 gallon seamless aquagiant tank thats screaming to be filled, and I'm kinda interested in a nano reef! is this tank ok for salt water? I'm a reef-virgin, so I wanna start small............ any help would be appreciated
  5. somewhere between Fort McMurray and Calgary, there HAS to be someone who can build me a big'un. We just bought a house, and plan to separate 2 rooms in the basement with a huge muhfuh aquarium, and we'd like to have it built. If I have to wait, thats ok, this is an investment, not a frivolity, and I'm not paying for it, so I don't care.........heheheheh we can pick it up almost anywhere, I just need some contact numbers. Anyone know of any places?
  6. Just found a large casserole-sized tupperware-type container at WallyWorld, for 9 bucks! Thanks a bunch to all who replied!
  7. we're only going about 6 blocks away, they'll all be in a heated car.
  8. I take posession of a house within the next few days, and I thought I had a pretty good plan for moving my fish, then I remembered Spot. Spot is a ten inch Pleco.......... Anyone have any suggestions for moving him? I have fish bags for everyone else, but theres no way he's gonna fit in one of those. I'm clueless as to what to do!!! Please help! signed, the useless idiot
  9. python.......that sounds even better! I was worried about chemicals in the water, but on one site, it mentioned to have the additives ready in a cup of water to add while the tank is filling.. I'll be sure to give it a try! Thanks!
  10. heres the deal........ I got me some dandy 10 gallon buckets for water changes. I think they used to contain some form of carpet cleaning solution. They're terrific for using it as a receptacle for emptying, but could I clean them to make them safe for filling with treated water? Right now, for filling, I put a big fresh garbage bag inside, and fill it that way, but its really messy! (I also run out of garbage bags more often than anyone should......) Any advice on cleaning these buckets?? I cleaned them with water and a scrubber (no soap), left them outside in the rain for a week, took them in, cleaned them with water again, and let them airdry. There is no smell of anything at all, but I still don't trust them for some reason.
  11. beautiful fish! And beautiful tank! Can I have it?
  12. 1975 - Easter - My parents bought me a 20 gallon metal frame tank with submersible filter (nasty yucky things) with 3 small goldfish. I was only 4 years old, but I remember picking out the fish myself, and naming them. Miki, Kimi and Ikmi, I don't remember why, thats just how it was. I fed those suckers baloney and crackers every chance I got, and they grew to epic proportions! (don't yell at me, I was a tot!) At least adult fist sized...... They passed peacefully away many years later, and I remember dreaming that the walls in my room were floor to ceiling fishtanks! I lost interest when I discovered boys, makeup and music, and turned to rats. I had about 5 or so. Age 18 I decided I wanted fish again, so I got a 33 gallon at a yard sale and got me some gouramis. I left home at 21, left my tank behind, and just got reacquainted with aquaria a year or so ago. I have a cichlid setup, and a shark setup, a 10 gallon growout tank, and just got a 20 gallon glass bowfront for something, I don't know what yet . Oh yeah, I have 3 tree frogs in an big exo terra terrarium. Soon, my recurring dream of wall to wall and floor to ceiling tanks will become a reality, if my husband doesnt protest too much........hehehehe
  13. A friend got me a feather rock boulder a few weeks ago in Calgary, and I was trying to get time and motivation to break it up into smaller pieces. Needless to say, I never got around to it, so my dearest darling husband took it to work (he's a welder) and cut it and hollowed it out for me, just take a look-see! I'm so impressed with the job he did, I'm making him do another one........hehehehe Its soaking right now He cut it with an industrial band saw, and hollowed it out with a grinder, then used a fine grinder attachment on an air tool. Took him a grand total of 40 minutes!
  14. I was vacuuming my 55 last night, and decided to haul all the rocks out, and rearrange them (finally). When I picked up the very last rock, I discovered 7 teeny tiny yolk-less fry doing the spiral swim, trying to get away from me! I ran and got a tupperware bowl to put them in so I could move them to my fry tank, but one got caught by my snow white. And then there were 6. I'm really surprised any of them made it this far, with the savages in my tank! They all seem to be different, but all roughly the same size. (about 3/4 cm) One is definately a kenyii, but only time will tell what the others are. Just had to share p.s. What should I feed them? They have some nasty java moss in with them,(lotsa grub stuck to it) and I do have flake that I powdered up for them.........any other suggestions?
  15. well, she has been refusing the male, opening up a can of whoop @$$ every time he went near her. 2 loads of babies is enough for me, I guess its enough for her too........lol
  16. hmmm......looks like I have 2 male auratus in my tank now, I can't tell them apart. is it possible for her to change to a male, or is it just a camo-type thing? one things for sure, she's gone butch, and I don't know which one she is anymore............heheheh
  17. just an update.........she seems to be doing fine now, only one of the fry had its yolk sac intact, and he's doing really well in a breeding trap in a separate tank. the darkness and calm really helped her, now she's back in general population with her boyfriend, and he's taking surprisingly good care of her thanks for all the help!
  18. no changes at all! same food, same lighting, same roomies, same everything.........I'm stumped. She's had 2 broods so far, no problems, she seems absolutely normal, except for the color. She's almost completely brown now.
  19. I have a proven female auratus, I've had her for a year or so, she was beautifully, brightly colored, if you googled female auratus, you'd see her. Now, for the past 2 days, she's almost completely brown! you can barely see her stripes. Her attitude is the same, energy level, etc., but her color is shot! should I be worried?
  20. I saw the really red guy brutally attack the victim. It was definately him...hehehe I'm waiting for the cray to get a lil bit bigger so he can be plopped into my cichlid tank. (he's just a lil' bitty thing now) Crays do really well in there, they've always had one as a neighbor.
  21. Dirty dirty boys, I should've known better..... Is a 29 gallon too small for them? I was thinking about tossing in my big Venustus so he can open up a can of whoop-@$$ on them, but figured they'd just be swallowed whole.........lol
  22. the cray is hiding like his life depended on it, and the barbs don't stop chasing each other. They were trying to eradicate another one of their own (there seems to be 2 barb bullies), I've since separated them from the general population, now everyone is much more relaxed. The brightest red ones are causing all the disturbance. I'm gonna bring them back to the pet store and get something a bit more mellow......
  23. ok, I'm starting a community tank, and I got 6 rosy barbs, 2 whiteclouds, 4 danios, and a blue cray. these idiot barbs are murdering each other. Everyone else seems to be fine. Theres lots of hiding places, and its a 29 gallon, so there should be more than enough room for everyone! I found a chewed up floater this morning. Any suggestions?
  24. Maybe putting a cover around all exposed glass? I'll do it right away, poor thing, all concussed........thanks again for the input! I really had no idea what to do
