  1. her color is really good, gills seem fine, no inflammation anywhere, she acts like a perfectly healthy fish with a hangover. My husband called from work and told me she was doing some serious jumping against the tank lid this morning to get away from the male. Maybe she whacked her head a few too many times??? She definately was eating her eggs! I stripped her to attempt to save some lives, and most of her fry had no yolk sacs. The rest had nice big ones. That explains the milky fluid.
  2. my female cobalt is holding, and has been for a couple weeks. now she's swimming on her side, straight up and down, in spirals, all in super slow-mo, and theres a milky substance coming out of her gills. I've put her in quarantine, what do I do now?
  3. heres a snap of my White's Tree Frogs, Patrick, and Mister Froggy Murphy. They're a bit fatter now, and I love them to pieces!
  4. Don't you just LOVE my garbage bag background? I bought a real nice 3d one, now all I need is 3 days of free time to put it in! My fishies are healthy and happy, and I just wanted to share my atrociously ugly cichlid tank with you all. As you can see, I have a voracious digger in there, he's a beautiful electric blue johanni with severe OCD. Thanks for looking!
  5. my friend just went to Calgary last weekend, and returned with a nice gift for me..........a huge chunk of feather rock! (and an 18 inch lightstrip, thanks, Devon!) Is it safe for my cichlid tank? I know how to disinfect it and make it water safe, but I don't know if it affects ph or anything. any help would be appreciated
  6. crap...........I found her in my bedroom, behind my bed. All dried up and no signs of life. I put her in water anyway (just a little tupperware, enough to cover her) I think its an exercise in futility, personally. Thanks to all who replied, I appreciate it. RIP Fluffy II
  7. Emergency? Maybe. Possibly too late to do anything about it. Last night, I fed my crays and went to bed. This morning, I checked on them, and my big beautiful bright blue female is AWOL. I just transferred them to a 29 gallon tank, and didn't have the top secured. They were living happily in a ten gallon before that. My question is, how far can they travel? I checked a 5 foot radius around the immediate area, and came up empty handed. How long can she live all dry like that? I'm pretty tore up about it.
  8. GAH! THATS WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE RIGHT NOW!!!!!! Sorry, they remind me of nasty tapioca, and yuck me out in a big way. I have a fry tank with whiteclouds in it, so I think I'll do the styro-paper towel-breeding trap thing, and see what happens.... Ever see Ace Ventura, When Nature Calls? Remember the part with the bat? Thats what I'm like with these gooey things..............heebie jeebie! I really like Gary, though. thanks for the help
  9. A little off topic, I know, but I have to share. A few months ago, I rescued 3 large female jewel cichlids from a neighbor, who was housing them in a 5 GALLON TANK! Man, the nerve of some people...............
  10. ooooooooooh........now theres 2 nasty clumps! I'm just gonna elave them there for now, and see what happens
  11. My 3 year old son was admiring our 55 gallon, like he usually does. We bought a big off white snail a couple weeks ago, and he named it Gary. Gary is a busy snail, so he's really interesting to watch My boy shouts, "Mom! Gary has little babies!!!" I take a look, and there's a big clump of snail eggs at the top of the tank............what the hell do I do with them? I don't mind if we have a zillion snails, my cichlids will take care of the majority of them, I just wanna know what I can do to keep them relatively safe. Can I move the cluster? I have a fry tank I can put it in, but I don't know how to go about it.
  12. I have a 29 Gallon WalMart special, I had a plastic background taped to the back of the tank for a looong time, and when I tore the tank down to clean it (I'm want to use it for fish now, I had tree frogs in it) I noticed a chip in the plastic base, as you can see in the pic. I don't know how long it's been there. Will this affect structural integrity? Is it useless now? The silicone seal inside is still intact, and the glass doesnt seem to be damaged. What should I do? Please help!
  13. I just paid (via mastercard) 21.09 over the phone for ten cups of Java Moss from Pisces pets in Calgary. It's being shipped up here to fort mac on greyhound on monday. on their website, www.piscespets.com , they state that they can ship almost anything almost anywhere. They have a toll free number, and they have oodles of plants! Its truly worth your while checking them out. I hope you find what you're looking for
  14. I've noticed a few posts here, in the livestock section, that some of the fish have been wild caught. My question is............where in the name of smack do you catch them? Isn't this a canadian forum? You'll have to excuse my ignorance, those posts kinda freaked me out a little
  15. I'll just chuck them, then, tell my boy that they just died.........he's 3, he'll never know the difference!
  16. My auratus has spit out her fry........they have huge yolk sacs, but seem to be wiggling around ok. You can see the head colors, black and yellow striped, just like mommy, so I know they're all auratus. She swallowed some, so I don't know if I should put her with them to see if she'll scoop them up again, or leave them in the fry net, on a plate, and see where it goes from there. There are 17 in total, all seem to be doing ok, as far as I can tell. please, PLEASE assist! This is my first time ever seeing fry, let alone taking care of them!
  17. Hi, I took my kiddies to the lake this weekend, and they found some really cool underwater plants. Some that look just like the ones I have in there already! Would it be safe to put into my tank? How would I treat them before to kill off any crap they might have picked up? And also, thank you to Fatpuffer for the crays! They hate everybody and are thriving
  18. oooooh...........dirty mind! I should really think my phrasing out first before I type, lol but the actual definition sounds painful and unnatural, I won't be stripping anybody anytime soon!
  19. Thank you for the fast feedback! It all makes perfect sense I'll take the rocks out of the smaller tank altogether, and continue moving the sand back. It's time consuming and annoying, but I'd rather do that than see the poor thingies hurt! Duh, I hope in a few months I'll be able to use my head and figure this stuff out for myself.....heheheh
  20. sorry if I sound stupid...........what exactly is stripping a female?
  21. I have a 55 gal cichlid setup, with beige playsand as a substrate. I've been using it for about 6 months, but my idiot johanni keeps digging it up, and making ridiculous piles in front of the glass. Looks awful. I have a couple of big bags of black lava rock, and was wondering if I should use the smaller pieces as substrate instead. I just started a 10 gal, for fry, and used the rock as substrate, and it looks fantastic! What are the pro's and con's? Anyone here use this stuff before or currently? I need some feedback, seeing how I need almost constant input from everyone giving me good suggestions! I'm not good at this stuff yet
  22. I have a pair of auratus and a pair of cobalts, both females are holding, and have been for a couple of days now. I had a holding red zebra, who swallowed her eggs, so now I'm keeping a much better eye on things. When do I take the mamas out of the main tank and put them in their own? I know to take them out when the eggs hatch, but I don't know how long they incubate or anything else for that matter. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  23. Sick! really? I'm gonna be a gramma? Thats fabulous! I have a smaller hospital tank set up, its always running, so I can just plop her right in there! She hasn't been attacked or bugged by anyone so far, and the red marks don't seem to be wounds, just reddening under the skin.maybe its the eggs showing through..I don't know. I wonder who the dad is? She's the only red zebra in the tank. What are hybrids like anyways? Thanks for the fast response! I was starting to freak out, hehehhe
  24. I have oodles of pairs of fish in my 55 gal, and a lone red zebra. My poor zebra has red patches around his gills, and a swollen lower jaw. He won't eat, and is acting weird. Is he going to die? What can I do?!?!?! I'm absolutely clueless about it, I've only kept fish for about a year, and haven't encountered any real illnesses...........
  25. It took me 3 weeks, but I finally did it! I used white vinyl rain gutter, 100% silicone, aquarium safe, natch, small chunks of lava rock, and I used onyx sand as space filler! Its my first time making anything, but I think it turned out ok! I'm super-proud of it, seeing as how I have no real skill in anything DIY, sorry if it sucks, but me and my feeshees love it!
