ABwildrose
How can a person detirmine if an ornament is safe to use in the aquarium? My sister has a table water fountain thing that doesn't work anymore and wants to put it in the tank. Would the paint on that be safe? She also found what looks like it might be an old aquarium ornament but I am not sure. Is there any way to tell if it would be safe? Thanks, Shelley
Qattarra
Any ornament needs to have the same charactoristics as substrate, it needs to be inert. Anything that is straight clay based such as teracota is good and is porous so will grow algea. If it is glazed it must be lead free glaze, so ornaments made for aquarium are, and home made can be too. Plastics are OK but resins are not. Those lawn and garden ornaments Walmart sells , deteriorate quickly and release toxins. You can use slate, granite and most any natural tiles you can get at flooring outlets, non glazed though as they may be lead glazes. Glass is good too.
