kimmi7
So as the tilte says I have one fat dwarf red gourami. He is by far the fattest fish I have seen. Now I don't over feed my fish, in fact they could go a day or two without getting fed. So I am not sure why he is so fat, mind you if he was sick he would be dead already as he has been this way for a few months now
aquabrain
if he was sick he would be dead already as he has been this way for a few months now I highly disagree. Something like a tapeworm could live for years inside a fish (and make it look bloated). IMO, it could be worms. But, perhaps, like you say, he's just chubby. t-man
Might have dropsy. Edited August 25, 2011 by t-man
kimmi7
What's dropsy? And how would I tell if he has worms? I mean this guy is more then just chubby. Would like to help him out as he is a sweet fish, doesn't pick on any others.
DanGofCalgary
my dwarf gouramis get that. They usually have a very short lifespan once they fatten up like that. I've always wondered what that is too.
BettaFishMommy
i would say parasitic infection. can you see any 'red threads' hanging out of his anus?
kimmi7
No nothing hangs out of his "butt". In fact he to look at looks extremely healthy. Do you remember danofcalgay how long?
aquabrain
I found a topic about the same problem in another forum - link. Sounds like DanGofCalgary is right. Might be contagious, too. I'd suggest putting him in quarantine, just in case. Maybe use a metronidazole/praziquantel medication to rule out worms? (On a side note: I've recently bought a med called "General Cure" that lists bloating as a sign of tapeworms.) If it's dropsy, there's no cure. Is your gourami pooping and not constipated?
