nadeem
Hi Everyone, First of all I want to thank the people on this forum for answering majority of my questions by the previous answers that they have given to others. I would like to use this rock as base rock: http://www.mops.ca/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/sk...1a29+1124842200 I will also have live rock in there from Gold's (as you all have suggested). Am I better off buying live rock (I have to buy approximately 70lbs) or can I get away with using this base rock and let it become "live"? Also, the tank I will be purchasing from MTAR is 66 gallons (48"x16.5"x20.5"). I was thinking of purchasing 48" AQUALIGHT 4x65w (260W). Is this going to be sufficient for some corals or do I need to buy MH? Thanks, Nadeem
BlkWolfe
Hey Nadeem, Grab the 40lb box of that stuff (im interested in this now that you brought it up), and fill out the rest with real store bought live rock. If you went solely with the reef bones youll be missing out on all the life and critters that come with live rock. Let it all cycle together and the bacteria will colonize the dead rock giving you your biofilter, then just give it some time for the corraline algea and all the other little forms of life to start growing on it. The light would be a good start. Should keep all kinds of softies (shrooms, leathers, etc) and LPS (Brains, frogspawn, hammers) corals happy. And if you order some of that rock, post up some pics id love to see what kinda shapes the rock comes in.
AndyL
130$?! + Shipping to boot? Zoiks! Head down to burnco - or in calgary Ornamental Landscaping (between deerfoot mall and the airport tower) Tufa Rock (very similar to what these guys are selling) is often used as 'base' rock. I prefered the look of the "moon Rock" and no deaths in the 65 tells me it's reef safe too. You'll pay under 1$/lb for each... 3$/lb + shipping - you'd be cheaper to just get all live rock from golds. Andy
BlkWolfe
Heh, i didnt work the price out. Just looked at the pics and it looked nice for dead rock. $3/lb is just a wee bit pricey Been a long day :bang1:

Stick to the soft corals until you get bored (could be years) and you won't have any problems. Go to Canreef and look for frags for sale.
