prodogg02 Posted October 15, 2006 Report Share Posted October 15, 2006 anyone know what this snail is doing got 4 of them had them in dif tanks but only one was doin good in my 20 gal so i put all of them in there every once in a while one of them climbs to the highest rock. stands stands way up on the rear of its body and some kinda horn lookin thing comes out of its head and goes way up wil do this till it falls over or it sees me lookin at it then it just moves away and hides will attach a pic but crapy hard to catch them doin it Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Melody Posted October 15, 2006 Report Share Posted October 15, 2006 Exactly - the breathing tube is called a Siphon. The best description I've heard for it, is it is like a snorkel. Applesnails are capable of breathing both under water, through a gill, and atmospheric air with a lung. The siphon is used to fill the lung with air while the snail remains under water. If they're all at the surface a lot, your tank is low in oxygen. Otherwise, they'll go to the surface periodically to exchange the air in the lung - he should be doing a little dance with his head going in and out of his shell if that's the case.
