  1. are you a engineer?

We had a engineer and a draftsman help us design the stand. I think they would know what they are doing.

I'm going to laugh about that for a while. I'm going to publish a book about the things I've seen engineers do for/to fish tanks. Whatever classes you need for that degree, common sense is not among them.

Good luck with the stand. I'd never do it, but I've seen it done and it worked well. It should be a really nice tank.

    still laughing

  2. The phone number for Bow Valley Aquariums (Mitch) is (403) 272-4960 .

He has nothing to do with Cameron Management.

Thanks for the number. If I ever meet Mitch I may have to buy him an answering machine.

What about "Gary"? Who is this? I want a well-made tank. I have made two requests for quotes so far - one from Calgary and one from Edmonton. One is a higher end "do it all" sort of outfit and the other doesn't actually make them at their shop but they farm it out. My preference is to deal directly with a high quality builder that doesn't drive a Porsche. Is this Gary?

Thanks for all of your comments and thoughts so far.

As an aside I have started to shift my rock from the 180 to the 135 - I am going to try to take the 180 offline and get the movers to take it to Calgary. My fish look confused. This is not any fun at all :(

    Jeff

We build in-house at Elite Aquatics and we can do pretty much anything you want (polishing and what not). Give me a call 253-8123. I don't drive a Porsche... yet.

  3. Yeah, sorry about the jack, Darcy.

Risking extreme anthropomorhpism, I can see this animal think. It calculates and gauges its environment constantly. It communicates and feels. The range of expression it can convey is absolutly astounding (writing this had better not be making people want one). I can't imagine how a brain can articulate eight legs with that kind of dexterity at once. I think a new term for grace should be created for this display of elegance.

I think that LFS at times need to look past whether they can make money on an animal or not to whether they should or not. I know that comes up all the time with big fish, hybrids, overcrowding and everything else, but octopi are different. With octopi you are seriously keeping something smarter than yourself. Were it not for their lifespan, they would be us as dominant on this planet. Stores and aquarists need an honest answer as to why they should be in captivity that's better than "cause its cool". This problem, like many, is compounded by the fact that they are cheap.

Ancient cults used to worship them as gods. After all the lunches I've had with the one here, I can see why.

*****Again, not a slam to people that have/sell/want one. Just my lowly, humble thoughts.*****

  4. A TON of people are taking my cubes because they are a cheaper way to experiment with saltwater. If you don't mind only having a few fish, but a bunch of neat inverts and some coral you can really get a nice setup for under a grand. Compare that price with trying to convert your 90 into salt.

People that have never kept fish are being very successful.

You can get cubes now with everything that bigger systems have. I've got one with a skimmer and a fuge on it.

Keep your 90 and get a nano.
