  1. I've currently got a breeding pair of green severums, and a pair of leptobarbus hoevenii (mad barbs/maroon sharks, I can't find a "common" common name) and a royal panaque in there right now. The tank is 180 gallons with 2250gph of filtration, and decor is purely large, medium and small pieces of drift wood. I have a couple pieces of flat rock in there for egg laying, but will not likely add anything else. I might consider some large and hardy aquatic plants in the future, but not likely.

So, I am trying to decide on some tank mates. I am thinking about a pair of gold severums, and maybe a pair of apollo sharks. I considered Bala sharks but I don't like how they look when they are fully grown.

Fish that may grow too large for this tank are not out of the question, as long as they don't get too big for another year and a half.

I want to be sure to time it right, but any tank inhabitants that get too big will be moving to my indoor pond. This pond won't be completed for about another year and a half from now, and I have no alternative space for them (that is humane) while I wait for the pond to be finished. The pond is going to be massive, so not a concern about potential size. (well... no RTC's or anything gargantuan, the pond is going to be at most 3000 gallons, but closer to 2800)

I'm not interested in any cichlids other than severums for this tank, mainly I an interested in sharks or larger peaceful fish. I quite like Chalceus macrolepidotus (Pink-tailed Chalceus) but haven't seen any in stores before.

I really like the look of apollo sharks/leptobarbus hoevenii, and most catfish. I am not adverse to other large compatible fish. I'd love more than anything to raise some kind of bicher in there with these guys, but I'm sure Christian will tell me any moment that my fish will be its food, or it will theirs ;-)

Any compatible eels to be had?

I'm possibly hoping for something a little less common than other 180's I have seen. I know so many people with nice 180's, I want something different. I get my fill of beautiful cichlid tanks and large species tanks elsewhere ;-)

I plan on hitting up Riverfront and Golds weekly for the next few months in case something rare or interesting shows up I can snag, but would love to be on the lookout for something in particular.

    Any help appreciated!

The Lfs that was here until 1990 would bring in available species upon request and had Pink Tailed Chalceus on a regular basis, are they not available anymore? It might be an idea to ask Riverfront or Golds if they can get what you want.

  2. When I was in the hoby before i had a series of lights on timers starting and finiishing the day with low intensity lighting for an hour moving up to growlux lights and then to growlux and daylight combined for a total of 16 hours a day. I could enjoy all of my fish then and didnot have any startled fish from instantly lighting it up at full intensity.

  3. I see a lot of concerns about the stand failing but in fact the sides of the tank work like bearing walls and hold everything rigid. What I see is that that stand is more than sufficient structuraly to hold that tank. if the stand were to sag the glass would have to sag first, ain't going to happen.

  4. I had a friend who owned the store he closed it in 1990, and i've had the glass in the shed since then. I traded him an old car for about 2 tons of glass. I only have about a third of it left now.

  5. I have built over 20 aquariums and it sure is a cheap way of having a setup for a fishroom. I just built a 36g tank 14.5"*14.5"*40" 6 weeks ago out of 10 mil glass shelves from a jewellery store that closed. The only expense was a tube of G.E. 100 silicone which is aquarium safe for $16 then I used the rest of the tube to repair 75g tank that I bought with a broken end panel. The stand for the 36g was constructed from parts of an entertainment stand that had been discarded. I just constructed a stand for the 75g tank from desk parts.

The 36g tank. Will be posting the 75 soon

  6. Where in Edmonton can I get parts for an Aquaclear 500 filter? Mine has a badly worn shaft and sounds like a coffee grinder when running. And also where is the cheapest place to buy filters?

  7. It's great to find a local forum. I jus got back into the hobby about 3 months ago after being away from it for about 15 years. All I can say is man has there been a lot of changes technology, tank design, new species etc. and especialy costs OMG. But any way I,m from Fort Saskatchewan. I joined the Edmonton Aquarium Club this month, and went as a guest last month with a friend. I hope to get to know some of you and share with you. I am an acomplished aquarium builder, and have built aroun twenty tanks in the past ranging from thirty gallons up to two hundred thirty five gallons.

  8. Here's a picture of my 46g bow front tank. It is home to Apistogramma Cf. Pertensi, Pelvichromis Pulcher, Corydoras Aeneus, Blackskirts, Glowlights, Otocinclus Affinis, some ancient about 2 years old Zebra Danios, and a 7" Multiradiatus Pleco named Mr. Biggey that I rescued from my 5 year old Grand daughter when it was about 5" long and living in a 1 gallon hex.

  9. I have M. Altispinosa, M. Ramirezi (gold)' Apistogramma Cf. Pertensi, Apistogramma Agassizi, Pterophylum Dumerelli, and Pelvicachromis Pulcher (yes I know they are West African). I have just returned to the hobby 3 months ago after about 15 years. I have always been intrigued with the S. American Cichlids, so here I go. Oh yeah by the way it is true that tanks breed faster than fish LOL. I currently have a 46g bowfront a home made 36g tank and a 15g quarantine/breeding tank running but a 75g tank just hatched. I'll have to see what it does.
