  1. I woke up to my swordtail female looking a lot thinner. So I went looking for fry in my java moss. Instead of fry I found a critter. Unfortunately I do not have a camera, so I was unable to get a pic. It looked like a damselfly nymph. It had a elongated body and grasping legs. Big bulbous eyes and a three-pronged tail. It swam with a wiggly motion, like a snake. I killed it immediately. Is this a risk to my fish? Did it eat my tiny helpless fry?
  2. I know Henry still has them listed on his website www.naturescornerstore.com. When I spoke with him last he did say there was at least one. I think, but am not 100% confident that he will be getting more in soon. They do seem to be quite popular. Edited for spelling
  3. Yes it is the very same tank. The pics are all the same.

    New tank

I have a 56 Gallon Aquarium, with the dimensions of 36" Long, 20" high, and 18" wide. It has a 36" Black strip light with a working Aqua-Glo bulb, and a Black wrought Iron Stand. It has a sliding glass lid. It comes with: -Aquaclear 500 Filter -Fluval 2Plus Underwater Filter -Whisper 40 Airpump -Fish Net -Gravel Vacuum Optional (Extra 25 bucks) -Large Ornament (various to choose from) -2 Juvenile Parrot Cichlids -2 Pictus Catfish -Plastic Plants Any white marks that you see in the pictures are either: -flash -salt deposit (comes right off, I'll wash it before you get here) -Condensation, as I just drained the tank. There are no cracks, no scratches. Great condition. I'm asking $200.00 OBO....$225 with the optional stuff. Is this too good to be true? The pics posted with it are goregeous. The person has it posted over on Used Edmonton. I am a bit nervous about buying secondhand from a total stranger. (I don't count members in good standing on AA as "total" strangers.) I am nervous about it due to the woman trying to scam us with getting Aquarium stuff for her "sick kid". Sorry if I am being silly I've never bought anything that big secondhand. If this deal is good it will cut down the length of time I have to wait for my 55g from 2 months to 4 days.
  5. I have been looking at filtration for the 55g I am going to get in a few months. I want to know if I should go with a hang on the side power filter or a canister filter. I would also like to know what everyone else uses in their freshwater tanks and why. Everyone was so quick and helpful with the glass vs. acrylic question. Thank you very much.
  6. Thanks for the info everybody, I think I will go with glass as well. The higher expense of acrylic doesn't seem worth it for a 50 gallon. That way I have a great tank and more money to spend on fish, wich is what I really want to spend my money on.
  7. Whilst looking online for 50 gallon aquariums I noticed that many offered are of the acrylic variety. My 20g is glass and I am quite satisfied with that, but if acrylic is better for a bigger tank perhaps I should go that way? I was wondering what people on AA thought, and why you prefer one over the other. Also what is the availability of each?
  8. I had the same problem. Then when I saw the file in my realplayer, I clicked on "play" and it started rolling the video. Even after it came up with the little prompt that said "cannot play file" I got rid of the little prompt and clicked play. Hope it works for you.
  9. I just noticed the two girls who are acting the strangest have slightly lifted scales on their top and belly. Is this dropsy? Their bellies are not bloated at all. In fact one of them has a smaller belly than when I got her a few days ago.
  10. I always have salt in the tank. I was told that livebearers like it. I did add more and will be doing water changes every few days. I will also look for the little white dots. I turned up the heater and moved a lamp that I think may have been making the water temp fluctuate during the day. I am determined to at least be able to keep some livebearers alive long enough to get some fry. Hopefully my fish will die of old age.
  11. Hello. I hope I am not being too fussy. Today when I got home form work 2 of my swordtail girls were swimming in place. Since my guppies did this just before death, I immediately went into panic mode. I performed a nitrite test it came out at zero. I added some stability. (I add it every day for a few days when i introduce new fish) Then there was no improvement so I did a 25% water change which was scheduled for tomorrow. Now all the fish appear sluggish, and the two that first showed signs are swimming in place near the filter and resting on the bottom also near the filter. The tank has been cycled. There were recent problems with nitrites. But as there are none now I do not see that as a problem. (I don't think???) Only one of the girls is "clamping" fins. The others are just sitting there. I also just added some Java moss. They are also not "wobbly" like the guppies were. Stop dying fishies! I also added more stability after the water change.
  12. Thank you for the advice. When I looked up how long to leave them in the net people said two to three days. That did not seem long enough to me. I picked up some java moss today, hopefully that will provide some cover for the little guys.
  13. I love livebearers, but I know so little. I was just wondering how long to leave my fry in the little breeder net. I would rather not have all of them eaten by the adults. How big do they have to get to have a fighting chance? I don't actually have any right now, but have recently purchased some fat female swordtails so I should have some soon. In my 20 gallon tank there are 1 Mato Grosso Pleco 3 corycats 4 Swortail females 1 swortail male (I call him "Lucky") There is not a lot of what I would call "cover" for the little guys. Just some plastic plants and gravel. Also: Would my 20watt halogen light be enough to keep some java moss alive?
  14. I just bought one there today! It is my very first pleco. I am glad it will stay small. I am so exited! I did not know they changed color! Even Husband had an interest in this one.
  15. Thanks for the welcomes guys! I just got back from Natures corner store where I bought my first Pleco. I had no idea they changed colours like a chamelon. I am even more hooked now! Added: Oh and by the way, I purchased 4 swortail girls to keep my little boy busy.
  16. Bring a mirror with you if you can. If you hold the mirror up to the tank the males will display for you. Then you can see them at their best and brightest. A mirror also works as entertainment for a betta. Just don't leave it too long outside the tank or Mr. Betta will tire himself out.
  17. That is very good. I had some baby guppies for a very short time. Either bad luck or my ineptness seems to have killed them off, but I loved them! They were so tiny and cute and fantastic. I love watching the males court my girls too. I am glad to know that I would not have to have the house teeming with fish. Huband would have a bit of a problem with that!
  18. Is this easy to do? Getting rid of fish? I really enjoy the courting process and watching the little tiny fry swim around the tank., but I do not want to be loaded down with fish and having crowded tanks.
  19. Hello all. I am new to tropical fish keeping. I was hooked by a flashy little petstore Betta who I named Jeffery Dahmer. After a year or so he died of dropsy, but he got me hooked. I now have 3 corycats, and a single male swordtail in a 20 gallon tank. These were the only fish to survive my strange bout of nitrite problems. I am spending most of my time dreaming about a 55 gallon community tank with a few "easy" plants in it. I would like to do a ton of reading and learn a lot before I venture into plants. I do have a question. If I have some livebearers who drop fry, how do I get rid of excess fish? I would like to consider culling as a last resort.
