  1. Hey all, I need some info on Lamprologus ocellatus cichlid. I have bought some and how like some info on them. I already did research on them and got some info from the seller but the more info the better equipped I am. Where is a good place to buy shells for them? And how big of opening do I need? They are about 1- 1.5" long Is there a special food they eat? I already have a Veggie flake, NLS pellets 1mm, or Nls Grow. Treats? I got Mysis and brine shrimp. Special water conditions? currently at PH 7.9 nitrate10, nitrite0, amm 0. with water changes weekly 20% Can they be kept with a petricola or two? I have some smaller ones in my big tank 1.5-2" Or any other info that will help these guys would help me out! Derek
  2. I was cruising and found these. rotating tank Anyone want a nice centerpiece. Or maybe we can go halfers??? Derek

    Tanks

From my calculations it is only a 112 gal not a 150 like the seller says. It would all depend what all came with the tank for extras, if it is only the glass, 450 is too much in my opinion. If it has good lighting, a couple good filters and some heaters, and maybe a stand, 450 isn't too much for me. In these cases if you feel it is too much, it probably is. What I would do is, look at buying everything that is in the offer and see what it would cost new to set it up. Is it still too much??????? Derek
  4. I haven,t set up my fishroom yet but I am planning on using aquaclears for the 8- 50 gallon and the 120 gallon. I am also setting up 5- 20 gal, 4- 15 gal and 4- 10 gal which I plan to run sponges for them. All the Aquaclears are the same size so I can buy in bulk and and the sponges are for easy maintanance. Derek
  5. central air worked for me!!! You can look into water chillers but cost the same as central air
  6. Hey all, I am thinking of buying either some Gold Head compressiceps or some Black Calvus cichlids. They are wild caught, so they are kinda pricey. Not a thing I want to jump into completely un-informed. Some of my questions are: 1. Are they compatible with electric yellow, electric blue and red empress cichlids? 2. Are the water perameters compatible? 3. Is there special care for them and the fry? 4. One a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being easy 10 being hard, how hard are these guys to keep in a aquarium? 5. Same scale, how hard are these guy to breed and care for the fry? 6. How can one sex these fish? 7. Is there any local breeders already that you know of? 8. Is there going to be any intrest if I were to successfully breed these? 9. Any suggestions on either of these? Any other information on these fish would be of great help in making this choice. Thanks Derek
  7. I am not sure if there would be any chemical reaction. They are bones, so maybe calcium buildup or possibly ammonia and nitrate spikes if there was any rotten stuff on them??? I would boil the heck out of them, then put them in a 5 gallon bucket with a established filter for a few weeks and see what happens with the water quality. Anyone else cause that is a cool decor. :w00t: Derek
  8. My wife asked the insurance company if special insurance was needed for when I build my fish room(600+ gal) in the garage. They said if it was in the garage, no special insurance was needed. But if it were in the house, it was not needed either, just highly recommended. The cost to clean up and fix a leak or major spill is too high for me, so I would put the insuranse on. Fifty bucks ayear is cheap compared to a $30k+ reno cost!!! Derek
  9. I have some Malyasian Trumpeter snails. They seem to take over the bottom ,hence the clown loaches. The tank seems to be really balanced at the moment for aggresion but I am going to up the water changes. Maybe it will induce a little "jiggy- jiggy pushy push" :hey: Harold, that 600 gallon is gonna be eight 50 gal and a 110 plus a few 20 and 30 gals but will be exciting to get the project started. Derek
  10. Thanks for the input Harold. I know I have to get some more room for the Blue dolphins It is only a matter of time and money and I will have a fish room up and running. I thought a person shouldn't do that big of a water change all at once. Won't that be hard on the fish?? Thanks rED O. I love the colors in the tank and the movement and excitment in the tank is wicked. I could sit and watch it for hours. If only I could get this darn job off my back. LOL thanks all Derek
  11. I have a 90 gal tank. I have the following equipment on it: -Aquaclear 110 (1900 lph) -aquaclear 70 (1140 lph) -aquaclear 30 that I am cycling temperarly (570 lph) -Ehiem ecco 2236 canister filter (600 lph) Total is 4210 liters per hour or 1100 gallons per hour! I am turning the water over 12.2 times per hour. I have two heaters that keep my tank at 74 F. I do the following maintanance on it: -20 percent water change weekly -50% wc monthly -Each filter gets changed/cleaned once a month at different times -I use Prime and Aquaplus for every water change. -Gravel gets a good cleaning once a month -Decorations get moved and set up every month. I have not had any major illnesses in the tank other than one cases of Dropsy that stayed to one fish. My levels are usually: Nitrate 10-20, Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0- .25 and ph is 8.0-8.2 As for fish in there I have: -11 or so synodontis peticolas at about 2 in each -5 BN pleco at 5 in, 4in, 3 in and 2 at 2in -1 L333 pleco (tiger pleco) at 2 in -8 Blue Dolphins at 1.5-2 each -12 Electric Yellows at 6 at 2.5- 3 and 6 at 1.5- 2 -6 Electric Blues (2m/4f) 2 at 6in and 4 at 4 in -7 Red Empress (1m/6f) male is7-8 in and females are about 5 in each -2 Clown loaches at 2 inch Total of: 156 inches about or 1.73 in/gal. I know cichlids can be overstocked to minimize agression in a tank, I don't have any, but how many cichlids are too many? Is this mean to do to fish or am I still good? This is onlt temperary until I get my fish room built in the fall, then i will have load of room(600 gal approx.). then I plan on breeding these fish. Any input or insight on this is great. This will help me and hopefuly others out!! Derek
  12. I made a real big rookie mistake!! I got some new Electric yellows on the weekend but was kinda cramped for space. I had a 15 gallon grow out tank and a new un- cycled 15 gallon tank that I was going to use for fry. I had just tore this fry tank down and bleached it an scrub it and rinsed the heck out of it. I then set it back up with a undergravel filter. It had been up for about a week prior to me getting the new yellows. I took the 10 fry I had in my grow out tank and put them in my new tank, I then put the yellows in the grow out tank to quarintine them. Everything seemed ok, there was some higher levels of ammonia and nitrite and nitrate. I thought I could handle it with daily 25% WC and some extra Prime and Aqua Plus. Today I go check on my fish and my fry are shaking like they are in a seizure and darting all over the place. I tested the water and  not good. I immediately did a 75% water change and tripled the amount of Prime and Aqua plus, And re-tested an hour later. Still bad!!!! I netted these fry and put them back into the cycled fry tank as fast as I could. Damage: one electric blue fry dead two looking close and two Blue dolphin fry still shaky and darting One tank sitting there empty with me with a hammer :bang1: Will fish recover from a shock like this or did I learn what not to do the hard way??? Derek AKA DUMB DUMB
  13. I tumbled my first batch of Electric blue cichlid eggs. They are now little fry with egg sack still attached. When should I start to feed these little guys? Recommendations on food?? I have Cyclop-eeze and Rotofiers(frozen). I was thinking baby brine shrimp(frozen). Thanks Derek
  14. Electric Yellows I got from fairdeal Full tank shot The Red Empress (not a great shot)
  15. I went and looked at them this morning and noticed what I would call a head and a tail on them now. Hopefully I get my Red empress eggs to hatch too.
  16. I rigged up a egg tumbler of sorts for Electric blue eggs. I figure she had been holding for about 10- 14 days. My question is how do I know which eggs are going to hatch and which ones won't?? And each egg now is getting 2 black spots on them. Are those eyes??? I would like to see some other peoples tumblers they have and build a nice one for myself. Where did you get the supplies? Any help is a great help. Thank, Derek
  17. I just took a 40 Gallon tank completely apart, I tried using a razor to scrape off all the silicone but I still have some residue on the glass. What is the easiest way to get this off??? Does it have to come off? I really don't want to use a chemical stripper but the razor just ain't cuttin it?? :w00t: When I put this all back together do I have to clamp it together or is the top and bottom moulding enough? Any input would be great. Derek :well:
  18. Wow thats alot of great input guy and gals. I still have a lot of research and calls to make and major kissin up to the better half for allowing this. I would like to think I wear the pants but....even with pants, she is still the boss. Thank you all Derek
  19. Thanks Snaggle for that info. I don't wanna tell the wife she was right about the permit though.LOL
  20. Hey all those that have fish rooms, I am looking a setting up a fishroom. It is going to be eight 50 gallon tanks one 100+ gallon tank and maybe two 30 gallon tanks. All tanks will be running HOB filters and a main air pump. Each tank will have there own heater, but will have 6 foot lighting on three levels. Oh yeah did I forget to mention that this is going to be set up in my garage! I plan to build a 7x7 room with two access doors on either side of the stand. One to get to the front and one to access the back and be able to work on the back. Ultimately I would like a separate fuse box in the garage with GFI outlets. And would also need to run water out there too. I plan on over insulating the walls to save on heat costs during winter. My questions are: 1. Do I need permits from Strathcona County for the building and electrical and plumbing? 2. Do I have to notify my house insurance about this room and its contents? 3. Since breaking the concrete floor is not an option, can I bury weeping tile on the side of the house to dispose of water? 4. Is my concrete stong enough for this kind of weght? 5. Since most electricians would not understand this kind of project, any suggestion on size of electric panel? 6. There is a natural gas line that will be running through this room, is this going to be a problem? If some one has answers to one or all these question, please help me! Any other comments would be greatly appreciated. Derek
  21. One word.......Stunning!!! So, by chance do you do any side work. I need some ideas when I set up my fish room. LOL Derek
  22. I do believe that you have to inform your insurance company about any and all tanks you have. I think they said my 90 gal is alright but if I went bigger or more tanks there would be a minumal charge. $2 a month Derek
  23. Well now, Thats a little cool, a little weird, and a little ummm whats the word I am looking for.... OBSESIVE!! Do ya ya really need to see your fish well you do business.?? I would pass on that idea but there is always some one who will buy it. Derek
