  1. Well, after a long absence, I am back into the aquatic world.  I have acquired a 75g tank and stand, and will be looking to populate a cichlid tank in the nearby future.  I've been a mod on here for a while, but I have been quite the absentee landlord, as things have been quite busy the past few years.

If you're in the Central Alberta area, I'll be looking for some mbuna, so let me know what is out there.

  2. $25 at Gold Aquariums. Dennis said the price has dropped considerably in the past year. Seeing as they lay between 100 and 1000 eggs and are easy to care for, they should be flooding the market.

I picked up one on Monday. So far, so good.

  3. I didn't say anything about our armed forces. I refered to political leaders and business staff in a democratic society. MOD OF WAR doesn't sound democratic at all. Mod of Defence, that makes sense.

We're not business staff, we're volunteers.

As for sounding democratic, wasn't meant to be at all.

Here's harmless little Sackboy from PS's Little Big Planet:

From the really popular game "God of War":

And nickame for moderators is "mod", so really it's a very small jump to dressing Sackboy up in that costume. As you're an online gamer, I figured you'd make the leap pretty quickly. My mistake:

So "Mod of War" is a humourous play on words.

  4. I told you why. Military leaders dress in military garb. Your avatar, as a mod, is one of a warrior. MOD OF WAR!! We live in a democracy, Canada, Alberta. None of our leaders dress in war clothing. We go into public business and none of the staff wear military clothing and carry weapons and have signs on that they are STAFF OF WAR!! or POLITICAL LEADER OF WAR!! Infact, our grand parents fought and died to stop leaders and people like that. Nazi Germany was like that, China, Russia, Cuba, Libya.

In Canada we are not ruled by military dictators and our businesses are not run that way either. Your avatar gives me the impression that when you're on the job here, that is how you run things. It makes me uncomfortable and pushes me away. It goes against everything that is Canada.

You're inferring that all of our armed forces are of the same mindset as Nazi's, Communists, or Fascists? Ok, that's your choice.....you're not the first person I've met who doesn't support our armed forces. Free country, you can have your opinions. However, be warned....that's highly precocious to assume that about anyone without knowing them, and simply from a picture with a little title on it.

Now to answer my question, why do you not just go off and start your own website? You sound like you have lots of ideas and spirit.

  5. yes I have, but I want it right here in Alberta. I want the hobby to come alive here! Alberta is a world wide recognized place, for good and for bad. The reach of those sites you mentioned can be duplicated here within 5 years which will open up Alberta as a recognized aquarium place to be and this site could be the draw.

You're more than welcome to start your own site. Posting a comment where you are looking for the asking price of this site infers that you have the cash resources available to start one of your own, and obviously you have shown the interest to do so as well. Plus, you've inferred that things here aren't running to your tastes.

Therefore.....why NOT start a forum of your own? :)

  6. It can also depend on how you feed your fish. I like my cichlids mean and lean.

Meaning that a full 4" red zebra might be swimming around when I leave to teach in the morning, and by the late afternoon when I come back the others are dragging the skull around attached to a mostly picked clean skeleton.

So bodies can disappear quite quickly, depending on the appetites and stocking.

  7. My suggestion is post on Canreef and ask if there is an experienced reefer willing to come visit for a short time period to check over your system setup and give you some hints. There is NOTHING like experience, and you might be surprised at the little things that get pointed out that will make a BIG impact.

Supply some wine or beer. :) If I was handy I'd drop by.

  8. Even if you get an anemone, there is still a chance the clown won't host in it. I've seen clowns host in hammer corals, torch corals, even my pair hosted on a rock with some zoanthids. Condyactis anemones are not good for hosting clowns, I think the bubble tips are better. Also keep in mind your anemone will move until it finds its perfect home that it likes.

Anemones are difficult to care for. You need to do a LOT of research before getting one, as the above post is correct - lots of them won't host in it.

(I've had clowns host on a piece of live rock before....a bare live rock)

  9. Rather then having 10 different pm messages

Okay, I'll be the selfish staff member here....

Last thing I need in MY inbox is 10 different messages complaining about so and so saying something ignorant or rude in a chat room, and having to moderate that as well.

Basically, having a chat room would not double our workload right now....it would actually increase it much more than that.

Why? Because it would need to be moderated all the time, especially after the complaints I saw when I returned to the staff here a few months back.
