  1. My wife really really likes these guys. I picked up 2 for her about a year ago when we started to get into this hobby, but sadly they died after about a month. I would like to get her some more but would like to get some information from people who have had them. 1. Do they need brackish water? I've tried to research this and keep getting mixed information. Some sites are saying they do very well in fresh water, others are saying they have to have brackish. 2. tank setup? what temp? diet? Tank size for 2 figure 8 puffers. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My wife thinks these guys are just the best thing going, and I really don't want to pick them up and end up killing them off because we are doing something wrong. Thanks ~~Ray~~
  2. Great feedback, thank you everyone. I like the idea of getting rid of the air pump in exchange for the power head. My tank isn't planted. strictly rocks and sand for them. I will also look around for the best price. the one at petsmart stated that it moved 380 g / hr so I thought that was pretty good for a 55 gal. But if you were able to pick one up for 10 bucks, I'm going to look around for sure. Thanks again everyone. ~~Ray~~
  3. I'm looking for advice. I have a 55 gal community African cichlid tank. I currently am running 1 Via Aqua 750 Canister, 1 Fluval 204, I am also running two air stones as well. Now I seen a power head at Petsmart that automatically rotates the output nozzle. Would this be of any real added value to the tank to put something like this on it? I know the African's like a bit of current, and thought this might help keep everything moving nicely, but don't want to spent the 60 bucks if it's really not going to be useful for the tank. :well: Thanks for any input. ~~Ray~~
  4. Thanks, I'm very excited. The electric blues have been a fav or mine since I started my African tank. My wife got me the pair about 2 months ago, so this is so cool. ~~Ray~~
  5. Just had to post this. My electric blue just spat her babies for the first time. So far I've counted 9 and she is still holding some. I'm a grandpa....... ~~Ray~~
  6. There is a male in the tank, I have seen him chase her a couple times but not endlessly like some of the fish I've had. But I never thought of that. Very possible that he just wont leave her alone. Might try moving her to another tank for a bit and see if the behavior stops. Then try to re-introduce her back . ~~Ray~~
  7. Maybe someone can shed some light on this. In my community tank, my female electric blue is constantly at the top of the water almost like she's trying to breath air. She does this for awhile then comes and swims around the tank with the rest of the fish then goes back up to the top. The rest of the fish are fine, they don't appear to be struggling to breath or anything. She appears to be healthy, I've never seen any of them do this. She has been doing this behavior now for about 2 weeks. Any ideas would be appreciated greatly. ~~Ray~~
  8. Thanks Nick, and that is great to hear that she is doing good now.
  9. Thank you everyone. I think this site is great and look forward to learning a lot from all of you. ~~Ray~~
  10. We have our albino veil tail oscar (12 inches) currently in a tank with 5 blood parrots (5 - 8 inches). So far there has never been any problems. The parrots were in the tank first, and when we added the oscar he was only about 2 inches, so he has grown considerably faster than the parrots but leaves them alone. ~~Ray~~
  11. Well just wanted to say hello to everyone. I finally got my own name. I was using my wife's login "Whiterose" for awhile, and decided I should get my own. I'm in Edmonton, I got my first tank about 16 months ago, I now have 7 tanks and am still learning so much. I mostly have African cichlids. One tank is dedicated to my wife's 5 blood parrots and 1 Albino veil tail oscar. ~~Ray~~
