I feel your pain!
My 175 greeted me with a leak this morning.
Everything is for sale now, posted in Equip for sale

According to Target, they sterilize the sand before they screen it and, I think, sand blasting sand is almost all the same grit in any given bag.
They have a red garnet that I think I'll ask about.
Thankx folks

Has anyone bought sand from Target in Morinville?
I was thinking of getting a course blasting sand for my 175 when I set it up again.
Blasting sand should be all one size grain with no 'fines' shouldn't it?
What do you all think?
Thankx

Welcome aboard Johnny
Does this mean I can use my Little Johnny jokes now?

I looked up hydra and that's exactly what they are.
Thank you
Now I'm off to clean the tank better.
All ways been scarred to vacuum for fear of sucking up the shrimp.

I don't know where to put this so I'll ask here.
I've got these strange little critters showing up in my shrimp tank.
They are white and their bodies are tubular, less than 1/8 inch long. They have 5 "antenna" a good 1/2 inch long.
I don't know if they are harmful and I haven'nt a clue where they came from. The tank has been up and running for 2 years.
WTH!!!!!!!

Hi all... was hoping someone in Calgary may know where to source a single caulking tube of aquarium safe black silicon or possibly has a half tube left over. Preferably GE Silicon I (product # GE312A) or another brand equivalent such as their construction series? I have plans to reline my QT/Hospital/plant nursery tank that has badly blue stained silicon in the near future and figured the black would look much better. Dont think I will need a huge quantity for a 15G and assuming I can do it right the first time with no do overs...
I have been to Rona, Home Depot and Canadian Tire and all they seem to carry in black are GE Silicone II and DAP windows and doors which both state they have mildew resistance which is apparently something that can be harmful to the inhabitants of the tank. Probably will hit a couple other hardware shops to see what might be carried but I am not too optimistic in finding anyone that carries GE I in black.
Thanks!
You have Gregg's Distributors there in Cowgary.
They have Dow 732 Sealant.
I paid $6 or so a tube.

How has this worked out for you? Just curious.
Thanks for asking
It leaked again so I emptied it and I'm giving it lots and lots of time to dry out this time.
I think maybe that was my trouble, there was water in the joint that stopped the silicone from sealing.
The fish are OK so I'll wait till the middle of Sept. to try again.

I think it's easier to use than the Vortex. It's self primeing so you don't have to play stupid games like the V.
Of course, as with all good things, you can't buy it any more.

The diatom filter uses diartomatious earth to filter the water. So the pound that is refered to in the other comment is diatomaious earth (fine white powder) that blankets a micron filter cartridge inside the filter canister. It filters out fine particles such as algae blooms, bacteria blooms and even ich. You have to run the filter on a bucket or other water holding container and add D earth to the bucket until the appropriate amout of earth has covered the micron cartridge, then switch the filter over to the tank and filter it. Depending on the make and mondel size, it will clairify the water in a few short hours, to over night.
That's correct, except for the pre-charge thing. I can't remember the brand name, I'm at work, but it has a jar that the powder is put in and a filter element that the powder charges, Easy peasy, just put 3 TBS in the jar, screw it on, hang the unit on the aquarium and turn it on
I found a pic of mine. It's a "System I Diatom Pressure Filter"
Works very well, sometimes the drive belt gets a little noisy, but it doesn't bother me and it's only for a couple of hours.
Just let me know if you want to borrow it, Tim. You can get a 10oz. can of powder from Big Als.

I think if you're going to live in Calgary you're beyond help .
-
No such thing as a descent price on those things.
I've got a diatom filter you can borrow.
It'll just cost you what's left over from the pound your going to have to buy.
How's that?
-
Thankx,ya, it must have been something like that.
Third times the charm, right?
I agree. Silicone all the seams at once. They do sell tile grout spreaders that are meant for corners. You might want to try using that instead of your finger. Maybe there was a air bubble under the seal and it started leaking from there. I would also apply more silicone to the outside edges, then scrap off any excess.

I use Dow Corning 732/black
Got it at Gregg Distributors.
-
I'll have to look when I get home
-
I guess the next step is to get the fish back out of the tank.
Thankx a bunch
-
Well thank you, I was wondering about using two passes.
Admittedly, I was going to go heavier on the first pass but what you say makes more sense.
Have you ever used the silicone remover that DAP has out?
-
Sorry to hear about your fish loss! Because you have a filter and air pump going there probably was enough oxygen as it was constantly being replenished. Could it have been ammonia?
>>No, I checked, they had only been in there about 6 hrs and the water was from the tank.
Are you stripping the old seal off the entire tank?
I would, but not the inbetween seal.
>>Yes,I put a bead about 1/2 inch wide on and smoothed it out right away.
Are you using a brand new hardback blade and then using a solution to strip all the film off?
>>Yes, I used 8 or 10 blades, then used turpintine first and then rubbing alcohol. Thought I was doing a good job.
There was one area along the backwhere the edges were not sealed, but I thought I'd got that, guess not.
Are you using clear silicone or black?
I only use black anymore and any new tank I buy is always black silicone as it is about 40 times stronger than clear.
>>I'm using black. Can't remember the brand, I'm at work so I can't look at the tube. It's a well known brand at $7 a tube from Gregg's, not some cheap crap so it should be good.
Are you running just one bead of silicone then tooling it and leaving it to dry?
>>One bead and letting it sit for two days after I'm done.
I let it sit for 3 days full of water with no fish too, and then three days after I put the fish back in it started leaking worse than before I "fixed" it.
While you are at it seal in the entire inside of the top plastic trim if it isn't done aready.
Thankx for trying to help.
I think this next time, I should just do one seam at a time and let it sit for a day before I do the next one.
What do you think?
-
Ya..........not so good
I lost about half my fish through my own stupidity. I put too many in the one bin and I think they used up all the oxygen.
Also, after re-sealing that stupid tank three times, it still leaks when it's full of water..
Six inches is all I can put in before the hydraulic pressure gets too great.
There are absolutely no cracks so I must not be taking enough care, even though I cleaned the seams scrupulously.
Next week I'll give it one more go.Stupid fish.......it's all their fault.

From the Digital Journal

Auckland - Scuba divers may commend the silence of the deep, but new research shows the underwater world is abuzz with the noise of chatting fish.
-
Right on
Thank you folks
Now the fun starts
-
I looked at my 175 this morning only to discover a one per second drip.
Looks like the tank needs re-sealing........oh sigh!
Is there a maximum length of time that fish will survive in rubbermaid tubs as long as there's filter, heater and air?
I'm going to have to set up three, two for the fish and one for the plants, for as much as two weeks.
What say you?
-
Safeway, big box stores, any where that sells plants.

Thank you
Sure makes the rug stinky but I can't clean it till I get all the stuff out of here.
Thankfully it didn't go through the concrete floor to the suite below.
