  1. Hey Hal,

    Welcome!

    Hi everyone,

I'm Hal, from the McKenzie area of Calgary's SE.

I recently bought some green Heros from a fellow who recommended I look at this site if I wanted to get into larger tanks.

After a quick look around at the forum topics boy, was he right! A lot of knowledgable and helpful (a rarer trait) people in this group it seems.

I'm in the market for a larger tank (family birthday present this week, I hope ).

I look forward to exploring these posts, getting to know the group a bit and learning alot in the coming weeks!

    Til then, travel safe!

    Northranger

ps - I heard about the Zoo's new tanks and plan to donate some cichlids to their efforts.

65 gal hex - Community tropical 3D background (Hatchets on top, neon/cardinal school, Columbian tetras, bleeding heart tetras, flying fox (2), Chinese algae eater (orange 4" (I just passed on two other 7" of the same type, one orange, one a green pattern like a pike), a Cory cat and some ghost shrimp

55 gal - Cichlid tank with 3D background in development - on line to cycle up starting Jan 19th or so.

30 gal - Cichlid - Odds and ends from friends- still learning about these ones.

10 gal - Cardinal school, ghost shrimps, flying fox, Cory cat

10 gal - Pseudorgil furcatus - I believe often called "Furcata Rainbows", snail, rescued female Betta, Cory cat, Flying fox

??? gal - looking around for the right combo (at the right price lol) now.

I run Aquaclear filters on my tanks, tending to go heavy on the filtration with frequent water changes, (like using the 110 models in the 65 hex and 30 gal.)

pps - I am fairly new using forums, like this one. I've read the rules here and think I understand them, but if any member ever feels I am close to or have crossed any of them, a gentle word of advice will work far more effectively on me than a kick in the b***s lol!

Trust me, I'd appreciate it... and I know my b***** would!

  2. Thats awesome news, keep up the good work!

This fish is at least 4 years old according to the previous owner, but he couldn't remember the name. This morning the fish is more bronzy orangy yellowish in color, and I think I can see hints of some darker horizontal banding along the mid line of the fish. I'll see if I can get a better picture of it. I did notice this morning that his eyes are not as cloudy and the excess body slime seems to have cut down considerably  He is also way more active this morning then he was last night.

  3. Here is the wee baby filter I mentioned, I do have it on my 5.5 but my 4 betta do not make much mess, I also do regular water changes, think it cost me like $8.00 :

The Red Sea Nano Filter is a highly efficient mini-filter. It combines mechanical, biological and chemical filtration for superior results. Suitable for aquariums up to 3 gallons. Adjustable flow control allows for use in various styles and sizes of aquariums. Easy to install and maintain. Silent operation. Made for use with Red Sea's Deco Art Aquavase collection.

Hydor Mini Heater-7.5 Watt is the wee heater I installed too. I figured instead of worrying if they were cold, so I bought this one. Once again it was $9.00 I think

  4. I am a newbie, have no clue about fish, but looking at the pictures of a Boesmani rainbow fish, and your picture, I would say your probably correct on ID, size seems off though. Maybe a better option may be the Australian rainbowfish, bigger in size, maybe a bit off in color but not drastic as the boesmani. Not only is it cool to try and see if your correct, I learn more about fishes!! So, thanks for asking, gave me a chance to learn about yet another fish. Found this site for info on the Boesmani. and Austrailian

Take a peek, hope it helps a bit.

  5. in my 5.5 I bought a little nano filter and undergravel heater. as far as small plec's, a Bristlenose pleco is good, only grows to 5" in size, cool looking too.

    Profile on Bristlenosed pleco

I have a five-gallon tank with no fish in it but my betta. It's probably going to start growing algae someday (Although probably slower because there are no live plants, just a silk one). What would be a compatible, hardy algae eating fish that would stay under 7 cm? I'm leaning towards an otocinclus or, if an algae eater wouldn't work, an apple snail.

What kind of algae eater would work and would I need a filter or could I just do frequent water changes?

    Thanks!

  6. They must be young ones?

I looked them up because they are nice looking fish, but all I get are adult pics, no juvies and the thread-finned cichlid has..well you guessed it, fins that look like threads.

Very cool looking fish though, where'd you find them at?

    that is a Acarichthys heckelii

kewl fish, i like them alot... there are 4 of them.. the seemed to calm the tank down a bit when i put them in there.. (newest fish buy)

  7. LOL...Oh noooo. Thats humorous but I am sorry for your loss

I was just posting the other day about how my stock of cherry shrimp had been on the decline since I moved recently. I was also basting about the deep crimson of one of my females and how she didn't even have te stripe that was typical of most RCS (although I've read a post that suggests this was due to extreme age). I didn't mention that I had been housing my cherry shrimp along with a number of amano shrimp, a colony of endlers, a big bunch of kuhli loaches and Joe. Joe is a little betta that my girlfriend spotted at Henry's and just had to have! I felt bad keeping him in a bowl with a few plants so I moved him to the shimp emporium. I didn't realize it at the time but the decline of my cherry shrimp coincided with the addition of Joe. It hadn't occurred to me that the RED in red cherry shrimp might be an issue to Joe. It hadn't occurred to me until last night when I saw Joe triumphantly biting the eyeless corpse of my favourite little crimson cherry shrimp. Joe took extreme delight in striking his fresh kill, repeatedly grabbing the little body until he was sure it was dead, then going back again to check.

I was perplexed as the only issues that tank had at first were that the endlers babies seemed to dissapear but I had already credited those kills to his lordship. The amanos moved around that tank with impunity, even going so far as to perch upon the kuhlis. And the kuhlis seemed to ignore all the shrimp, and unfortunately, the ramshorn snails aswell. I find it a little ironic that Joe saved my favourite shrimp for last. I guess it's a case of murphy's law kicking in.

So now after seeing this blatant act of murder, the mystery is solved and I will remember to NOT keep bettas with red shrimp.

  8. Thats ok, wanting to definately keep color in my tanks so was going to get me a few boys of each and find homes for the rest. Not interested in breeding them right now.

Well any hopes of breeding them are out. When they get bigger you'll be able to tell the males apart but peacock females pretty much all look alike, a drab brown fish. So you won't be able to separate the females with much accuracy.
  9. That would be awesome to see..very educational! Aww who am I kidding I think it would be neat to watch the whole play up to mating, like to see what kind of interaction they have when first meeting occurs. Good luck!

LOL I agree, that's why I referred to it as "nasty".

I would much prefer getting a new bloodline to work with . This was so fascinating though, I had to try. I will get pics next time so I can share with other "voyeurs" of fauna interactions:)

    -roll- TOO FUNNY!

  10. Ok, so the dilema is this, bought a bunch of awesome babies from a member of AA. Of corse I got them home and put them all in the same 20gl tank. How can I..if possible at all.. tell the difference between eurekas and sunshines at 1/2" ? Any way of doing it??

I am thinking I may have to hurry up and wait unless there is a trick to it (other than keeping them seperate) LOL :boom:

  11. Hello! And welcome to AA. I had the same problem with my Betta's and now moved them into a 10gl, way happier! I just went to Big al's and bought the little package incl lights and lid..20 bucks i think. They have little mini filters and under gravel heater, keeps it nice and warm in there.

Anyways, nice to have you join the group!

Hi everyone. I signed up around yesterday. I'm from Calgary and I currently have a ten-gallon community tank and a one-gallon betta bowl with a betta named Prince in it (I plan to move him to a more suitable container, possibly the ten-gallon). Is there anyone else from Calgary here?

    fishprincess

  12. Thats right, start with small size change increments, they wont notice..

Well welcome to AA, I hope to hear from you lots!

So i do my good share of research. And right now i own two tanks, a 2.5g, and a 33g, the 33g is under the jurisdiction of my dad, so basically, only the 2.5g is mine, and an empty 10(w/ filter, heater) in the closet, my dad won't let me set that up though =(.

It all started many many years ago, when i was a wittle teeny tiny kid, say 10-12 years ago, when my dad bought home a large tank.

I was around fish for most my childhood. Then we moved and had a hiatus for 4 years.

Last February, my mom bought a betta for my sister, at first we kept it in a bowl, then i commandeered it, and put it in a 2 gal hex.

However as a result of few water changes, it didn't last long.

I did more and more research as we went on, i snuck home a 10 gal one day, boy did i get in a lot's of trouble for that.

My dad let me keep it up, and the stock on that tank wasn't quite the best =/.

Fast forward a few months we got a 33, spent awhile cycling it, and it went barebottom, and unplanted, with a giant tacky castle in the middle to my horror.

That tnak is a pure fish tank only, and i don't enjoy it @$$ much as my 2.5.

My 2.5 was set up in early august, after realizing my 2gal hex wouldn't make a good planted tank, and was too scratched up, and parents wouldn't let me set up the 10. I got it planted, etc, it's due for a tear down in a few days, i may set it back up, but if i get my hands on a 5g, i'm swapping hte 2.5 with it, and hope that my parents won't notice LOL. ( a few inches each way, not too noticable? lol )

I'm into planted aquariums, mainly low tech because i'm rather busy with studying up, and other things.(midterm's coming up .... =[ )

So about myself, i'm 15 years old, and i'm in high school.

As my name depicts, i'm vietnamese, and this is the screen name i use for practically everything due to convenience over the years.

    I procrastinate, alot.

And i got quite hte strict parents.

and my name is Kevin Nguyen.

my mobility is quite restricted, parents, bus, etc >.<

    So i'm sorry about that.

  13. Howdy, lol, I know little late, but better late than never!

    Welcome to AA

(standing up in front of his peers) Hi my name is Dean and I'am a freshwater fishaholic (the peers stand up and reply, Hi Dean. then seat themselves)

It all started about 2 1/2 years ago when my wife brought home a tiny Beta tank frome the neighbours which didn't want it anymore, I rolled my eyes and laughed at her.

About a week later she brought home a Beta to put in the tank. Ok kind of cool.

A couple of weeks after that I decided to toss 3 white clouds in there too. Oops over stocked.

I guess I better get a 20 gal so I bought one stocked it.

I was walking by a dumpster and low and behold there was another complete 20 gal just sitting there so I brought it home.

Christmas 2005 came I decided to get a 29 gal.

By now all the neighbours know about my newly formed addiction and one of them gave me another 20gal.

Soon after my sister gave me a 15 gal.

And just recently I have aquired a 10 gal.

All complete systems, had to get a new heater hear some filters there ect.

There is a 130 gal that has caught my eye but my wife says I have to get rid of all of them first if I want the big one.

I just cant give them away help what should I do???

(Dean sits down bows his head in shame with his hands folded awaiting a responce from the support group)

    Welcome to AA!

  15. Hi,

My Name is Roger. I just restarted a tank after being 'out of aquariums' for about 10 years. Before that I had several different tanks and worked in a store for a while.

Anyhow I am back on the learning curve and un-learning some of my old bad habits and ideas. I look forward to learning from all the posts and advice.

    Thanks,

Well, Welcome back to the best addiction going! Glad you could join us in AA

  16. Hello all!! I'm pretty new to the hobby - got a fighting fish at a grad ceremony, ended up at wal-mart for a tiny Betta tank and then soon had a 21g tank with guppies and tetras and some cory's. haha. Only took me a week and now I'm hooked. Already trying to talk the girlfriend into a 75g cichlid tank!!

LMAO know the feeling, started with a 50 and now we have broke the 100Gal point, 7 tanks later and only a few months...:)

  17. Hello Everyone.

Though I'm not new to AA, I am back after a much needed long vacation.

I'm working on a few projects, one involves trying to grow up a happy and active Tetraodon mbu  and the other is building 3- 16'L x4'W x2'H tanks out of wood and glass that will stacked ontop of each other in my fish room. So some of you may see me a lot in the DIY section, with pics, questions and soliciting opinions.

Also, for those that are interested or unaware, a new Big Als Aquarium Services is being built in Calgary as we speak. It's very big and is a SuperStore class. So anyone who still has big al award points from the other location will be able to use them in the new location. Lets hope the owners are fish people this time!

Also' Aquatic Imports is for sale and if it doesn't sell by Dec. 31 2007, the doors close forever, so everyone pool their money and lets buy it!

    :D

    Welcome Back!
