  1. It definitely could work. The principle is sound, so all it would take is proper mechanics.

Try looking up reviews on other forums like MFK where people who've used it will post positive and negative reviews.

I've read a few DIY denitrator designs that required alcohol to get it started, but not every week. I'm not sure why this system would require constant food for the bacteria. Maybe it's just too efficient?

    MKF stands for?

    Thanks

  2. So Jason, are you saying that this filter might actually work as claimed?

I would think that it does. It is well known that such a filter at a very low flow rate (anaerobic bacteria ) and these bacteria are fed with alcohol on a regular basis does denitrate. And one does not have to do a water change for nitrates.

There is still the dissolved solids, and these will will build over time, and should be measured.

  3. The only thing I can think of is something in the tank is causing these high readings.

The substrate in the tank is several years old. It was a shrimp substrate I brought home from Singapore.

I'm wondering about your substrate. What kind of substrate is shrimp substrate?

Is it from your previous tank?

If so, maybe it was deteriorating in the lower strata... pouring it over to a new tank, is now exposed to water and dissolving.

    Just a guess.

Edit: Were you using a product like aquasoil?

I tend to agree. the substrate may be leeching stuff Why don't you remove a bit put it into RO water then check TDS every 4 hours or so

  4. Are these LEDs any good for plants or are they just bright?

    http://www.aquatrade...-12-p/56201.htm

6500K colour, but only .06W? This doesn't necessarily mean no good but I am leaning to just for lighting and not for growing. Anyone have any experience with them?

I know one can go sunblaster for cheap, but options are good right?

I did a lot of research recently and I found that for freshwater planted tanks LED's are supplemental only as the technology getting the right spectrum has not been perfected at 6500K

It requires coatings (likely phosphorus based) on the LED to make the spectrum and that is not easy. It looks like the minimum is a 3 watt LED and many of them, creating a heat problem that requires a fan.

I believe we are 3 - 5 years away from reliable LED for the planted tank.

  5. These are capable of overwhelming even the biggest tanks, Yours are fairly small and will take more time to outgrow the tank. They look great right now!

It would appear that they could use some fert tabs and pehaps more light if you wanted to get them bigger: but why?

If you leave things the way they are their growth will be reduced and will keep looking as good as they do.

  6. Hello,

I have my pigeon bloods spawn in a community tank and got some wigglers. The first 48 hours was fine then all gone after. I was thinking it was the other tetras that were hovering around the fries since day 1 of hatching. They spawned again today before moving the parents to a separate tank. I am thinking of raising the fries artificially. Can anybody give me tips on how to feed them? I don't want to do the egg yolk formula method. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I work in the day so food that will last up to 9 hours at a time would help.

    Thanks!

try www.simplydiscus.com There is a wealth of info on fry feeding.

  7. hey, maybe this is popular to do, im not too sure.

Just wondering if anyone has gotten cryptocoryne to attach to driftwood at all? have a small runner that I would like to try out if it works....

Crypts usually like a rich substrate. It may well survive but likely will not,

  8. the 150 has a high bio load as i usualy do 50 % water changes every two days or so sometimes more im hoping with all the discus getting close to adult i can start feeding less and cut down

Sure, higher water volume = longer for nitrAtes to get too high. And with adults less food will help a lot. More rings will not help (but wont hurt) with that unfortunately. Water change routine could be adjusted to -tested -NitrAte levels, with Discus you likely want to be below 20 if possible.

There is a possibility for bioballs (because of the smooth surface) to harbor nitrAte eating bacteria but only if Oxigen levels are really low; a dedicated filter with bio-balls and a very low flow rate might help but not for sure.

There are dinitification filters on the market that work with feeding the bacteria in the filter alcohol...have a look with google.

  9. Soim about to transfer from my 150 to my large tank about 480 gallons total rightnow i have 2 fx5 1 ehime and one sponge filter running on my 150 i have thesump all running on the new tank nothing in it yet just fresh water . Thefilters on the old tank are just filled to the brim with ceramic rings and suchnot sure what it would all work out to but i have an additional 100 # of ringsthat aren't cycled at this time is my filtration going to be covered if i justmix all the old media with the new would say it would work out to about 1 oldto 5 new kind ratio i know it will take some time for the new to getestablished but in the mean time will i still be covered as it was enough inthe small tank just different ways of delivery

If you keep the bio load the same you will be fine. If you add the additional rings you then increase your bio load slowly and it will balance again.

  10. Really nice thread, cool fish never really paid attention to them before.

+1. I'm going to have to take a little closer look in my LFS!

Unfortunately you may nor find the quality described here. The ones in LFS are mass produced and we will never know about the hybrids that occur -they are bred in ponds- so anything can happen.

There are some dedicated breeders right here in Alberta with quality stock thumbup.gif

  11. I need some plumbing advise.

I am plumbing a 180 gal. upstairs tank, down one floor to a 75 gal. sump in the basement. The horizontal distance will be around 17 feet and the height about 8 feet. The drain is 1.5 “ and the return 1”

I am thinking of a submersed mag drive 2400 pump.

    Questions:

1./ Would there be noise from the water – rushing in the pipe- on the way down, past the “durso”

2./ What type of flex product to buy. There are some challenging obstacles and corners.

3./ How is this flex pipe connected (Glue to a solid connector or hose clamps?)

4./ Preferably I would like to hire someone who knows what they are doing: any plumbers out there?

Thanks for your help in advance.

  12. As I was sitting and watching my tank I noticed that these guy are realy liking this one tuff of moss ! And as I took a closer look I could visually see 8 eggs . I think I might try and think of a way to make this tank a 70% moss so they don't all fight for one tuff .

    Here is a short video
