  1. I had an above ground ~150 gal. Tub that went from 16c to 34c in one day, more than once. I added a heater when it dropped to 14 one night, an set it to 18 c. I did cover 1/2 of the tub for shade with a sheet of foam insulation and covered 90 % at night.

The boesmani rainbow fish and s.american river cichlids survived. The rainbows spawned every day and I harvested a hundred fry.

  2. I'm currently using Excel in my tank now if I suddenly stop using Excel will it shock the plants and they will die?

I want it too be CO2 free, I'm currently using 5 ml a week sometimes 10ml that's if I remember too put some in and my vallisneria spiralis are melting and not growing.

just stop no worries. ...Excell is know to kill vallisneria.

As someone mentioned the photo period may need to be adjusted when you get too much algea growth

  3. Biodives "So far out of 9 plants tried, across 3 tanks, all 9 are growing and doing well."

Why mess with a good thing. Looks like you found a balance that works for you. Be carefull with the RO addition only. Usually if you want reduced PH...in Edmonton... mix 25% tap water with prime of course. Some bottom feeding plants like swords like the addition of root tab fertilizers every 4 months or so.

BTW most fish will be fine in edmonton water.......when breeding fish -for some species - may need lowering of hardness and or PH.

    "low ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels"

ammonia and nitrIte must be 0 at all times > biological filtration. nitrAtes are removed with water changes and most folks aim for 5- 40 ppm (plants do well at 5-15 ppm in most applications)

  4. My experience with discus has been that they are a difficult fish to keep. You have to be prepared for a minimum of twice weekly very large water changes,..... forever. I also found that I needed to keep multiple meds on hand as they are fragile, get stressed easily ....and get sick.

    Local water is fine.

They should not be kept with rainbowfish as these are too fast for the discus and they will go hungry, also the temp is too high for rainbows.

The best way to get nice ones is to spend the money...... get 5" or 6 inch adult fish, preferable from a specialist retailer, one for every 10 gallons of water max. C.Jerom(sp) in Calgary had some 7" fish recently for $150 that were fantastic. Never seen better.

Do lots of research and you can expect to pay 100-150 per fish.

  5. Absolutely for the fish we keep. Depending on the species more or less. In the wild they can go into the shade or deeper for sunlight and temperature.

Some, probably more then we know, live in complete darkness but you don't have them in your aquarium to often.

As jvision mentioned timers are best.

If they are spawning and producing life healthy offspring I do not think they are depressed,if they are capable of depression.....unhappy possibly, depressed?

  6. I have mine with rose lines, rainbows and loaches. They are quite comparable and very active. May spook the knife fish if it doesn't have enough cover. The Angels may also be unhappy with the activity at spawning times as they are very fast and the males displaying very boisterous.

I find that 7 is the minimum you would want.

  7. Your identification is correct....as to rainbows. also : Sahyadria denisonii rose line barb denisonii barb

There is a case for doing nothing but big water changes and some frozen and or life foods for a few weeks.

I would use a combo of Pima and Mela fix for a week. To heal fungus and help with body sores.

The lacustris might have Popeye and may need treatment for that separately.

Also I would sterilize the 140 gal. With h2o2 or bleach I preference peroxide as it leaves no residue. You can get 35 % at a hair store like Sally's about 6 bucks per litre.
