  1. Maybe or perhaps even likely, the food is complete in all way's. Having shown and bred dogs for over 20 years, I have my doubts about ALL prepared foods. Even though I used them and continue to use them.

If I do not supplement fresh greens, the plants WILL get eaten :boxed:

Feeding the vegetables 3 times a week certainly safes my plants.

  2. I know my rainbows, clown loaches and BN love zuchini (put a slice in the microwave for 25 sec, thanweight it down)

Also crushed blanched peas and shredded cooked spinach.

I always prepare lots, freeze, then thaw before feeding.

how do you feed veggies to cichlids? and what kind and how often? If I feed them good quaility flake/pellets, do I need to suppliment them with fresh/frozen veggies? I always wondered if fish enjoy variety in their diet. I have yellow labs, rusties, pecocks, dolphins, buffaloheads, clown loaches, a pleco and a BN.
  3. I would squeeze-out, the filter material from your small tank into the big tanks filter, it will add millions of bacteria immediately.

The filter(s) will cycle in time.

Adding another NON-cycled filter will not help.

While the gravel holds bacteria, too much rotting material (if there is any)would add to the ammonia load, so try for a balance here.

One other idea is to not feed for a few day's. As long as there is ammonia present the filter is building up bacteria.

We do have a measurable amount of nitrates as well.

The filter is cycling but not finished.

We were told not to touch the gravel by every pet store person in Lethbridge so we didn't. We have a small tank that is cycled but I think that the levels are too high for the amount of filter material that I have available from that small tank. We were also thinking about adding a bigger filter.

Tomorrow when my husband is home we'll vacuum the gravel to see if that helps.

    I have 2 questions

1./ How old are the test kits, and

2./ Is there a measurable amount of Nitrates?

Some more thoughts. Good to have thoughts, but no expert here.

I would vacuuum the gravel really well, there may be too much food rotting in there, adding to the ammonia load.

While there are some good bacteria in the gravel, the bulk of the work is done in the filter media. What kind of biological media are you using and are you perhaps cleaning the filter material under tap water? If so, better to leave it alone till it is cycled.

The filter should eventually cycle, the high nitrite can last some weeks.

Can you get some media from a cycled tank to squeeze into yours?

Prime will give false readings of ammonia, and will render it non toxic. It is of course required if the water contains chlorine

I had good succes using stability daily.

I have no experience with the ammonia aborb material, is it perhaps interfering with the natural cycle?

    1/Is this all you need?

2/I guess one needs to buy co2 cartridges as well? And how many per year?

3/They talk about 180 bubbles per minute is this enough for a 1.8 w/gal, 90 gallon tank?

4/ What will happen to my PH

Thank you for your reply ...I am totally in the dark about this, but would like better plant growth without adding more wattage.

If you are interested in a smaller option. I use a Red Sea, Reactor 500, it is super small and works great for aquariums up to 125 Gallon. It's more expensive than the passive units but check it out.

  7. I don't mind the snails, they help with cleaning up and with algea. When I think there are too many I hand pick 30 or so and it is ok again for a few months. :shifty:

You can crush some in the tank and the guppies will love them as a snack.

I have 3 clown loaches in my 90 for over a year and there are still plenty of snails, they eat a few but I guess I feed them (the loaches )to well.

    Hey all,

I have a bit of a snail problem in my 21g community tank. Right now the tank has 7 guppies, 6 cardinals and 4 cory cats in it so I was thinking of moving the corys to a 20g I have and putting a couple/three Yo Yo's in to clean up the snails. Just wondering if anyone had issues with these guys snacking on fish or terrorizing the tank. The internet seams pretty positive on them but there are some horror stories.

Originally wanted zebra loaches but arent any in edmonton that I can find.

  8. Just did the same thing to a 20 gal worked just fine. I wiped the corner frequently with a dry towel, for a few minutes, applied silicone and 24 hrs later all was ok

Just lower the water 3 to 4" make sure the corner is dry give it 24 hours. Then put some silicone on your finger and work it into the leaky corner. wait another 24 to 48 hours and top up the tank. all should be good then with out all the hassle and work.
