  1. I just wanted to let you all know that my husband and I are moving out of province and have decided, after a great deal of soul searching, that we will not be able to continue in the aquarium hobby . We began our journey about 5 years ago with my husband starting a 23 gallon tank for african clawed frogs and me starting a 75 gallon with ropefish.

I would just like to say that although I haven't been on the site for a while, it has been great getting to know a lot of you. I particularly remember the "meetings" in parking lots where fish and aquatic plants changed hands. I also remember the time I was the delivery person for a Spencer Jack order where the plane did not get in until around midnight and I was meeting people to give them their fish at 1 and 2 a.m.

I hope that you all take care of your fish, yourselves and each other and I will hopefully be able to "lurk" here occasionally, if only to vicariously enjoy the fish-keeping hobby through all of you.

To quote the title from one of Douglas Adams' books - So Long and Thanks for All the Fish!

  2. After reading the posts here I went on Aquabid and bought some really healthy young Corydoras barbatus from TNT Aquatica. He also showed me some of his plants and they are gorgeous.

While talking to him he mentioned he might be able to bring fish, etc. in from Asia and suggested I send him a "wish list" and he would see what he could do.

The best part - he is here in Edmonton, has a website www.tntaquatica.com, and is a member of the forum (homerjs777)!!

If anyone else has a wish list of Asian fish (catfish, loaches, barbs, etc.) send me a PM and let's see what we can come up with.

  3. Is the 6 incher the one he got at the auction after the caoac show?

I know the apple snails eat plants, do the japanese trap door snails munch on plants

No, he's in a different tank. This one is a natural color (so kind of greenish). Japanese trap doors don't eat plants but need lots of algae to survive and thrive.

  4. I have 3 bristlenose plecos, 3 parotocinclus, and 3 giant otocinclus in the tank and don't have any scratching. I got acrylic because it was lighter.

FYI my tank measures 8' x 3' x 2', is plywood with an acrylic front and I used pond liner as my interior. In total it cost me about $950 in September, 2008.

  5. I purchased a sheet of ¾” clear acrylic cut to the dimensions of 90”x23” and paid $360.00. The company is called Plastics Plus and will give you a quote if you are interested.

I have been careful with my acrylic and haven't had any scratches - yet anyway. If you would like pictures just check out my plywood tank build under the members journals.

    Good luck.

  6. I have two Ctenapoma acutirostre (Leopard bush fish) that I got from Spencer. Any fry that will fit in their mouth are gone within a day or so of being added to the tank. These fish are amazing because of how wide their mouths can open and the way they hunt. They look extremely lazy and sort of "float" around the tank - until the fish or invertebrate is within grasp - and then watch out!

    Hope this helps.

  7. I have some fussy eaters and have brought in a number of wild caught species and have found that they have moved over to NLS pellets and wafers faster than any other food I have tried.

As well, my husband has an axolotl (aquatic salamander) who refuses to eat anything except NLS wafers.

I like the fact that the food does not break up on contact with water, that there are different sizes for different sizes of fish, and that I don't have to feed as much for everyone in the tank to get food (a lot of my fish live on the bottom - hence the name bottomdweller_fan :)).

I also appreciate all of the sharing on this topic as it gives new (and not so new) fish-keepers valuable information in order to make an informed decision (whatever that decision may be) about what to feed their fish.

    Thank you.

  8. As for group orders I can understand being concerned; however, any good fish shipper will send you pictures of their actual stock when asked so you can see what their stock is like.

You can also google them or check forums (e.g. MonsterFishkeepers) to see what kind of experiences the people on the forum have had with the supplier. If you are thinking Spencer Jack, I can personally say that his fish are amazing. I have only lost 1 fish out of the dozens he has sent me.

    Hope this helps.

  9. Congrats.

I just had my second batch hatch. You may want to put the male in with the eggs. My male spent his time caring for eggs and did not eat the fry even after they hatched. You will need to make sure there is enough algae for the fry or they won't survive.

    Good luck!

While doing my reg W/C I come accross what looks like farlowella eggs (8) on the bottom edge of a piece of driftwood. I removed that portion of the wood (was attacked while doing it) and placed it in a breeder in a seperate tank with an air stone. Just wondering how long they take to hatch, I have no idea how long they were in the tank but the eggs are still clear. The only other tankmates are 16 P. pulcher red face fry 2 days free swimming and a tiny longfin bn pleco.
