  1. just m2c, having different mixes of tangs in my 72 I have found that similar fish don't get along. For example i had white calvus and goldhead comps and they really hated each other just fought for space. Also two kinds of lamps are not a good idea either so tret's or sexifasciatus and dafodils, just asking for trouble. I have found that getting different shapes and fish that chill at different depths is the best idea. For Example if I had to do it over I would do four calvus (only one male thought) 1 sexifasciatus about 10 cyprachromis 4-6 julies 6 synodontis multipunctatus, and a couple plecos. I prefer the multi's to petricoli because they grow a little slower and are harder to find.
  2. Currently I have 2 of these little guys about 4-5" in my 72G with all my other fish. I am wondering about moving them on and getting a larger group of them (juvies). I had these since about 1.5" and it seems like they are cramped for space now. Wondering what all you think. Maybe someone has some young ones they would like to trade for two nice mature ones?
  3. But an albino mixed with a regular albino mix will have some ragular and some albino. If it follows basic Mendallion genetic theory, the fish has to have received an albino gene from each of it's parents in order to have the albino coloration. As far as I know albino is always recessive to regular color, so albino carries double recessive genes. A regular color genetically could be carrying 2 genes (one from each parent) for the normal color, or 1 gene for normal and 1 for albino (again 1 from each parent). In this last case, with carrying 1 recessive albino gene and mated with an albino, there is a 1 in 4 chance of producing an albino from what looks like a regular crossed with an albino. yes "basic Mendallion theory" indeed! LOL. I have know idea what that is all about, me nun 2 edumacated. Anyway I think I get what you are saying. Basicly if you want a perticular type you want to have two parents of that type. ie 2 long fin albino make long fin albino fry. Thanks a bunch to all of you for your info especially the really smart sounding stuff.
  4. So does that mean that two albino's wont produce albino's? If so how do you get albino's?
  5. Cool thanks for the info, what about hybrids. Breading longfins and normal. Would I get longfins or not or maybe both?
  6. So I have two albino bristlenose longfin males. I would like to find some females and see what happens. My question is what happens if you try and breed longfins with conventional ones. Also any tips for getting pleco's to breed. Not trying to make this a business or anything just want to see what I can produce. Thanks for your imput. J
  7. There are some breeders on this forum that have goldheads and calvus. Black seem a little harder to find. The males have a taller top fin than the females and will be bigger. I have had many types of alto's and they are great fish. I find them a little boring to watch compared to others though. They also seem to be a little fragile at a young age, just m2c.
  8. I have been very happy with all the AD Konnings books I have gotten. He only does african chiclids though, to my knowlage. If you get them try online, the stores here charge an arm and a leg.
  9. My uncle has a little rock business he runs as a side job. Specializes in ponds and such. Everything from huge to small. If you would like his info shoot me a pm and I'll send it to ya!
  10. Great advise all thanks much! The tank will be cared for by mom and dad at least for a while. There daughter is about 6 months old now, she just seems to love fish any time they see them anywhere. Qattera thanks for the offfer just might work once we find a tank and stuff. What would you suggest to do with the fry? I mean how long will they stay with the parents raising them? I really appreciate all the help and offers. This site ROCKS!!!
  11. Hahaha thats great. My favorite is the "false frontosa" I bought for 6 bucks. It was about 5" long and was a N. Tretecafalus. Sorry I cant spell. Anyway good for you enjoy your fish.
  12. This may sound ignorant but have you tried Google images. I was amazed how many pics it comes up with when given scientific names. Havn't tried this one though.
  13. I have a friend that has never kept fish before. They have a young daughter that has taken a liking to them. They are thinking of getting a tank and keeping some fish. They live in a apt. so space and moveability are an issue. I am thinking something 35G or less for a tank. They are starting completly from scratch so cost will also be as factor. My question for all of you is what would you recomend. I only have experience with africans so I can only help a little. Not great with scientific names but can search. Please post up any suggestions, pics or even equiptment or fish you may have avalible. I hope that this is in the appropreate section and I am not asking for too much. Thanks in advance!!!
  14. We got a river too! I have seen lots taking the dog out around the dawson and gretzky bridges. Great walking trails just look around sure you will find something. Also little bogs and swamps on peoples land are great. just ask first. Most people don't care. Drive around some of the farms around the east end of the city lots of low lying land.
  15. Thanks all mine look exactly like that. Wish I had a female cause judging by that spot he's REALLY is in the mood!
