  1. And peas make a good fishy laxative, if they will eat them. I pop the skin off and cut the pea up into small pieces about the same size as the pellet food they are use too. Worked on a danio that refused to go hehe. I am no expert but it might be worth a try can't hurt anyway but wont help with swelling or injury. T
  2. Bought some electric yellows at the auction. When I got the bag home I realized one is missing her left pectoral fin. Totally gone, no open wound or anything noticeable like that just gone. Everybody is in a quarantine tank happily swimming about but is there anything special I can do for her? Will it grow back in time? She seems to be a little sulky and swims lopsided when she swims at all but nobody seems intent on picking on her too badly. Such a nice mild cichlid, so far, they are my first yellows hehe. Thanks! T
  3. I am sorry guys I know this has probably been answered somewhere in the boards, probably a million times but I just can't poke through any more threads. . . My tank is 24 inches deep and 36 long and I am in desperate need for lighting. I'd just go buy the coral life ones and be done with it but I killed the budget for the week on the xp3 filter, upgrading sucks. Anyway it's a planted tank (and the plants don't like being without the light) CO2 will be in next week (DIY) I do have some high light plants but not many (that may change) and the only fish right now are some danios and rainbows. Anybody have suggestions about using hardware store lights? They need to be able to sit on top of the tank, the tank does have a glass top. I would like the light to have some sort of "shade" so not to blind me as its my end table by where I sit on the sofa hehe. . . The fish tank is better then the TV. But beggars can't be choosers I'll take any ideas. . . . Thanks everybody!
  4. I just added another layer of floss to the filter, I did rinse the fluorite but not until the water ran clear, so I will see what it looks like tomorrow. Although I have decided it looks very barren and I need more plants. On a tragic note while taking the plants out of my 10 gallon to put in the 65 I squashed one of my danio fry with a log and had to put him down. I don't think I have felt so bad in a long while, actually I still feel rather crumby about it. . .
  5. I do but they are still on the camera (and I take terrible pics I thought it was the camera so I got a better camera. . . it's not the camera hehe) The water is still really cloudy thanks to the fluorite and my constant fussing but the filter is going gang busters. I will post some pics in the photography section as soon as I get all the plants in and the water clear. . .
  6. Well I am glad I am not alone with wet T-Shirt problem, and as for multiple tanks this is number 4. To think it all started because I wanted to relive childhood and grow triops and seamonkeys. I still grow brine shrimp but now they are food not pets, the circle of life can be cruel. . . back off to watch my water warm up, hope I can get my plants in today, the ones I got at the auction had to live in a bucket because I ran out of room and they aren't very happy about that arrangement. Stay dry everybody! (I know I wont)
  7. I finally got my new bigger tank! (early christmas gifts rock!!!). Due to the fact I bought the wrong stand 6 months ago I got to get a 65 gallon instead of a 55. Its so big I need a step ladder to work on it though but thats ok the fish will be very happy in it. . . all 3 rainbows. The best part of this is I have room for more fish! I have no idea what I'm going to do. . . I want EVERYTHING, thankfully I have some self control, though not much. No point really to the post I just had to share the great news with people who would understand. I may be asking for stocking ideas soon though hehe. Take care everybody!
  8. Just a thought and I am nooooooo expert, but i do have a growing family of Australian Rainbows of two different subspecies. The males can be really brutal on each other if they start to fight. Have you noticed any fighting?
  9. *sigh* I was afraid of that I am not sure I can cull the fish. If they were suffering I could do it but they seem happy as danios go but I might be able to find somebody to do the deed for me. They just go in a container in the freezer right? Keep in mind you are talking to somebody who as a kid buried all the goldfish in the garden with elaborate ceremony. I do know that I have very little interest in more danios they were a starter fish to put in nicely and I would like the 10 gallon tank for shellies, that being said i don't want to be adding anymore of these spastic fish, but will keep the healthy adults until the end I have had them for 3 years and got them as full grown adults, how long can they possible go for hehe. Thanks!
  10. Well I think I have it figured out, think being the key word. He is certainly a rainbow, I am thinking splendid. His fins have very dark edges and almost tiger like stripes while the rest of the body remains fairly pale. He now dwarfs my largest danios and they don't even think about bugging him. I have totally redone the 10 gallon tank, I am delving seriously into the whole planted tank idea getting ready for that 55 gallon. If hes a rainbow he is going to need some room to grow and some friends and the danios wont stop breeding so room in the 10 gallon is becoming an issue. Speaking of the danios some of the fry have kinked spines could this be because they are inbreeding? It seems to only happen with certain batches. Is there anything I could do so it doesn't happen again or to help them? Mindyou they all act normally it just looks like i put a few of them through the dishwasher! Thanks everybody!
  11. Um that's the mystery I only Have danios! Well and shrimp and one common pleco. I assume whatever it is came in as an egg off a plant but the store in question says there were never any fish in the tank and I do rinse and inspect all my plants before putting them in any tank regardless of where they come from (just say no to yucky snails). Thanks again!
  12. Ok it's me with the danio fry again hehe, so my other fry were growing at an alarming rate so i moved the biggest ones out of the shrimp tank into a 10 gallon grow out tank with my other "danio" fry. They look nothing alike. Now remember these are my first fry I assumed my lil fry just need more time to grow before he got his stripes, and I'll admit he was awefully small I never got out the magnifying glass to look closely at his fins. Now that I see the fry side by side it is very obvious the differences. I'm going to try to get a pic up, but I am having trouble trying to get him to sit still and he is still only about 2cm after two months but he is on nls fry food now. However I will describe him the best I can and see if anybody maybe has an eureka moment. His eyes are larger then the danio fry, he has both a dorsal and an adipose fin but the former is VERY small and his anal fin is very long running almost the entire length of his body. He doesn't have much color, his back is still almost see through and he prefers the top part of the tank and has generally the same body shape as the danio. The danio fry like to pick on him so I would like to find out what he is so i can make sure he has the right tank parameters mind you he has made it this far. Anyway I don't really expect anybody to know for sure, my description being what it is but if somebody has had a tankful of fry that look like this, let me know. At this point your guess is better then mine, but if I was to hazard a guess I'd say some sort of rainbow fish. WOW, that was really long winded, well thanks again folks! Oh and if I can't figure out this mystery, how long does it usually take for a fish to reach adulthood? I'm sure what it is will be obvious even for me then.
  13. Hi again! Just wanted to post a little update, the little fry made it to the danio tank change and is doing really well in the breeding net. I have 7 more fry found in a bucket a few days after a water change in my shrimp tank the shrimp don't seem to mind and are still breeding hehe. I'll be moving them before they get too big to make snacks out of the baby shrimp. The best news is nobody is left in that little plastic critter container. Thanks everybody for your advice, my first experience in fry has been very positive thanks to you and this wonderful forum. I even got the stand yesterday for my bigger tank, going to need it just for all my new danios hehe. Thanks again
  14. Hello, Ok I think I have a heater that is on the outs, its not very old, 2 years max, but it doesn't seem to be shutting off. It is in my shrimp tank set at 24 but at but the water temp got up to 32 and it was still on, I got home just in time, everybody survived. My first question is can I try anything to fix it? My other question is if not what are other peoples opinions of the best heaters out there. I don't want to say what kind of heater I have because I might just have got a bad one and I don't want to effect anybodies opinions on what I should do or buy. I do know I don't want to risk my tanks and they all have the same brand of heaters in them right now. Thanks so much, hopefully I posted this in the right place!
  15. Wow, that was a great link I can't believe I missed it, Thank you. It did put my mind at ease. I will still use the hikari crab cuisine for the cherry shrimp but now I have no fear of feeding the fry in my shrimp tank the nls fry food. I have to say everybody is eating nls now and I love it, I just wish I had tried it sooner. After a week my danios have never looked better and my water didn't go murky like some report. Again, all thanks to AA thanks again guys!
