  1. What species have you guys found in Alberta that worked? That did not work? I found some Hornwort in a lake in the Lethbridge area, and another type of plant that I have yet to identify. I am trying a piece of the hornwort in my 30 gallon but I am nervous about the other plants.

How did you disinfect your locally-collected plants before placing them in the tank, if at all? I was told to use a bleach dip but I am nervous about it.

What creepies do you guys know of in Alberta that would be harmful to our aquarium fish, if any? Do you think the fish would simply eat any hitchhiking crawlies? Should I be concerned about that?

  2. My new Dalmatian female dropped this morning.... I managed to get 9 out of the community tank into the fry tank where the Platys are. The week old Platys are the same size as the newborn Mollies! I know there are a few other Molly fry still in the community tank but I have to go to work now (running late as it is) so I will search again when I get home tonight. I saw 2 more, there are probably alot more than that even, but they were hiding way down in the plants and rocks and it's difficult to get at the without them shooting across the tank straight into an adult's mouth, LOL.

I have my new Betta in there, too, and apparently that's not going to be a problem because there were at least 10 babies who made it into the hiding places. :D

I am sooo happy! They are all brown but different shades so some will be lighter colored, I am sure. No idea who Daddy is because the Mommy just came home yesterday. She must have been happy with her new environment to drop her fry right away like that. I figured she would drop next week.

    They are SOOO awesome! :D

    *hugs them all*

  3. Make sure you scrape off the old sealer with a sharp blade, clean it up, vacuum it out (it gets messy), and definitely use tape to line the corners and edging where you want to reseal, because it can be hard to keep straight if you don't tape it all. Use aquarium-safe silicone, something that does NOT have "mildew resistant" properties. I got my aquarium-safe silicone at Home Hardware for pretty cheap, it says "safe for aquariums" right on the tube. ;)

  4. Hey all :)

I have what is listed in my signature... I am considering getting a Betta, I really like them, but I want to know can I add him to the tanks I currently have? I add some aquarium salt (not alot) to all 3 tanks, and I heard from an unreliable source that bettas can't live in brackish conditions. Is this true?

Also, I have sailfin Mollies, will the Betta attack their fins?

If I can't have a Betta in any of my tanks, I will still consider getting a 5 gallon setup for one someday, just thought I'd ask about this now, in case. :)

    Thanks in advance!

  5. LOL, I keep telling myself I will get over the novelty after a few batches have come and gone but I just can't believe this would EVER get old. I actually called my Grandma and my sister-in-law and told them, they were almost as excited as I am.

This morning I saw at least two, so I know at least that many survived the night. I am hoping more than the 4 I first spotted are in there somewhere, hiding.

    Thanks everyone! :)

  6. My orange Mickey Mouse Platy Mommy had her babies this afternoon. Funny, I read something about turning up the heater for breeding tanks to encourage Mommy to drop, and today I turned it up, she probably had them about 2 hours later.

I only had a few minutes to look before I had to come to work (I was a little late, honestly, I was too darn excited and I don't even care about work right now, lol) but we counted at least 4. Mickey Mouse Mommy was NOT huge, she is very young, this is most likely her first drop, so I didn't expect massive swarms of fry or anything. I am 90% sure I even know who the Daddy is because I only have 1 male Platy and I have had this pair for almost 2 months with no fry before this.

They are SOOO tiny! All you see at first, hidden in the plants at the top of the tank, is little tiny black eyes; you look closer, cross your eyes trying to see through the jumble of leaves, and you can see a pinkish-colored body, a teensy pointy tail. I took the lid off and counted them because they were at the surface. Four, possibly more than that, I have ALOT of hiding places in that 10 gallon. I fed them right away, I will feed again tonight. I plan on feeding about 4-6 times a day, because w/c are no problem for me at all.

These are my first babies who actually have a chance at surviving. I took Mommy out and put her in the 20gallon community tank where there are only 3 other fish, all Mollies. I called home just now to see how she is doing and my fiance told me she is acting totally normal and none of the other fish even seem to notice her, so that's good.

I am sooo excited! I hope at least one will survive to adulthood!
