  1. I had my first batch of Strwberries a couple of weeks ago. All babies are doing great and growing like weeds, my question is this. There is a major colour variance between allot of the fish. From a nice orange to a drab brown/grey. Would this be male female? If not what?

    Thanks Mark

From my experience with strawberries I've never been able to sex them at a couple of weeks old. So I doubt that the color differences have anything to do with male/female. I've also never seen stawberry fry that are brown/grey but when you breed hybrids you often get fry that end up looking nothing like their parents. I have tons of OB peacock fry, 90% look like OB's the other 10% are a plain grey with some faint stripes.

  2. Well put Harold. Sorry about that, 129 is alot of fry. I have heard of people also using an extra compartment on the bottom and leaving it empty, and the fry will be in one of the top sections. This prevents the fish from being able to just suck them out. I personally wait until the female is past the yolk sac stage and strip them at about 15 days, or put her in a separate tank and leave her until she spits.

I've now got an extra compartment on the bottom for the remaining fry. I've tried to remove this female and let her spit the fry a couple of times but for some reason she doesn't ever hold longer then about a week.

  3. Well my Ob Peacocks were at it again and yesterday I stripped my female only to get 129 partially developed fry (WOW). I was super pumped. I took the little guys and transfered them to the tumbler. With so many fry I needed to use two trays. Long story short, this morning I woke up to find my small pleco sucking the fry out of the tumbler from the bottom. Only 4 left in the bottom tray, and unfortunately most were in that tray. The little sucker got about 80 of them during the night. I never thought a pleco would do that. Anyways, lesson learned. I thought I should share this story so someone doesn't run into the same situation.

  4. I'm wondering if anyone has ever caught many crayfish in Alberta, or knows of good places/ways to catch them in the southern half of the province. I'm thinking about using them as food for my rays, but have never had much luck in the way of catching them. I know they're around here (had one in a tank for years when I was younger), but all the times I've set out a trap I haven't come up with anything. Any bait ideas for them?

    Thanks.

Lake Newell near Brooks has lots of crayfish. The NE corner of the lake seems to be the best place to catch them. Just put out a minnow trap with any kind of meat in it. They are however illegal to possess and transport alive.

  5. Actually F1 or more correctly G1 means 1st generation from wild caught and F2 or G2 means 2nd generation from wild caught. From the 3rd generation from wild caught and beyond the reference is normally to tank raised or domestic.

If a wild caught is bred with an F1 the offspring will be F2 and an F1 with an F2 the resulting fry are domestic or tank raised. Hence the interest with serious breeders to keep within the wild caught to F2 generations so the lines can be traced. The genetics are still strong in this range and generally tend to weaken as you get further away from it.

Thanks very much for the clarification!

  6. Well does anyone know where i can get a deal on nice rocks for around my pond and water fall? I don't want just river rock, but i don't want to pay $6000 for rocks...LOL any idea.

I'm in the process of tearing apart some raised flower beds that were built up with some nice rocks. You are welcome to them if you're interested.

Send me a PM if you would like.

  7. Hi I'm new to the forum and this great hobby. Have been keeping an assorted cichlid tank for about 4 months now and have loved every minute of it. My two boys 5yrs and 3yrs are addicted aswell.

We've even had our OB peacocks have about 20 fry. Pretty exciting for a beginner.

Thanks for all the good info I've gotten here already!
