  1. I have one Coral Life T-5 unit with a double bulb for one tank, my other tanks have standard fixtures with single T-8 bulbs. I need a strip for another four foot tank and am thinking of Coral-life again for a cichlid tank. Been pretty happy with it.

Have any of you tried Coral-Life and regretted it or gone back to the standard, say All-glass deluxe strip or similar?

Can anyone explain the pros and cons of T-5 vs T-8 lighting?

T5 Lighting is higher effiiciency as well as greater light output. Same as the differance was between T12 lighting and T8. Smaller diameter tubes with greater efficiency and better light output.

I don't believe the T5 would add any value if you have no plant in the tank.

  2. Well the Fourth silicone job didn't work so just before i desided to gut it and start again i took and use the last llittle bit of the last tube of silicone i had on hand and GOBBED it in the corners without tapeing

    IT WORKED

    THE TANK IS SEALED

    YAAAAYYYYYY

    It only took FIVE MONTHS

Oooooo my fish are gonna be HAAPPPY.

    I'l post pics asap

I would be scared to have a tank like that in my house......did you not clean the glass in between silicone jobs? If you clean it well enough, and build the tank properly it'll never leak.

I would be scared too as silicone is not suppose to stick to silicone, not well anyway. That is why you go through the exercise of removing all old silicone.

  3. I got some shrimps last year (Nov'ish).

I can see the female carrying but have yet to see any baby shrimp.

I am assuming that the baby may be too small to see/find as the tank is heavily planted.

Just wondering how long do I have to wait before I can see millions of baby. What is people's experience.

10G, planted. 10 shrimps, snails, no fish.

  4. i have some small grass like plants that i am trying to hold down. so i put the grass in between two layers of aluminum mesh for screen doors. i was wondering if this is safe? i have read that stainless steel mesh is ok but i just wasn't sure about aluminum. i know that aluminum does not rust.

    Thanks

Don't. Aluminum can cause Alzheimer in fish

It should be fairly safe according to the material data safety sheet - http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-Aluminum_oxide-9922858

    Aluminum does rust/oxide. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_does_aluminum_not_rust

  5. If you feel like trying something else, bamboo works like a charm. I use it with my asian biotope and my loaches love it. Just weigh it down with rocks until it becomes waterlogged, then it will stay submerged on its own.

I bought mine at some craft store as a long pole, then sawed and sanded it down to get rid of any bad bacteria etc. Since bamboo is common in all tropical regions of the world, it should work with any tropical biotope and it looks excellent!

    Good luck, whatever you choose,

    Taylor

    Taylor,

    I love your idea.

Does any one know where I can purchase bamboo in Calgary?

  6. Found that getting the tape on straight to be the hardest part.

The vertical side isn't too bad. It is the bottom that is hard as you need to reach in and try to do it without seeing it from the side. Next time I would skip taping the bottom, as no one would ever see the silicone on the bottom of the tank (I don't run bare bottom tank)

  7. Hey everyone, was needing some advice on my 60 gallon. I know most will say it is over kill but I had the filter there so might as well uses it right? :smokey:

    I have a FX5 and a Rena Filstar XP4.

I wanted the FX5 to be purely bio and the XP4 to be mechanical. I was thinking for the FX5 to take out all the trays and use the pot scrubbers like Jvision did. Would that be wise? Or should I leave the bottom tray in and use a polishing pad?

For the XP4 I was thinking of Carbon on bottom tray, then the 30ppm pad, then 20ppm pad and then on top tray use the micro filtration. Any ideas or suggestions?

If you setup both for bio filtration, you won't need to worry about killing off the bacteria culture when you clean one of the filter.

  8. Add a powerhead. I've found that one of the best places to set it is on one of the sides at the back, blowing across the tank (toward the opposite end). It should create a nice current going around your tank.

Where would you put the powerhead. Top, middle, bottom of the tank?

  9. I had to replace my kitchen faucet last night. I was able to attach the python (with the adapter) to this faucet by removing the washer and screwing on the white adapter and then the python housing. The adapter I have will not work on this new faucet. Before I start to panic that I have 5 large tanks to change water on (including two discus tanks) without a python, can anyone tell me if the python will only work on certain types of faucets? Will it work on a bathroom faucet?? Are there other adapters I can get?? Where would be the best place to go for this type of equipment?? My plumber will kill me if I ask him to take out this faucet and replace it with one the adapter works on. Help!!

I have no problem with my bathroom faucet. It is a run of the mill single handle faucet.

  10. Thermal dynamics...heat rises.

Sean is shaking his head at you and ranting loudly!

Because heat doesn't just rise, but transfers through conduction as well? :>

Michael, this is a great clip. I don’t run a restaurant but I want one!

I was fascinated so took a bit of a look into the machine - it turns out that the lower half of the oil is cooled separately by a cooling pipe so that the water doesn’t boil!

  11. Ok, once and for all, about the japanese translations. I’m Japanese, and obviously also fluent in english. I grew up speaking both languages and have worked as a interpreter/translator. Seanacey’s comments about the dialogue are correct.

1.There is absolutely no mention in the dialogue of a new synthetic oil. According to the dialogue, the water not boiling is due to the structure of the device.

    2. According to the dialogue, the water drops below the level of the oil before it gets a chance to heat up and explode.

    3. The ice demonstrates that there’s less splash when frying stuff coming from the freezer that maybe hasn’t thawed completely.

    4. The fish are for demonstration purposes only.

    Read comments above by KO-g.

The video is about a safer deep fryer. Not about an aquarium under the deep fryer.

  12. Not only normal, PITA. I put canola oil in mine Saturday. There will be a minuscule amount get to the tank (125g) and canola oil is not likely to harm anything.

    Vic

If there is enough oil escape into the tank, it may cover the water surfaces and stop oxygen exchange. I would check it daily just in case.
