  1. Update: So about 2 weeks ago I got rid of the tank. I already have two tanks set up and don't have the room. I'm also planning on getting a bigger tank in the next few months. I sold it at a yard sale and I feel good about it going for $20 to a kids for a lizard tank. Better going to good use rather than collect dust in the basement.
  2. MDF board would be a bad idea. I've looked into this several months ago and you should really use plywood and not the partical board nor chip wood boards. With the moisture and the possible spills and leaks would weaken the board. Not something I would want to mess with. Even if you paint the board or water seal the board I'd still go with real plywood.
  3. Ahem, how do you know this? That's odd since some scorching days I'm sure the hose gets really hot, especially the black ones. For them to split when hot water is ran through them seems odd to me.
  4. I think the reasoning is that if the hose is left outside things might get into the hose that could hurt your tank, (namely bad bacteria, debris and bugs.) I think if you run hot water through the hose first you should be okay.
  5. Okay so after letting this sit for a few months I'm considering trying to patch the broken part up with another piece of glass. So what can I use for glass? Would glass from a picture frame work? I could probably get that pretty cheap and already cut to the size I'd need. What about the trim? The bottom trim is cracked. So should I swap the good top trim and the cracked bottom trim so that the crack is not the top? Is the trim even required? I don't mind spending time on this since I am getting to learn something out of it. But I'm not willing to take a chance that a pane will shatter when it's in the living room and my toddler is sitting near it.
  6. How much did the sheet cost if you don't mind me asking? I've been wanting to build an 90G acrylic tank but hte cost of the acrylic was almost twice the cost of buying the glass tank.
  7. :bang1: :chair: :bang1: Due to the possibility of being laughed at, I'm not saying where I got some fish from. I'll just say it starts with a W.
  8. The fish seem better. No more casulaties since that night. I baught some clout and hope this doesn't happen again. Too bad, that was one of my better looking fish.
  9. I am feeding them some Wardley Goldfish Flakes (mainly for the danios) and a few Nutrafin basix floating Cichlid pellets. When I got the 2 Kenyi two months ago I had little issue and the Kenyi were eating fine. I then go 3 Electric Yellows a few weeks later. They didn't seem to eat as well and usually only at the flakes, (I assumed this was because the Kenyi was more aggressive so they didn't want to expose them selves as much). I did notice them spitting the food but I figured this was normal behavior since I had many fresh water fish do the same thing to break down the food. The first to die was a Kenyi, this one was always hiding and figured that this was due to the other kenyi being the more dominate one. Didn't think much of it since all the other fish seemed quite healthy. So I then found my other seeming healthy Kenyi getting fatter and figured that she wqas being a piggy. I found her dead later on. The Yellow that died didn't have as noticable bloated belly but was hiding more during the final days. The Fish are about 1.5 - 2" in length and are juvies. After the first Kenyi died I add some salt to help lower the stress levels of the tank, (just in case.) That was over a week ago. I checked the parametres then and all seemed well except the KH and GH was really high. I did a 20% water change then also.
  10. Unfortunatly I can't leave the house tonight and have to get up for work tommorrow so I can't treat the tank until after work tommorrow. I also don't have a spare tank and might have to treat the tank as a whole. These are my first cichlids so please let me know if I'm doing anything obviously wrong.
  11. I've added aqaurium salt that I had available. I have two spong filters in there that was cleaned with the water change. I'm in Calgary and the tank is a 25G tall tank. I'm really hoping I won't have any more deaths.
  12. I came home today after work to see my Blue Kenyi with a fat tummy and dead on the bottom. Since had to drive my wife to work I could deal with it then so I removed the fish and drove my wife to work. When I got home I found one of my Yellows was now very inactive and died minutes later. What to do?!? All stores are closed and I've done a 25% water change. Doing research as we speak... any help would be appreciated.
  13. :bang1: :bang1: :bang1: :bang1: :bang1: It seems I'm getting a lot of other confirmation that this is likely a Kenyi. So the question is what should I do with her? I'm thinking taking her back to Walmart might be the best option but I don't think I still have the receipt, (it was over a month ago so I think my wife might have chucked it.) I'm warry of keeping her since I only have her in a 25G. I'm planning on getting a bigger tank in the next few months and wish to stick with the Yellows since I love the colour. I might keep her until she gets too aggressive and then give her away... maybe trade her in some place and meanwhile get something more tame. Maybe some rusties or some Julies. More research
  14. Here's another image. * Removed uploaded image and posted into original post. *
  15. I got a Cobalt Blue a little over a month ago from Walmart comparing with what I've seen all the Cobalt Blues I've seen online do not have vertical stripes. Is this in fact a Cobalt Blue or did I get hosed? Let's try that again... sorry for the flooding.
