I have a 20 tall, planted. i have corydoras and apistos and rams that hang at the bottom 1/2. guppies take over the top 1/2. looks nice. i love the apistos and rams from fairdeal. beauties!! in the 3 of my tanks with rams in them, the rams all stay near the bottom, they aren't good for filling up 'upper' space. you're right, they'd much prefer a long!! robin

i just got the "No more tanks!!!" from the 'boss'. I have 3 for me set up, and am in the process of helping 2 of my girls create a tank for their room. I vaguely remember the 'no more tank' discussion 2 tanks ago......oopsie. tee hee. I think i'd better cool it...this last tank setup was free, so i thought it didn't count. another oopsie. robin

Hi there. We have a 30 gal setup that my daughters want to make into a 1/2 water (fish) and 1/2 rock/planted for newts. I have seen these nice looking setups in fish stores, but online have read that the temp requirements and disease/species issues are a concern. Anyone done this? Were the fish/newts healthy? What temp? The gals want a ropefish for the water and 2 newts or so up top. As long as the newts were too big for the ropefish to eat...would this work? Any tips on ropefish or temp requirements? They wanted an eel, but they get so awful big. If not newts/fish....then newts/frogs? Looking for the good/bad and ugly for responses. Thnx

I've heard many people do it this way.......i am sure someone with personal exp. will post soon. I do know of one case where the faucet water came through the hose into the tank and was pointed directly at the intake for the canister filter and didn't have time to mix with the water conditioner before hitting the filter. In that case, all the bio stuff in the filter was killed off apparently. So....I guess, just make sure the hose puts water somewhere other than directly into the filter intake!! Robin

I also do have 2 planted tanks, doing just lovely. This tank I want to be open, plain, simple. I am just brainstorming........but not wanting another planted. Something different......

Hi all, looking for some tips. I have a nicely done up 45 gal in my living room. It has always been a community tank, but I can't grow plants well in it, and am tired of trying. I am thinking of moving the community fish out of it and setting it up as a 'clean' looking tank for one single larger fish, and maybe a bottom dweller as well. There is a wc pleco in there and a upside down catfish that might stay. Anyways, suggestions please on a suitable fish that would do well by itself, not grow too big for the tank (I have a canister and hob filter currently, so filtration is awesome), and is not an oscar. they are ugly! so.......suggestions?? I have a lovely matching wooden canopy on the tank (well, did...) and it just seems such a shame not to use it, but I really love the output of this light! I will have to measure and mull this over and see if it will fit under the canopy on 1" of lego stilts. We'll see. I'll let you know what I end up with....and maybe a pic!

hmmmm, not getting out of bed to measure....It is a really tall tank, i think the depth is 24"as well as the length. the width is 12". i love the light coming from this little unit, i agree it is a nice one. i might just store the canopy and use the proper legs, or maybe diy and fit it under the lid. not sure... Dalray? you out there? how many gallons is this tank you sold me with the demasoni in it????

I noticed yours for sale!! The ones you connected??? I have a 24". The little yellow note in question does say not to use a canopy....BUT.....many people i have talked to, including the fellow at the fish store said that as long as the canopy is well vented, there wouldn't be a prob. My issue is the length of the legs makes this lamp waaaaay to high to fit in the canopy......what is the minimum distance safe from the glass top?

This may seem to be a really stupid question......but yes, I do know how to sex a guppy. With that in mind.....why are 95% of my fry female? I leave my mommy girls in a 10 gal (a handfull of them) and throw in a few boys from my 'show' male tank for a little while. After a week or a month, whenever I get to it, I take the boys out, put them back in my male tank and let the ladies carry on with babies. There is a lot of live plants and hiding room, so the strong/smart fry live. As they reach age where I can tell the sex, I take the boys out and put them in the boy tank, etc. Where are all the boys? My girl tank is getting really full of girl fry......yet only one or two boys come out for the other tank???? Why? What am I missing?

aha.....now we are talking! that's a good idea!!! could i also just jimmy up my own spacers and sit it on the glass with 1/2 inch or so between glass and fixture? I could steal a peice or two of my son's lego.....tee hee

is there an easy way to shorten the legs, or build new legs.....or is it okay to lay the lamp right on the glass top, under the canopy?????

Hello, a question. My old light fixture pooped out on a used tank i got a year ago. I proceeded to Big Al's and bought a new 'aquaticlife' fixture for my tank. I love the light! It is so bright and lovely, and my plants I am sure will perk up a bit. The legs this lamp stands on makes it so high that I can not put the canopy overtop. I don't HAVE to use the canopy, but I kinda like to, it is nice. There is a lot of ventilation at the back of the canopy....soooooo.......Can I somehow, safely, shorten the legs so the light is very close to the tank but not touching? Is this dangerous? Is there an easy way to do this? Tips and cautions/go aheads please.... thnx Robin
