  1. The ACE bowl show isn't really a show, atleast not like the big fish show we have every few years.

Its being held at the November meeting. People bring some fish and display them in bowls for the duration of the meeting. Then the members vote on which they like best and prizes are given out.

I haven't heard anything about a Betta show.

I'm a member of Betta Breeders Canada and we are talking about a show next year. So far, the talk has been for montreal. The International Betta Congress show is in Texas next June. Am hoping that I can go as it would be amazing!!!

  2. another thing you can feed the Ram fry is frozen rotifiers for about a 4-6 days after the egg sac has been eaten, then after that the Ram fry mouths will be big enough to eat freshly hatched BBS

Rams are not fans of hard water especially when they're fry. Perhaps check your water and see. Also ram fry like a little salt and very clean water too. I'm trying to get my GBRs going but it hasn't been easy!!! Good luck to you and let us know how it goes!!

Are you getting your info from local breeders, or just off the internet? I've never heard that ram fry like salt. I have bred and raised many fish that "don't like hard water" in Edmonton tap water without much problems. At worst I've had to cut it with some RO (some Apistos, Blue Rams and close-to-wild angels).

Actually I got the information from the breeder of my GBRs who's located in Edmonton. I'm not sure what he does to ensure good spawns from his rams but I know he does something with the water. I haven't had any success with mine in Calgary but really haven't been prepared. I do breed angels with Calgary water with no problems though.

  3. This is a beauty I picked up a couple months ago!! I have since had him spawn and produce alot babies soon to be for sale in the new year!!

    Hey,

it's your betta buddy from the Edmonton show. He's so gorgeous!!!! Are you going to the Edmonton auction? I have fish to trade if you're interested including some wilds. Let me know!! Your dt female that you gave me is really looking well. Am still trying to figure out if I have a good boy for her!!

  5. Maybe. For someone not looking for 'extreme' growth, would 100% flourite base be overkill?

Pick a substrate that you like as it is very hard and messy to change it out later. You might find a few months down the road that you want to add those better lights and a CO2 source to get those plants really growing. I believe the "plant type" substrates hold the plant's roots in the "ground" better than normal aquarium gravel.

If you are planning on having a fish tank with a few plants, then normal gravel will work just fine.

I have several planted tanks and am a big fan of laterite mixed with regular gravel. When I set up the tank, I give it a couple days to let the dust "settle". My plants seem to do well and have swords, crypts, hygrophilia, limnophiia and many others. I'm not a technical person and don't use Co2, fancy lighting and remember to fertilise once a year if I need to.

I think the laterite gravel mix and healthy fish help my plants grow!!!

  6. I don't know why some people call those ones balloon rams and others call them angel rams. But yeah I did see them there.

Fishclubgirl, do you breed GBR's? If you have pictures of the parents that would be great to see, I was planning on investing in some GBR's soon :)

Sorry for the delay. Once I figure out water conditions, I hope to get the GBRs going. They seem to spawn weekly but don't like calgary water. I'm very close on a technique that works though!!

  7. Come to think of it I have hardly seen any GBR's around here lately.

Agreed! The only LFS that has had any was Gold's, but they were the "angel" variety, which I don't want. Maybe soon they'll have some of the regular kind.

Still looking for some females to see if I can get a pair. Hopefully I'll be able to score some soon. : )

I have some young ones for sale in Calgary!! Please let me know if you're interested.

  8. Hi,

Don't know if this will work for blue rams but it worked for my angelfish. I would take out the plant leaf with the eggs and put it in a tank with just a sponge filter. Weighting down the leaf and having the sponge filter aimed at the eggs would help prevent fungus. After they had absorbed their egg sac, I fed brine shrimp. I managed to get several spawns out of my pair this way and my mortality rate was low. Good luck and hope this helps!!!

  9. Hi guys,

I'm in Calgary and I have some betta ocellata for sale, pick up only. My fish have been here for a month and are doing really well. Let me know if you're interested!!

    AM

Does nayone know how much it would cost to order Mouthbrooders from Asia or the US? I don't think it likely that I will find any femal Betta pi or B. pugnax here in Edmonton. Does nayone even know if any Betta sellers carry either of these species?

  10. Yes, I am. I still have the DT but lost the male I wanted to use for her. I got in a bunch of HMs and will be trying to get things going with them. Am hoping that we can do some fish trades sometime. I like CTs and PKs but have had problems getting breeding stock. Am up to 40 bettas plus some wilds and my spawn. A girl can never have too many bettas!!

    Hi,

Was that the male from the Edmonton show? If so, please let me know as I wanted to keep in touch. If not, I'll just say that I have 2 week old PK fry and it's my first spawn. I'm handing out cigars!!!

Are the lady who took home one of my females from the show the Double tail? Congrats on you frist spawn!!!! It's very exciting!!

lol Yeah I tried to spawn him but he doesn't know what to do yet, can't figure it out... he tried though maybe next time...So not any yet from that guy from the show...

the other two spawns are doing quite well.. I had free swimming fry this morning and the other batch should be free swimming tomorrow or earlier Tuesday..

I have alot and they are all eating, this batch will be mostly red coppers... the other batch should be a mix of white's and blues or both dunno yet!! The White is PK batch ... the reds are long fin/halfmoons so not sure what I will end up with!! Will be interesting though.
