  1. She's a perlmutt, and not very big (maybe 2-3 inches?). I would estimate she's been holding for about a week and a half now...maybe a bit longer. Also, the four little guys are doing good - I'm feeding them crushed up Veggie Flakes. They are CUTE!!!
  2. Thanks for the help, everyone! I did end up removing some rocks, and managed to rescue three cute little fry. HOWEVER, here's my next question...it looks like another one of my females is holding! Her throat is distended - that's what it looks like, right? Is it a bad idea to move a holding female into the fry tank? I'd like to keep as many of them as possible. Will she eat the three little guys I already have in there? Thanks again for the help.
  3. Hi everyone, So, a few weeks ago, I thought one of my cichlid females looked a bit weird, but I didn't think anything of it. Then, yesterday, I was watching them...and I notice a few little fry guys poking around near the bottom! I'm thrilled, and I've got a 5 gal fry tank set-up. BUT (and this is a big "but") I have no idea how to catch them! I've been trying to use a net, siphon them, everything - but nothing seems to work. They dart back into the rocks, which I'm afraid to take out (since the big guys would just eat them without their rock cover, and that would be oh-so traumatic). So, any ideas? I would just leave them in, but if they got eaten, I don't know if I could get to bed at night! Any help at all would be much appreciated.
  4. Sorry for the double post! Anyways, we're in the Buy/Sell forum...the list has been cut off! Thanks for looking
  5. Hi everyone, So, the time has finally come (or rather, it came a long time ago, and I'm just getting around to dealing with it now). The little, itty-bitty cichlid babies that I've raised are now officially too big to all occupy the same tank, so some of them are going to have to go. If anyone needs some cichlids, these guys are probably about 2-3 inches now. I have Yellow Tail Aceis, Perlmutts, Red Zebras and Eureka Peacocks to give away. PM me if you'd like some of them. I would post pictures, but I am lacking a digital camera - if I can borrow one, I'll post it on this thread soon. My tank is located on the University of Alberta campus, so if anyone wants to pick them up, just let me know and we can arrange a time for meeting and transfer of fish.
  6. Hi guys - I was wondering if I could get advice on something. I've got a male betta and a black phantom tetra (they get along fine) in a 5 gal lightly planted tank. Fairly recently, my betta has taken a liking to lying on his side all day long. He just kind of flops over and lies down on his side (more than once I've panicked when I've come home, thinking that he's dead). His breathing is normal, and he surfaces when it's time to eat, but he never stays at the top for very long - just eats his food and sinks back to the bottom. Even though his health seems to be fine, I'm worried that this might be problem - anyone ever have a similar experience? And while I'm posting questions, my *other* betta has recently turned into a fighter - he won't stop attacking his reflection in the glass of his tank! Should I get him a background? Is it unhealthy for him to always be in "attack" mode? They're such a stark contrast! TIA for any advice you might have!
  7. Actually, we used two full bags of sand...so, 100lbs of substrate is in there It was...interesting to rinse...to say the least. And yeah, I think I'll pick up a background at some point in the next week. If only there were more hourse in a day.... :hey:
  8. I'm pulling these from memory, but IIRC... The rocks were from a landscaping place called Burnco Rock Products in the city...they were $0.19/lb (I bought 160lbs of rock!) The sand is Target brand Pool Filter Sand - we had to call around to find it, and I can't remember the name of the store that we ended up at - I will ask the lady-friend when she gets back into town (they call her "the better half" for good reason - if it wasn't for her, I'm sure that my tank would be bare-bottomed and full of dead fish). Thanks for the compliments, everyone!
  9. Hey gang! I *finally* got around to getting some pictures of the tank, and thought you might like to see it: Tank Close-up
  10. Sooo....anyone know where I can pick up some more Syno Petricolas? -ham-
  11. Darn - and they had some others at the auction, too...I'll have to check Big Al's to see if they've got any good-sized ones. BTW, the 403's working now! Thanks Rob and Darcy
  12. WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's awesome - works like a charm now! :smokey: Thanks Rob and Darcy!
  13. Hi all, I think I have a problem - I picked up a Fluval 403 at the auction, and I spent some money getting new tubes, and a new intake and outlet. HOWEVER, even though I'm pretty sure everything is set-up right, the filter doesn't seem to want to suck up water - the motor just spins and spins without sucking up anything? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks for the help!
  14. Wow - I need to post a picture soon! All my little guys are in there - they're just under an inch each (little ones!) and I have: 9 perlmutts 8 aceis 8 red zebras 8 fire fins 2 syno petricolas Once they grow out, I know I'll have to move a bunch of them...so keep that in mind, people with extra future tank space. :hey: I've got 100lbs of pool filter sand and 160lbs of limestone providing the aquascaping, along with some thoroughly unchewable plastic plants (I've seen what they do to silk ones!) Running an AquaClear 300 (and a would-be Fluval 403, if it wasn't for it being busted - gonna get a canister in there soon!) and an Ebo 250W. It looks grrrrrrrrrrrreat!!!
  15. Well, I was thinking that I'd need to put eggshell crate on the bottom of the tank, to distribute the weight of the rocks more evenly. Then I'd need to cover that up, as well as giving the little guys some room to dig without hitting the crate (since that would, understandably, stress them out). Am I overestimating the amount I'll need? :boom:
