  1. Thanks, in looking at pics of Fossochromis R. I think you are right. They said at golds that they turn purple when the mature. It seems like Fossochromis can do that as well. Looks like they will be the biggest fish in the tank!
  2. Hi Everyone, I had picked up three of these cichlids from Golds to add to my african tank. They looked like africans to me but were with some New World Cichlids. I was told they were africans or could go with africans so I picked them up. When looking through the species databases I cannot find anything that exactly resembles them. Anyone have any ideas? Sorry I am not the best aquarium photographer! thanks! Palmer
  3. Thanks for all the reply's everyone. Unfortunatly another female lith. started to look really bad as well (eye bulging really dark coloration and scales coming off body. Since all my other fish were looking well and only these two looked like they had an advanced disease/trauma I decided I had to euthenize them. HOSSTILE- I only feed my fish NLS. Tanker- You may be right about that I was wondering if it was a hole made by another fish initially as well Degrassi- It really looked to me like it was part of the fish not a parasite I'm hoping none of my other fish have this if it is a disease it may be do to a male beating up on them but just in case I have put a bit of salt in the tank after a large water change. thanks for the help! Palmer
  4. The rocks are not that sharp but it is in the tank with a male (Its female.) Thing is it just looks so unnatural it doesnt look like its been bitten more like a tube coming off its neck that happens to be ripped at the end.
  5. Hello, Two days ago I noticed a weird swelling that looked like the bottom of one side of a gill on my Oto. Lithobates. It also looked like there was a hole in it. When looking at it today it has actually become more of a tendril of flesh hanging below the mouth and it is pretty long and at the end it looks ripped. Here are some pictures the first two are when I first saw it the last three are today when it progressed. Anyone have a clue what the problem is? thanks, Palmer
  6. I havent seen the Albino's there I'll have to look again and check them out next time I go. The statue is poured concrete with coloring mixed in. They put a seal on it I believe at the place where they poured it. The name of the place I bought it at is Garden Concrete Products 3815 2nd Street N.E. Calgary AB T2E 3H8 (403) 207-1102 They have a wide selection of things to choose from and you can also pick from a few different colors.
  7. Thanks John! Here is a picture of the largest of the four Juvenile's. I am going to try and get some better pictures later of them all as they grow all of these shots are just from video I took.
  8. Male peacock is also showing some color
  9. The Copadichromis are a little bigger then the rest and the male is already showing some nice color. Nevchewy- Thanks! Tank is 125G I took some video/Pics when the room was dark so it is hard to see the stand and canopy. The substrate is Aragonite sand. So far so good I'm just glad to finally have some fish!
  10. Here is a picture of my new tank I setup I purchased all the fish at Golds and couldnt be any happier! I'll post some closeups of the fish later.
  11. Oh yeah forgot to mention I did seed it with a little bit of gravel that I hung in front of my filter intake. I havent really seen a spike of Nitrite just consistent readings of 0.5- 1 ppm. I guess if my Nitrates continue to rise and the Nitrite doesnt change I'll just do a large water change and get some fish. Thanks!
  12. For the first time I have been trying to do a fishless cycle on my 125 gallon tank and have a couple fo questions on how its going so far. I have been using household Ammonia and adding 4 mls per day. After two weeks I no longer read Ammonia levels above 0 ppm. Now its been another two weeks and I have not read Nitrite levels above 0.5-1 ppm but I am starting to get Nitrate levels between 20-40 ppm. I'm wondering why I never received a Nitrite "spike" ( I assumed I'd see something close to 5 ppm at one point. Also I have not seen yet the Nitrite levels go down to 0 ppm they seem to hold steady at 0.5-1ppm. Another point to mention is my tank is in my basement which is quite cool. Because of this I have been keeping the tank at 80 degrees F as to not burn out my heater. So I know it should take longer since usually temps of 86 degrees etc are preffered. Any feedback would be appreciated Palmer
  13. Has anyone seen these in Calgary? I can find the Visitherm deluxe heaters but I am interested in these black plastic ones since I have a black background on my tank. thanks Palmer
  14. Degrassi, It is only for show. I was originally wanting to do an all male tank but since I am adding them as juveniles figured I might not be successful at determining the sex of all of them. I am suprized that the article I posted is even on the Cichlid forum considering how most seem to be of the opinion of yourself and Rahim that multiple Peacocks even outside there "subgroup" have a high chance of breeding. So I am going to take Rahim's advice and just go with one and add more Haps.
  15. Thanks for the suggestions do you think a 125 G is big enough for three each of the Nimbochromis and the Dimidiochromis once they start to mature in size? I'm going to do a little more research about the mixing of the Peacocks and if I cant find anything else supporting it with the subtypes I'll just go with the one subtype. Copadichromis sounds like a good alternative I really just want a token Lab not really that many but we'll see!
