  1. Do you know what species of snails these are? One thing to keep in mind is some snails will eat plants. But there are alot that won't. Try even larger shrimp like ghost shrimp and whisker shrimp. I also hear amano shrimp are pretty good. I have had no luck keeping smaller shrimp species in with fish, even tetras. They always end up being snacks for the fish. What fish do you have in this tank? ya, i don't know what species they are or compatibility with a planted tank. I have held off on buying them because my 90 gal tank doesn't have much algae in it cause its a new setup. I do know that the ramshorn snails from big als destroyed my plants in the 20 gal... bought algae wafers so they would focus on those. big als staff said that if they had enough algae they shouldn't eat the plants. bought 6 ottos from sigh petsmart or fishstupid as it should be called.. so far 1 has died hopefully the other 5 will pull through. I don't know why but ottos do not to fare to well at big volume pet stores in terms of their health. Id say Ottos are my one of my favorit cleaner uppers because of their size, swimming action, and community playfullness but that they are not the hardiest fish...
  2. http://www.fish-club.org/index.php?nav=mt link to the fish club events for all non members topic sounds very interesting. looking forward to this
  3. there are some really cool pearl snails at Big Als right now. size of zebra snails but in pearl white, with white heads too.
  4. pea puffers work great however they are aggressive little buggers towards most tetras I have had them with. They will also hassle community catfish by pecking their back fin. So id only put them in with a semi aggressive community tank.
  5. big als endlers were all males. last time i was in there, last week, they had a sign posted up saying all endler's were spoken for. I have many female endler's and males. pm me if interested they say its best to have 2 females for evey male. I would agree.
  6. Extremely impressive. I have started building my own tank stand for my 90 gal. but don't have nearly the knowledge or the tools you have... Good job!
  7. Big Al's Edmonton has a few different types of Killis in right now. thought Id give the heads up.
  8. I think that "its definately worth its weight in gold" is the scientific and logical way of explaining it... I don't understand how this guy who has to read cheasy lines and forgets what he has said 1 minute ago can claim to have developed a magical box which can replace all water changes. He's too stupid to understand he's stupid.

    CO2

I have had very good success with my 30 gallon tank heavily planted without CO2 in a room that got a lot of natural light with only a single bulb ballast. Obviously those plants were undemanding in terms of substrate (they were planted in gravel) and no CO2... However I am now gearing up to start my 90 gallon tank which I want to plant heavily. There is no simple CO2 injection required yes/no tag on the plants at stores. I will be planting in Florite with a good 2 bulb ballast. I am wondering what plants thrive with a simple tank set up 2 bulb ballast, no CO2 injection? Java Fern, Moss, Lace... I currently have a 20 gal with ground cover clover in it. For some reason the clover is not doing well. Lights just replaced. Florite substrate. Suspecting the Clover may need more CO2?
  12. Crystal Red Shrimp I saw Crystal Red Shrimp at Big Al's Edmonton yesterday. Very nice little shrimp for 6$ each. I have a new favorite shrimp.
  13. Big Al's in Edmonton sometimes has Clown Killis, not in right now, but it does have some other killis.
  14. what do you use to keep the trumpet population in check? I have used pea puffers however they can be mean little buggers to my other fish so I would prefer another way keeping the trumpets in check, or eliminating the trumpets altogether.
  15. Everyone have favorite snails, shrimps, or bottom feeders that do the various clean up duties in their tanks? for my small tank I really like the cherry shrimp and otocinlcus. I have owned glass shrimp but they were unappreciated from the viewing perspective cause they were so dang hard to find. snails - golden & blue mystery snails are readily available so that is all I have been exposed to. Im sure there are some extermely vibrant patterned snail shells in some of your tanks.

    NEWB hello

thanks for the warm welcome. Tim
  17. way overcrowded... not my cup of tea, I would rater see schools of 1000s of little fish in a big tank then big fish in a relatively small tank.
  18. I bought a bunch of plants for my little sister's tank from www.Aquariumplants.com. I wasn't overly impressed with the root development of any of the plants we got. (plants were sold in bunches not potted, I suspect potted would be a better way to buy) The plants have taken quite well in the last month of being in the tank. Even with shipping costs the web was much cheaper than buying the plants at any store I know of in Edmonton. Any local recommendations?

    NEWB hello

Hi my name is Tim. I currently have; 20 gallon tank with just endler's in it. - still have to decide whether I want snails, cherry shrimp, small algae eater for clean up services. -30 gallon tank with lemon tetras, columbian tetra, pea puffers, large golden algae eater (sorry i don't know scientific names for some of my fish), and 2 albino buenes aires Tetras (on female one male), and 2 cories in it. - the plan is to dismantle this tank and give it away to a friend. -90 gallon tank - not set up - florite red - washed in buckets in garage, hood, lights, filter, heater purchased and collecting dust. tank stand - in the works the plan for this tank is to have a heavily planted community tank. - I don't know if I could possibly go chilid? (do chilids need sandy bottom?, I love the way chilids and think there is definately enough variation within the chilid realm to have a chilid only tank. After watching the optimal aquarium at ACE I am thinking of picking up a substrate heater as well. suggestions are welcome. Tim
