  1. How do you check that exactly? .. Ill look it up, thanks....but wouldnt the fry be gasping at the surface if this were the case?

I just added a bubbler. After some more research i found that do to the ammonia spike some of the fish affected may just be too far gone to recover, they also recently went through a bout of ich and treatment so thats a lot of stress especially for such tiny fish

hopefully the added oxygen will help

  2. Hey, I posted a few days ago about my ammonia levels being slightly high in my fry tank, ive corrected everything for a couple days now, but I am still having a few fry die off each day after spending a day or two at the bottom lookin weak, showing now interest in food etc, and then over time start to lose control and tople over until they finaly die. I have NO idea what this could be, any info or advice or clue would be appreaciated.

    thanks

  3. I am running an AC 70 and an AC 110 on my 75 gallon with over 100 fry growing them out...they are eating like little pigs now and producing a lot more waste. I recently added more biological ceramic rings to the already cycled rings in the filters, about half and half......mixing them together, and i have been losing fry since that time. I am not sure if i upset the bacteria so much and now they cant keep up? but im having ammonia problems and I am wondering if anyone has used the AC inserts that adsorb the ammonia and if they would reccomend them? ..my fear is that i will disrupt the balance even more due to starving the bacteria and never really getting ahead and building my bacteria numbers up, or will that even be an issue?

hopefully someone can help so I can stop losing fry

    thanks

  4. those aros were 350 I believe, but all sold. Golds has that big bottom tank with cichlids nothing that stood out in particular though, river front same thing, had a few very low qual FH's and otherwise nothing special, the new store is much more enjoyable though.......aside from the discus and the blue aros at golds which were awesome, and the fh's at Big als nothing i can think of. But im sure u can get a good female jag golds

  5. Just got back from a quick trip to Calgary and wanted to know if anyone knew anything about these Blue Aro's i have seen at Gold's...from what I can gather just browsing quickly they are a variant of black aros, just wondering if they maintain that blue on their finnage into adulthood or not though ? they are really nice!

also anyone looking for discus, you have to go to golds they are unreal!

Big al's calgary also has some nicely balanced big head red dragon flowerhorn, though a bit pricey, and a "not for sale" Fh thats huge and gorgeous , lacks the big head but otherwise an amazing fish , really red, and really mean!

  6. I did go back and see the fish again as i needed a filter part, and ide have to say his body shape is really nice and thick as mentioned by someone else. But again, the fading is just terrible. Its difficult to make a price judgement also because in comparison to what they have been selling at 200 perhaps he is worth more, but thats not to say he or any of them are fairly or rightfully priced.

I have seen one fish priced @ the $150 ish mark there that IMO was worth it. Perhaps a lot of it comes from inexperience and lack of flowerhorn specific knowledge, and these prices fly with customers for the exact same reason.

Anyways, i figured ide post some pics of a true masterpeice, and this isnt even at the TOP, but he has been raised by a fish keeper and not large scale breeder, so i found it more fitting to add here, you can see here, that the fish at the store would have a long way to come before it hits the 'amazing' mark.

    Enjoy!

  7. Apparently one day, someone saw a few Chinese characters on the side of the fish...(they may have been drunk or it might be just like seeing mother Theresa on the side of a taco) but that is also supposed to be a desired trait in a FH. kinda lucky??

Yea they call this trait a "flowerline" and before the flowerhorn bubble burst (they used to cost A LOT more than even now) if someone bred a fish that had flower line that had what looked like chinese character(s) in it, theyd have one hellovan expensive fish. Also the big hump on the head (kok) represents luck and/or wealth which is why its desirable

I wanted to take pics by my cam phone isnt good enough, hopefully we will get some up here!

  8. When i said infertile, i meant the male, and as in cannot produce offspring at all......shooting blanks so it wouldnt be 30 fry instead of i.e 200, it would be 0 fry instead of i.e 200. Usually the female's eggs are fine in regards to being fertile. It is possible that (as with any species) the male could just be 'less fertile' as well and produce low yields of fry though.

Yea you definetly need a lot of space, wish I could do that!

I did see the fish today, I was actually quite disapointed, and IMO that is a 150-200 fish max. He has fairly nice overall balance, his kok (hump) is there, but by no means is it big in the FH world, and the color he is showing from having faded is nice, but he hasnt completely (and may never) completely fade--a lot of black parts all over him, inconsistent fading/coloring is undesirable. There is a chance its just from stress marks like waht happens with blood parrots under stress, but i doubt it. What value he does have lays within his balance, fading and size, but i certainly would not call this even close to a master peice. I have seen better here in edmonton.

  9. Oh really....Hmm i will have to check him out this wknd thats kind of exciting FH's , especially of quality are a rare thing here.

REDO, as with any breeding you could get some high end babies or not, its all upto chance, and how many fry you can grow out to a big enough size to judge . Obviously your chances are much higher with a awesome father like that one than pretty much no chance with a low grade, but overall its a gamble. The other two major factors are 1) if he is fertile or not and 2) they have such a varied gene pool the variation amongst the babies could be huge in comparison to a 'purebred' fish where you have a much better idea of what you are going to get. If its a strong strain though the outcome should be tighter, but of course the female contributes as well. In general though, these high quality "master peices" arent the easiest to come by and its possible u may not get any from several batches.

    cant wait to see him!

  10. Business making profit, that's just criminal?

    LMAO!

I mean really, the nerve of them, and with all that free rent, free utilities, and

staff that work there for free.

$500 is certainly not a ridiculous price for a high end FH, Dennis at Golds told me that he turned down 2K for one of his display FH's. Not saying that the one at BA's is a show specimen, but in the grand scheme of things $500 is not exactly big money for some of the premium FH's out there.

Yea they can get very pricey, but when the price doesnt reflect the quality that's where the issue with this comes in. That is pretty funny about the "business making a profit " comment, but i dont think that he was suggesting that they shouldnt make enough to pay their bills, as well as a profit at all, just feels that they are consistently overpriced, and i agree. Of course I realize we all have the choice to purchase from them or not though.

  11. Hmm i may have to go check this fish out. The FH's ive seen there so far have been labeled with random strain names that dont exist and were way over price for their quality (or lack there of), i agree seems to be a reoccuring theme. Your best shot at a high quality FH is to import from asia, but im sure u wont get on that REDO...not for a "filthy hybrid" :P
