  1. I just got two 6 inch monos, who are currently in my 30 gallon quarentine tank adjusted to brackish water. Wondering if they could go in my tank 150 G. (brackish) with fish as small as 2 inches, some of them are mbunas and young dack dempseys, and young convicts and I have a small lobster as well. Will the monos eat my smaller fish? Will they pick on them? Or will my fish pick on the monos? I just know know much about mono temperaments.
  2. We have a large living room but it is a closed design, one door into the hallway and a bay window whose windows cannot open to the outside. We have had many plants in there for years and now i have added a 150 gallon fish tank. It is beginning to smell musty in that room. What can I do to keep the humidity down. I am concerned about mold in the carpets and walls. Any suggestions?
  3. Wow thanks, I wonder why I couldn't find it before. Thanks again
  4. This catfish came with a tank I purchased a while ago...it is about 8-9 inches long, has black dot marking behind the eye on both sides and has a red hue to the tail...but I don't think it is a red tail. Please...any suggestions would help.
  5. I just bought a new, used tank and it came with some VERY striking fish. Can you-al help me ID them please? I put together several photos of the same fish. I don't know if the yellow and orange ones are the same species (just different sexes or different ages?) And the big blue/black fish with the big lips. He is about 8-9 inches and I am told about 3-4 years old.
  6. Any one in Calgary or Red Deer willing to trade a female for my sub dominate male? pm me please
  7. Can any one help me. I was told I was buying a male and female saulosi. The male has shown wonderful dominant coloration. The female has been billant yellow for the past couple months that I have had them. But the last two weeks I have noticed that the female has been changing color. Now she is a lovely mauve with stripping on her. Maybe she is a male.... not a female after all? The first photos was taken about a month after I got her...I got both of these fish two months ago. The second photo was taken last week. See, it nearly looks like a male. The third photo was taken about three weeks ago. You can see some blue happening in the "female". The male is obvious. I only have the two saulosi in my 150 g. community tank...but it has about 25 other cichlids (including two male melanochromis interuptus) and gouramis of various sizes, mosly small to medium in size.
  8. I have dozens of photos of my "kids" but they were all taken before the era of digital cameras. If I find time I can scan some and post them
  9. I showed my two Dobermans to their championships and did competition obedience and flyball with one of them. I did agility (just for fun) with my great dane. That was amusing to say the least. Danes are not cut out for such things, but he tried... and in the end accomplished all the obstacles.
  10. Ok, I am happy with that...no betta at least not in that tank. Thanks for the input.
  11. My community tank is strictly a show tank, thought it might be nice to have a really nice betta in there. I currently have two large and peaceful parrots, five- 2 inch Jack dempseys (who will be moved once they are bigger and pose a threat), two red rainbowfish, a baby frontosa, eight pygmy cichlids (the types who never get bigger then 4 inches, a couple of commpressiceps, two small clown loaches, and five young servernums. The tank has two fluval 404, is that a problem for bettas? Current? intake?
  12. Thanks, C.nicaraguense.... is that the same as the "macaw cichlid"? I have been trying to Google it and can't find a whole lot of info./pics etc.... Glad the zebra cichlid was easy to id. Does mine have poor color compared to some?
  13. Hi, I have been in the fish world a relatively short time (a few months) and through my journey of buying tanks and fish from many, many different private sellers, I have this to say about "fish people"...they are just down right nice. I have been in the "dog world" showing champion dogs, I have been in the "horse world" managing a hunter/jumper stable and now I am submersed (pun intended) in the "fish world" and I must say...I thought horse people were pretty darn nice. But nothing tops the friendliness and hospitality have received from various fish owners. I have bought very few fish from stores and have aquired most of my collection from private homes. These people without excecption invite me into their homes to buy their tank or look at their fish (and buy them) and have been some of the nicest "strangers" I have ever met. Now when I chit chat with people about other people (not gossiping) and find out they own fish, I confidently say..."they must be nice people then". I have picked up fish tanks from three different homes and on two occassions had to take my 2.5 yr old and my 1.5 yr old with me. The sellers of the tanks invited my kids in to play with their kids while we talked fish and loaded tanks. One "fish person" even let us stay a little longer so my youngsters could stretch their legs some more on their outdoor play set before out one hour drive home. I bought some fish off another total stranger who made me tea while we chatted about fish. How nice is that! So I have nothing to say but great praise about you fish people. You have answered my question here with kindness and enthusiasm and I noticed after brousing the site, are generally hopitable to each other. There are a few post I noted that were snoty to say the least, but I am still determined to hold my belief that "fish people" or just plain nice people. Thanks to all who have answered my questions on the various forums. I look forward to posting more with you. I am still learning just all the in's and out's of this site (it features etc...)
  14. Here are some photos...I have two 150 gallon tanks.
  15. Is this a zebra obliquiden ? This fish is about 5-6 inches And the second fish...? I bought it off a really nice fella who couldn't remember it's name...he thought it was called a sunburst or starburst or something... He says it is till young...not full grown or showing full color...it is about 3-4 inches now.
  16. Thanks you'al, you were very helpful. I will try the bleaching and vinegar thing.
  17. Hi, I have just bought a new fish tank and it came with a bunch of stuff namely an orniment that, if I can get it clean, I might consider using in my new set up. But it is caked with much green algea, stained really good. I tried scraping it and it does very little to affect the discoloration. Any suggestions. Is there any hope I can return this orniment to a prestine white? And while I got you, what is the best way to clean plastic aquarium plants of brown algea... Thanks

    Sponge Filter

I have been reading a lot in the various forums about sponge filters. They seem to be used a lot for fry. Perhaps this is the answer to my having a rather small but valued fish getting stuck (and died) in the filter intake? Please enlighten little me who lives in a small town and doesn't get out much
  19. Then this guy must be angry all the time...he is almost always dark black. He does go kind of pale on the face if he is scared or being harrassed too much by the other fish. I have had him nearly two months now, and he doesn't do a whole lot. He just hovers in one corner. He does eat when it is feeding time. But he always looks depressed.
  20. I bought a group of fish from a fellow and he said this was a Jack Dempsey. I haven't seen any other JD that looks like this...what do you guys/gals have to say about him...or her...I really don't know.
  21. I am glad you think she looks ok. In the first photo I posted you can see she is whiter and brighter in her orange color. The next two photos were taken today...the orange is duller and the white looks ...well...not so bright. She has never been a ravenous eater. She eats...but she takes her time doing so. the best part is that she has formed a pair bond with my texes cichlid...the two are in love
  22. Hi, thanks for your imput. When I tested the water last week all the levels were perfect. But I checked them again just now so I could report acurately and the Nitrites were a little high. So I added extra Prime to deal with that. Funny the nitrites would be so high because I just did a 40% water change only yesterday.. However... here are the photos to show what I mean about her color going from bright white to dirty grey.
  23. I picked up a pair of those three weeks ago at Gold's Aquarium. I like them too. I have a young green and three small tourqoise as well.
