  1. Does anyone know how he does this? Most of the time I see this with airstones but what would make something look like smoke? do they have fine airstones? Thanks! Rob.
  2. I did Sea Jay good call on the sand..I really like the fact you can pick your grain size, cant do that at a landscaping company! I think the Sil sand looks great, the one I picked up was 20 bucks for 100 lbs and it is pretty white but also has some cool transparent grains as well..cool effect I think. Thanks again!
  3. Cool Thanks Sea Jay...How white is the sandblasting sand? Oh and what size of grain do you get Sil 1 (fine) Sil 4 (medium) or Sil 7 (coarse)
  4. Ok, ever since all you fine people have told me I could use sand for my FW aquarium I have been on the look out for some nice cheap sand...I decided I really liked the white sand but didn't want to pay 25 bucks for 20 lbs that you see it for in local pet stores... SO I started looking into pool filter sand..and yes the do sell white pool filter sand...but where to buy it in Edmonton remains a mystery as I visited a dozen places with no luck...then I called a bunch of landscaping companies and found some "Hawaii White Sand"...now it is not as sharp white as the stuff for 25 bucks but it is way more white then normal play sand and the best part is was 10 bucks for 100 lbs... I will see if I can get some pics of it when I put it into the tank. I am not sure about the forum rules about posting a company name so if you want to know where I got it just PM me!
  5. Don't trumpet snails replicate like crazy??
  6. Nice that explains it!! Thanks for your help!
  7. I apologize if this is super obvious but I read that when the power goes out some filters could siphon out your tank? Since I have not purchased a big tank yet and also a filter system I just want to know what to look for in that case? Do power heads do that or are they talking canisters?
  8. Nice!! Thanks everyone for your input..I had no idea you could use play sand and sand blasting sand! I just read somewhere yesterday that some people use pool filter sand..not too sure where in Edmonton to find that but I bet it is more then play sand. Thanks Again
  9. not too sure yet, right now I have neon tetra's, black skirt tetra's and some fancy guppies and a cory cat and a dwarf frog.
  10. yeah tough one, you are going to have to figure out how your stand is put together and see if you can duplicate it..but it shouldn't be too bad. But the hard part is what to do with the tank, it seems super tempting to move it but even at 1/4 full the water weight in a 90 gallon alone is over 180 lbs and not to mention your sand and other stuff oh and your tank weight.. if you can slid it onto a temp stand and everything is even and sturdy, then cool or else you have to drain it... Tough one...sorry cant be more help, it is tough call that only you can make.
  11. Can you use sand in a fresh water setup? I really like the look of the sand that salt tanks have and want to replicate it. Thoughts? Rob.
  12. awww the pictures really help, I dont think all is lost for your stand, if it were me and cost is an issue...which for most of us it is..I would just replace the bottom board, your side boards are not bowed out at all which shows that only your bottom board took in all the water. Because your bottom board is expanded now you have to be very careful with that tank sitting on it because once partical board gets like that all its strength is diminished greatly. It looks like it is a maple color in the pictures and you will be able to make your own replacement piece cheap and easy as most places carry that finish (HD, Rona, Totem). If you have a little more money to spend I would look into getting something like plywood that matches the stand, it will be stronger and hold up to water way better. Just some thoughts Rob.
  13. Aww Thanks for the input, I just found a good deal on a fluval 404 it should work fine for a 72 gallon right?

    Hello

OK I am going to show my newbieness...lol what is MTS?
  16. I am planning on buying a new 72 or 80 bow front aquarium fresh water and I wanted to know what is the main reason why people go with canisters over a power filter setup? It looks like price is a difference and canisters do bigger tanks but for a 80 do I need it?
  17. I had a friend try to move a 3/4 full 30 gallon once and it ended up cracking the bottom..I know it is alot more work but you have to drain to be safe....and I agree once partical board has been wet it is compromised and I would worry what could happen later at 3 am!
  18. What you saying Ikea partical board cant handle the weight? LOL
