  1. Is it tough and not slimy? If so it is Cladophora. Pretty easy to get rid of, water changes and more circulation usually cures it

Yeah it's like hair under water. I haven't even tried picking it off yet. Already done some water changes. I'll remove the fake plants and get it off.

  2. BWs in a SW tank are a lot like snails in a FW tank - they eat the leftovers. If the population is exploding, it means there's too much food in there. I've gotten rid of BWs by dipping the LR in FW for a few seconds - the worms come running out as fast as they can!

    +1

You can also try 6 line wrasse. I have two that gobble bristles like crazy

  3. Use a razorblade to take the paint off (very, very easy), and use Krylon fusion paint.. If you want blue they have blue. You have a nice project going on there, but if it were me.... that background would drive me insane the way it looks. Might as well spend the 30 minutes it would take to strip that paint and do it right before the tank is set up and in its final place.

Is that electrical conduit your using instead of PVC? If so, its not food grade, and will not work long run in an aquarium.

I would also turn that ball valve on your overflow away from the tank for ease of access.

Nice start to a nice project! Keep on truckin... but remember... patience is key. Take it slow.

  4. Good actinics are the only way to get good glow out of any corals. You can also try good blue LED's to make colors pop. Any corals with neon tips will glow nicely. I have an awesome glow with frog spawn, hammer coral, torch coral, candy canes, and bright colored zoas/zoos. Pretty much anything with a neon glow in your LFS will be good under the right light.

  5. So i'm building a 5.5 Gallon Pico Reef system from the ground up, and I'm now at the canopy/lighting stage.

I'm looking for higher powered actinic screw in bulbs, no longer than 6". Anyone know where I can get true actinic bulbs? I have 2 10,000K day bulbs already, and thus far, can only find the coralife 50/50 bulbs, which don't give me the actinic glow that I was looking for.

Anyone seen some actinic screw ins around Calgary?

    Thanks

    Mike

  6. Hey! I have lots of saltwater in my house, and I only use RO water. I always have perfect perams. Your discus will appreciate the RO water!

    I recommend this company. www.purelyh2o.com

The shipping was awesome, fast, and the customer service was really good.

I bought my system from them, they are extremely cheap, and they have a tonne of different accessories to get along with the RO\DI systems. I purchsed the 4 stage RO system with the dual DI unit add on, the TDS meter add on, the auto shutoff/float kit, and the pressure guage kit. I hooked all of mine up to a large food grade rubbermaid with a heater, airstone, powerhead, and a submersable pump connected to 50 ft of hose in there for storage of the water.

I also have a rig that re-uses the waste water from the unit to use as my washing machine water! Easy setup.

I recommend RO water any day.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I can walk you thtough any install too.

  10. Color realistically comes with age. The older they get, generally the better looking they get. You can try "color ehancing" food, but realistically... has anyone actually proved that they work? I sure haven't seen any results from color enhancing food.

Another easy trick is good lighting. A high output T5 lighting system with 6000-10,000 K lights will enhance the color of the Taiwans easily. I find a combo light with an actinic light works the best (this is what I run on most of my tanks, freshwater or salt)

Other tricks include using dark colored backgrounds/substrates/decore to "trick" the eyes, and make them stand out better.

The bottom line is that there isn't much in the way of additives or chemicals that will actually "enhance" the color of fish.

    Hope this helps

  11. Hey everyone! My friend has recently decided to add a Motoro Ray to his indoor freshwater pond. The pond is a 500 Gallon, with a glass bottom.

I have searched high and low on google, and once again, come up with a contradictory set of information. As I have only used pool filter sand with my ray, I'm not sure what to tell him regarding the bare bottom. Are they ok with bare bottom tanks? I know they like to burry themselves in my sand, but at the same time bare bottom tanks are 90,000,000,000 times easier to clean.

    Any thoughts?

  12. Ok, so I don't have my hospital/quarantine tank up and running yet (have yet to find the right one..)

My poor yelow boxfish has ick. He needs to be isolated quickly as I do not want to have this stuff spread to my more expensive fish.

Does anyone have a quarantine tank up and running that I could 'rent' for a while until he gets better, or until I have mine setup and running? Preferably in the southeast/southwest so that it would be easy to come over and visit/medicate.

    Let me know!

    Thanks

    Mike
