  1. For the record: I don't mind pond snails at all. Some people are incredibly anal about NO pest snails in their tanks but I have no problem with them.. Does it really bother people to have a population of snails in their tanks that controls potential harmful waste in the tank? Oh oh, and they're FREE.

    I have several species of snails and they do rid the tank of algae and do a nice job of keeping the glass clean. I have never seen evidence of the pond snails eating live plants. Embrace them, the do a lot of good for the harmony of the tank. My suggestion would be to replace them with a nicer looking snail. Nothing prettier than seeing a tank with red ramshorn!

  2. Plants can do quite well without co2. I feel the substrate has more to do with success than anything. Simple sand is not quite enough to provide nutrients. I personally do a combination of organic ingredients covered in sand. Java moss can do quite well attached to rocks or perhaps java fern. Using these types of plants you may not have to change the substrate.
