  1. There is no Canadian guppy club either. Kind of sucks when just about every US state has one.
  2. Since the new import laws, good guppies are really hard to come by. There are some breeders in Canada but charge a hefty price. The best place to connect with guppy people would be the Calgary Aquarium Society. It meets next Tuesday. They have an all species show every two years and a monthly species jar show.
  3. Please make the breeding traps work ... you don't want to become a hooker.
  4. Works well! Don't forget to get some electrical zip ties. Makes construction much easier.
  5. Do you want to go with a regular 10 gallon? You could come take a look at some of my "alternate" shaped 10 gallon tanks. Would be a bit harder to do an undergravel in one but you could always change out the sand substrate if you don't get the results you seek. I probably have enough black magic to fill a 10 gallon for ya.
  6. Bear, Are you planning on going as high tech as your other tank? Would you consider the same idea as the tank I had at the show? I could bring you over to the dark side *muh ha ha*. Sand would totally clog an underground filter.
  7. Finally found some fish that I have been wanting for over 2 years and could not find, least killies ... ya baby!
  8. The Calgary Aquarium Society is having it's show and auction. There will be a class for betta and probably some in the auction. Great club to belong to, quite a few betta peeps. Plus you get discounts at fish stores! CAS Aquatic Weekend and Spring Auction March 15 & 16, 2014 Place: Montgomery Community Hall: 5003 - 16 Avenue NW (SW intersection of 16 Ave and Home Rd.) FISH SHOW Saturday and Sunday Noon to 5:00pm
  9. I am new to goldfish and have read they tend to carry parasites. Well ... my fave is rubbing on the sand. I would like to do a general parasite treatment on the whole lot of them. I have added salt and upped my water changes from once a week to every three days. Any other suggestions on what is the best meds to use? Their poop appears normal but sometimes does appear a bit stringy.
  10. Lots of info about any type of apple and mystery snails on this site: http://www.applesnail.net/
  11. A low tech tank is good for someone on a budget. A high tech tank is for someone who wants to put a lot of money into a glass box lol.
  12. Your commitment inspires me! I have recently discovered the joys of goldfish. Cute little guys with tons of personality. I also love planted tanks and hope to get up the nerve to combine the two. Algae is usually caused by either too much light or too much nutrients. You may want to plant your tank a bit heavier or reduce the duration of light. If you want, I have a ton of tiger vals that I can give you. A tank that is in balance usually has little algae.
  13. Welcome to the site! Many shrimp herders here and lots of people into planted tanks.
  14. Dear Santa, I would like some brine shrimp that hatch themselves. I would also like an aquarium that changes it's own water. While I am at it, could you please give me tiny plants and fish that will not outgrow my nano tank? P.S. I would love some fertilizer for my plants.
  15. If you want colored sand, Target is the best place to buy nice colored sand http://www.targetproducts.com/index.aspx. I use Black Magic. It is under the abrasive tab on the website.
  16. Did a google and he sounds like a great speaker! I think we have his book in the library.
  17. Tigs, if your interested I am sure I could bring you a few bags
  18. $10 for 50 lbs. In Calgary, you can buy it by the bag. I have not noticed a differece in sharpness between it and silica sand. It is listed as an abrasive, I assume anything is abrasive when shot at high pressure lol.

  20. Black Magic or another product called Green Diamond (just doing my first tank with Green Diamond). I did quite a bit of research and it was recommended highly. Black Magic may have been described under a slightly different name, Black Beauty etc. It is coal slag and I found it to be quite clean. I have been using it for almost a year and my plants are doing awesome. Originally I did a type of dirt tank covered with Black Magic. Won 1st for CAS aquarium beautiful (over 30 gallons) with the tank. It is a 110 gallon long so I had to source something that fit my budget. Since then I got lazy and just used the Black Magic in my shrimp tank and the growth the plants are having is awesome. It looks just like Tahitian moon sand for a fraction of the price!
  21. Play sand can't be beat as far as going for the natural look. The sand Target sells kicks things up to a whole nutter level lol.
