Good day. I've been lurking on AA ever since it started and have even been helping to spread the word about this great site. So why has it taken me so long to join? In my experience, every time I've posted something online my spam volume goes through the roof. However, as my current spam vs. legit emails is currently about 500:1 I figure it couldn't possibly get any worse...could it?
I live in St. Albert, just outside Edmonton and am a lifelong fish nut (family would probably emphasize the "nut" part). I'm old enough to know better than to post my age - let's just say I'm counting backwards!
I'm a former ACE member (in absentia - never made it to a meeting, but I've certainly frequented the auctions). I've always had a soft spot for cichlids, although if the pocketbook would allow I'd love to dabble in saltwater - dream. Currently I have three tanks running, with a couple spares on hand for Q's and fry.
Tank #1: 50g planted housing five discus, a dozen or so cardinal tetras, three cories and a bristlenose. Yes it's overstocked but a couple discus are runts (always had a soft spot for the underdogs) plus it's seriously overfiltered and babied - never more than a trace of nitrates. The fish are very happy and healthy.
Tank #2: 55g bare-bottomed with plants in pots and attached to driftwood housing two discus who I'm hoping will produce fry. So far haven't gotten past the wriggler stage - perhaps the tank is too big for them?
Tank #3: 33g with a few African cichlids - used to have a 72 chock full of them but when the stand broke I had to downsize and sell them. Actually beermeister indirectly helped me with this, as he copied my ad on the edmforsale newsgroup and posted it here (thanks!) But I couldn't find anyone to take my favourite (elongatus mpanga), so I got the 33 and kept him. His tankmates are a pearlmutt, couple rusties, a clown pleco and a male hybrid (one of my old OB pea**** fry that looks a lot like an electric blue). I know, hybrids are bad, but I didn't know this when I got the OBs, but he's my baby (well, by extension anyway) and we've bonded.
Looking forward to chatting with everyone. I'll try to post a pic of my favourite discus - a red spotted pigeon that I got from Dad's - oops, Nature's Corner - a year or two ago.
