  1. I think i've got to go back sometime, that tree root in the background is just begging for a solo shoot and i think would make an amazing toned B&W
  2. umm.... Sounds AWESOME!!! .... wait there's something missing here.... Link???
  3. So were there many ABN's like usual? I'm looking for a few and didn't attend?
  4. Thanks, the waterfall was shot at about 1 second exposure. I actually don't have any neutral density filters yet which would have made the shots from that day much better, that was shot at -5 stops exposure and F/22 to try to cut down on the light. It was a terrible day for photography as the light was direct and very bright. I will go back some day when it's better lighted. The only adjustments were decreasing exposure just a little more and as you can see the highlights are definately blown. Even after all that it's still too much light but oh well..
  5. The two Coastal shots are in Bellingham, Washington State. The Waterfal is whatcom county falls in the same area. I've got a bunch more shots i'll put up later.
  6. Just thought i'd post some of my pictures as i'm bored.
  7. They are indeed. Was more an experiment to see if they would be left alone... or if they were quick enough... i think they are losing the game though.
  8. Gotta love the hunting tendancies of angels. I put 4 neon tetras in with my two Altums... after 4 minutes there were 3 neon tetras...today there are 2 neon tetras...
  9. I'm not a planted guy but that would seem to me to be the issue right there, Most plants do well at around 6500K which is the bulb's color temperature not it's brightness or wattage. I run 10,000k and actinic bulbs and neither are ideal for growing plants. That's the realm of the good ol' 6500K bulbs at the proper wattage. Like i said, not a planted guy but seems to be my take on it.
  10. Agreed, need a little more research if someone has told you that. The PAR's are hitting near 400W MH setups not quite as good but certainly good enough to grow SPS.
  11. Perfect, I thought that substrate would be bad.
  12. Sure thing, make sure that gravel vac gets right down to the bottom and gets everything out. It's sure to be a nitrate factory as was the filter. Regular maintenance will maintain a stable and long term tank. GOOD LUCK!!!
  13. Do you have a gravel vac? If so it's time to use it. The gravel is likely the nitrate factory right now. You will have a lot of nitrate production based off your bioload to begin with let alone not knowing what the status of detritus in the gravel is right now. Do you have any prime? They do claim to be able to detoxify nitrate but the water changes you've been doing are the best thing for reducing nitrate. Next is to remove that source of nitrates. It's a shame to see some of the tanks you find for sale. What media was all replaced in the filter? You might want to get used to rinsing them well in tank water vs replacing them. Maintain your bacteria colonization and maintain a stable tank. Wish you the best in getting things dealt with. Let us know how badly gunked up the gravel is at it's the most likely source of your nitrate levels.
  14. How is the tank filtered? How clean is the gravel? Any ornaments that haven't been moved in a long time? How good/fresh is the test kit you are using? Nitrates are not a substance that comes from nowhere. It always has a source. The usual culprits are a buildup of waste in the filter media, gravel or in and under ornaments. Also what is the bio load like? What kind of gallonage is the tank and what size and quantity of fish are in there? Need more of this info to help out.
  15. Ok, at 3 inches they should definately be showing color. My dominant male Red Empress is starting to color at about 2 inches and a couple sub dominant are starting to show too. Definately have your lighting on during the day for whatever time period you choose. Mine are on from 4:00 pm to 10:30 pm. If you don't regularly have the lights on the fish will be scared of them and prone to hiding and dimming their colors.
  16. Hi, just wondering how old are the fish? what approximate length and do you know if they are male or female? There are a few things that will affect the coloration of the fish including gender. Females will tend to be drab and males the brightly colored ones. Additionally if they are exclusively males putting in a female or two will cause them to wear a lot brighter colors to impress. Finally in conjunction with the substrate color what is your lighting like? Some cichlids dislike bright lighting and will dull their own colors to blend in better with a bright environment. Just a few things to consider.
  17. My contribution. My Sun Catfish. I never knew he was there for several months. He used to hide - very snugly- in the back of an anchor in the previous owner's sunken ship theme. The only purpose of coming out was to eat... obviously.
  18. The FATTY!! My Sun Catfish... I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGUR!!!!
  19. My advice would to be getting a bag of white or nearwhite pool filter sand and a bag or two of Tahitian moonsand then. Mix to taste and serve.
  20. Not one that i've wrecked but i adopted a colony of Demasoni from a lady out near wetaskiwin and there was one particular fish that has no working swim bladder as far as i can discern. I was originally going to cull him as he didn't stand a chance right? Wrong... We now call him 'Gimps' He swims at a 45 degree angle to provide lift as well as propulsion and has taken to finding perches like the top of the filter to sit and survey the domain. Brilliantly colored too i might add. He did get beaten up badly once and i found him wedged in the tank at the back nearly lifeless but hospital tanked him and hand fed him back to health. Now cruising the newly redone Demasoni species only tank happily. As the previous poster the wife is very attached to him.
  21. Just thought i might as well start a portrait thread for the inhabitants of my 125 and a few others from my other tanks. I'll be getting up pictures as i get them. First off FTS when i bought the house and inherited the tank: FTS after i re-did it to my preferences: My Favorite Red Zebra: OB Peacock: More to come!
