  1. Here is a quote about what it is supposed to do: "The water output pulsates as the filter fills and empties. In this way it also acts as a wave maker, creating rhythmic currents inside the aquarium." It no longer does this and i don't know why?????
  2. It is a 2227 model. Thanks for the link. The Eheim manuals are minimalistic to say the least. There are lots of air bubbles coming out of my sprayer line also. I'm not sure how the air would be getting in, as it isn't being sucked up in the IN line to the filter (this line starts underwater). Northranger, does your float valve go up and down periodically?
  3. I have been using an Eheim pro canister filter for a couple years now. It is a fantastic filter, usually 100% quite. I took it apart to clean during a tank chagne, and now the float valve stays permanently in the all the way up position. This basically means it is alwasy on full blast. I'm not usre if this is how it was intended to run i8n the first place, but it used to kinda idle for a while (10-15 minutes) then shoot out a blast of water for a minute or two, repeating the cycle. Now it is just on. Is the float valve supposed to go up and down, and does anyone have any ideas how to fix it so it does? Any help appreciated.
  4. i went to Riverfront last night and got one. a bit more expensive ($10.99 vs $6.99) than Pisces, but closer to where i live. thanks for the help finding one. i lost a 30 gal full of cichlids due to my power going out while i was on holiday, and no one to bump start my filter. i'm looking for new baby fish if anyone has any. thanks again!
  5. It looks as if the propellor (impellor?) for these filters are replaceable, b/c they come out so easily. Does anyone know if you can buy just one of these parts anywhere in Calgary? Much thanks!
  6. i was thinking bleach might be usefull. what sort of mix ratio do you use? based on what i have read in this and other forums, for the most part there is nothing that works better or comes more recommended than good old fashioned water and elbow grease. i think one of us should develop a product to help with cleaning algae, might be an idea to take to the dragons (on cbc).
  7. Does anyone know the best way to clean algae off porous surfaces, like lava rock? Not sure how to tackle this, do they sell a product you can soak the rock in? What would work best for cleaning algae off tank ornaments with little nooks and crannies in them (hard to get at with a scrubber)? Just thought I am likely not the first person to wonder this so it would be great to learn from some of the combined experience here on this excellent forum. Thanks!
  8. Thanks for input guys. So based on what I've read and all of your opinions the black faces isn't a health issue, just a genetic characteristic. As for the slow fishes, they do seem a bit more active now, maybe it was just a time of day i was looking at them. Thanks again!
  9. This doesn't seem to be actual emergency status, but does seem to be progressively worse. Is black marks on the face of a yellow lab mean some sort of disease? I have done some searches on the internet for this problem, and all i can come up with is that it is a heretatary trait that doesn't seam to be hurtfull expcept for asthetics. but, my labs seem to be way more lathargic, and they have more dark markings on there face than ever. can someone suggest what might be there problem, or maybe where i could inquire more about this? any help very appreciated (by all of us)!
  10. i guess removing the things they hide behind is the (not so) easiest way to catch them. a bigger net might also be part of the answer for me. i didn't know they 'slept' per say, i will have to try finding them asleep sometime and get there schedule down. thanks alot for the input fellow fish lovers! (not that i want to risk harming my fish, but does anyone know about the shocking idea?)
  11. I am probably not the only one with this experience.... When I try to catch fish for moving into another tank, they are the quickest things in the world, hide everywhere, and basically make me totally frustrated and fishless!!!!!!!! Does anyone have any tricks how to catch the lil ninjas? Now i am slightly serious here....what about a very mild electrical shock? You know how biologists use electro-fishing to catch fish in rivers and lakes, they shock them, tag and measure them, then release them and they are no worse for wear. Anyone know about this or how i can make a aquarium sized electro-shocker? Any help or ideas appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. sorry to re-comandeeer the thread, lol..... where would i find one a couple of those Zebra Nerite snails? does the LFS have them? i am in calgary, can someone recommend a LFS for me to try? there are 4 cichlids in the tank (4.5" pseudotropheus flavus, 2.5" convict, 5" chipokee, 3" yellow lab) are there any other algae eating fish that might work besides snails or plecos? much thanks for your help. PS. the auction was great!
  13. Can anyone suggest what kind of algae eater would be good for a cichlid tank? i have four cichlid in a 33 gal tank, algae is growing on the glass. i am not sure what would be best to eat the algae. i have heard snails might be good, but i've heard that they can multiply and give you a snail infestation. can someone make some suggestions for algae eating fish? or if someone actually has some algae eaters they wanna sell?
