  1. So are you saying there is no export ban on blacks ? LOL, just checked and it was you who passed on the info JORG. I can't comment on it, haven't heard anything. I'll post it on www.arowanaclub.ca and see what the guys elsewhere in Canada say...
  2. Hmm...someone on another thread here says that the guy at "Golds" told him that Black Arows were no longer to be exported from Brazil. I remember years back juvenile blacks would come into stores in same numbers and about same price as juvenile silvers.
  3. I'd go with Koi in one tank (cheap, no heating required), and Asian arowana in the other. You could get 12 juvenile HBRTG aros shipped to you for under $4000. Raise them up for 4 years and then breed them. That would be a hoot! Hmm...if you want "wow factor", forget the above and go with a few arapaima instead! Just think of the fun you could have in a few years time feeding them whole chickens or small pigs (just joking! )
  4. Where did you get this information?
  5. Rather bizarre what? And I was born on the same day as Einstein, and though that doesn't make me smart; I am weird and hard to understand sometimes. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ripost Seems to me Toitiris went through a bit of trouble to answer your question. Why leave it unfinished? You've got ME wondering what kind of lung fish you have now! :smokey:
  6. Hi guys - some big news for the Canadian Asian arowana hobby. Check out Canada's first dedicated Asian arowana site at www.arowanaclub.ca The site is a joint venture with the admin of arowanaclub.com out of Singapore. As a gift to the Asian arowana hobby in Canada, Dragonfish.ca is raffling off a Panda Gold Supreme Asian arowana to whoever can guess the price of gold on a specified day! The regular retail price for such a fish is about $1000 in Canada! Best of luck to all!
  7. I would love to see pic's as well i've always wanted one even just a redtail gold but really can't sfford one so i found a good deal on a green and i love him but some day i'll have one with a little more color. Corvette, consider selling your green to Pimpdocta (just joking!) and get an RTG off me when I am in Singapore in another 6 weeks! Better yet, you two should both consider getting a new fish as I could save you more money by combining the shipping. I should be able to source a low end RTG and ship to Alberta, Canada for around $375. This would include all taxes and shipping. Fish would still come with a certificate of course. Or for around $500 I should be able to source you a slightly higher quality RTG. Prices are low these days in Asia for common RTG's. You can follow what I am up to on www.dragonfish.ca
  8. My absolute favourite place to shop for African oddballs is http://www.rehobothaquatics.com/ The owner is named Toyin and is super helpful and friendly. He once gave me a cash refund (bank deposit) when a couple fish died on arrival. This contrasts with most operations which will offer you a "credit" to next order...which is fine....unless you don't plan to order from them again lol
  9. Nice blush you have coming on there. I'd guess the fish is around 14-16 months old? Do you have photos of the fish when young? It would be neat to put a collage together where you could show its colour development over time.
  10. Ah, your PBass look to be Temenses? I love Temenses colouration as adults. Nice Indo (?) dat too! Is his colouration always strong? What size tank do you have?
  11. I didn't know this guy's tank was already kind of famous when I interviewed him.... http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/people...etherlands.html
  12. Look here, J & L Aquatics, for one. Looking at about $550 after tax and shipping on the 1/10hp...not a cheap toy. My kid's school back in BC set up a DIY chiller. They got a garden hose which they snaked into the building, into the classroom, and then into a large 200 gallon aquarium; then they threaded it around the bottom of the aquarium (covered it up with rocks and sand), before snaking it back out the aquarium, out of the room, and out of the building. Then they ran the hose with cold water 24 hours a day! The tank was used to hatch salmon eggs as part of a class project (the salmon fry were later released into a local stream). Given that water conservation is a pressing issue in many parts of the world these days, this approach may not be ethical, ecologically sustainable, or economical. All depends on where you live and how much local water there is I guess. As a fall-back DIY chiller for anyone whose purchased chiller breaks down, the idea might have merrit.
  13. I had three problems with the photography: 1. my camera fogged up when we went to look at the rays 2. I went with "auto" for setting shutter speed, should have chosen manually 3. Keeping up with Nico running around meant I had to take pics in a bit of a hurry Hopefully I'll do a follow-up article on those guys one day... Thanks for the compliments - it was fun to research, write up, and share.
  14. Looks like a nice Peacock cichlid too. Is that a jumbo clown loach in back? Hard to make out...
  15. Sounds like a healthy mix you have there. Does it come apart when you thaw it? When I kept silver aros I used to feed beef heart and Hikari Koi pellets. the ingredient list of the Koi pellets is remarkably similar (identical?) to that for the Hikari aro sticks, but at half the price... When I got into keeping Asian aros, I began using kingworm gut loaded on carrots and then frozen; kind of gross, but the kingworms poop as they freeze and so your aro gets a "clean" kingworm filled with carrots (and beta carotine for colour) when you thaw them out for feeding. I learned that trick from a hard core aro keeper in Vancouver... Kingworms can be bought in bulk for a cheap price (1000 for around $30-40). I also try to get my Asian aros onto market prawn and pellets as a staple diet. The live kingworms and earthworms (red wrigglers) become a treat. I got away from crickets a long time ago as they have the nutritional benefit of "popcorn".
  16. Hi guys - hope you like the article. http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/people...Frank_Nico.html I have some more really cool stuff in the pipeline, will keep you posted...
  17. That sounds like a super cool fish! I can't wait to see some photos. I'm looking to build out my personal collection within the next half year while I am living in Asia. I'll be looking for advice and opinions on my journey of hobby/personal discovery.
  18. Oh you'd be surprised, the cost is going down on these guys all the time, especially with the strengthening Canadian dollar. You just wait a few months for the new currency rates to work their way through the system and you may find them irresistably priced!
  19. I am a keeper of Asian arowanas.  Cool! What do you have?
  20. Hi guys - as the topic states, I am just wondering who keeps Asian arowana on the board. I know there was a fellow some time ago who had an Asian arowana community tank which he had for sale. Then I seem to recall another fellow too? Anyone out there? Maybe I should extend the question to who would LIKE to keep an Asian arowana?
  21. I finally got around to uploading photos from our last shipment of Asian arowana into Vancouver. Check them out at www.dragonfish.ca This order included Platinum Head Xbacks, Gold Xbacks, Panda Gold Supremes, Panda Super Reds, and I think one Marble Blue Xback (gotta check with Kenta on that last one - my living in Denmark makes it pretty hard to know what the heck is going on sometimes!! lol). I should have all the fish id'd properly on the site very soon...
  22. I don't see siamese-twin aros hitting the market soon (but you never know). As for the tail-less one, well, unfortunately it is part of a trend on the part of some aquarists to go for freaky looking fish. The latest fad to hit the Asian arowana market is for "King arowana". These guys are basically hunchbacked arowana with shortened spines and extreme spinal curvature. I really, really, really hope that these particular fish are just a fad that go away soon. I am sure until recently such fish were culled. It makes me wonder what is next...wouldn't surprise me if Asian arowana with burnt off gill plates due to extreme gill curl are somehow marketed as being "extra special" somehow. This would allow all the inept farmers or aro keepers to get rid of their defective stock LOL.
  23. I just published a new article on the topic of "Arowana fossils". Check it out at: http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/travel...sid_Fossil.html I should have another couple really cool articles posted shortly as well (European aro keepers, ray keepers, aquarium reviews and European shop reviews) Cheers
