  1. Your thread got me searching and I found these:

    http://angelfins.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28221&products_id=1586

They don't come in 72" but the LEDs can be somewhat customized depending on what you would like.

    Pretty cheap too.

I am pretty sure that those ones don't offer the light spectrum that will grow plants. I have Beamswork LED's as well as Current brand LED lights over my fry tanks, and keeping even java moss alive is impossible, my Finnex is a tad better, but it's still tough. LED's for specific planted tanks offer different light spectrum, and ZooMed does offer special plant modules that contain 1 6000K LED and 2 two blue 465nm LEDS.

The fixture I ordered has 25 different color LED's to cover the entire spectrum of light. So there is quite a bit to it.

Thus the price difference for example for Marineland regular and Marineland planted.

You can replace the original modules that contain 4 white and 2 blue LEDs with 4 white and 2 red LEDs (620 - 630 nm). I think this maybe the new thing, LEDS that can be replaced when burnt out.

  2. I like pool filter sand. It's a larger sieve size than most aquatic sand so it doesn't disturb as easily. It's supposed to be cleaner than playsand but I've never used playsand so I can confirm that. It is a silica sand so you need to be more careful when dealing with the dust.

  3. That's so funny Ron. After staring at my cousin's pondS for so long on facebook, I want to build a pond and stream out back too! It's probably more work than grass to maintain :P but so relaxing when you get to enjoy.

The only thing I'm a little worried about is resale if I should want to sell my house. What is your view?

Not sure but I don't plan on moving anytime in the near or distant future.

Anything over 24" deep needs a pool permit and a 6' tall locking fence, so pretty much all of my backyard projects are 24" deep. I have a few customers who keep their fish in their ponds over winter w/o problems - yes, even koi will overwinter in a 24" deep pond. Some shut down the pump and place a bubbler in, others have an oversized pump and just run the system all year - just make sure water stays in the system, and you'll be good.

I always use a flexible liner. I put a layer of felt underlay between the liner and ground, which seems to protect against frost heaving quite well. I've used the same materials in town and out of town and have never had a problem with burrowing animals (I'm guessing you mean something more substantial than earthworms!).

Not sure what the regulations are in the MD but I'll check into it, but I've seen some other ponds on surrounding acreages. I have plenty of moles around and I would go berserk if they tunneled into my pond.

Just like this forum, there are some very good pond forums out there. With every question you could possibly think of, answered.

If a little old lady in Wisconsin can dig 2 ponds by herself, you can definitely figure out how to do this!!!

Really, I should see if she's available.... :P

  4. I've built a few. I worked on one project where the pond was 100' long, 80' wide, around 10' deep, had a wetlands filtration system that was 10x20x2' and a 30' streem... I believe the bill on that one was around the $300K mark. It took us a couple months of 12hr days, some heavy machinery, and some waterway diversion, but MAN does it look good!

Feel free to ask any questions on the open forum, or PM me if you prefer.

That sounds awesome, I wish I could afford something like that.

I'm thinking about something in the 15,000 - 25,000 gallon range but I have a high water table so I may need to have it come a couple feet above ground.

Not sure what I want to line it with as I am fearful of burrowing critters getting through a soft liner. I've heard of spray on cement lining but I can't find it anywhere, ever heard or worked with it? What are options for filtering all year round?

    Thanks,

    Ron

  5. Hello,

I am thinking of building a very large pond over the next couple of years and was wondering if there was anyone on here with lots of experience that wouldn't mind me picking their brain for some help. I contacted a professional pond builder but they gave me a quote that was more than both of my vehicles.....when they were new !!!!!

I may only excavate and line it this coming spring and worry about filling and filtering the year after.

    Thanks,

    Ron

  6. Thanks guys. Finding food for Sterlets is almost as hard as getting them. I am currently using Hikari Sturgeon food but I've read that they discontinued it. I did find some remaining stock in the US and it's on the way. A good friend of mine is also getting me some Tetra Sterlet Sticks which I hope they like and remains available.

  7. Are you still filtering thru an aquaponics system? I moved this summer and shut mine down - I miss it!

I am but I also have a Eheim 2262 filtering this stock tank. All I have growing now is an out of control basil plant that I have to trim every couple of days or it will flower. I had a couple 4'+ green onions in there but they were just falling over and getting in the way. Now that golf season is over, I'll start some new plants.

  8. I haven't posted this one in a long time, it's my last of the 5 Sterlets I got a while back.

I think he's somewhere between 20" and 24", it's a 7" Imperial Flower loach in the pic below for comparison.

Sorry for the crappy pics but it's hard to photograph it in the stock tank especially cause it hardly stops swimming. I have a lead on some sturgeon that are going to be legally imported so hopefully I can get a couple friends for him/her.

    Thanks for looking,

    Ron

  9. I have never used a Eheim but that is the direction I'm leaning to right now, going to keep it simple and try the classic line 2217 / 600 to replace the 405's

I prefer the tray system in the Pro 3 models. The only Classics I am running right now are a 2213 and a 2262. The 2213 has a basket for all the media which makes it easy to remove and backwash. I haven't had to clean the 2262 yet, I am not looking forward to that day.

  10. Only article I've read on them says they are going to be very economical. They definitely remind me of Kotobuki filters but are going to be only a fraction of the price. I am a BIG Eheim fan but for the price, I may hook one up as back up filter on my next tank.

Edit: Found some pricing online, $89.95 for the 190 GPH model to $165.95 for the 345 GPH model.

  11. I didn't think we could get them here. i'm jealous. are they an expensive fish?

Prices have fluctuated in the last year. My original ones that I got late last year were $500 for 10. Earlier this year they were slightly cheaper but this last shipment they were less than half of what I paid for my originals.

  12. I am definitely an Eheim fan, I have a 2213, 2075 Pro 3, 2076 Pro 3e, 2078 Pro 3e and the 2262 monster running right now. I haven't used any other brands but there are some people on here that swear by Rena and maybe some day I will try one.

If you get a Pro 3 or Pro 3e, the media is held in baskets. I just cleaned one the other day, it was very quick and easy.

  13. Ooooh...looks nice!!!

Very good looking. The shrimp tubes set up in that manner with the bright green plants behind remind me of a set of cabins near Revelstoke.

    Thanks.

I scooped out 36 of my nicer OEBTs, acclimatized them and added them to my new tank.

I also added 6 CPO, they better keep their little orange claws off the OEBTs....LOL.
