  1. Oh, and I pretty much have the same plants as you in my tank(15 gal), and they grow just fine w/out Co2, I bought a good sand substrate, and add 1/2 a cap of flourish excel every 2 weeks. Got the Flourish Excel for 15.99 on sale, and its lasted me for over a year now.

Plus, with Co2 your tank will grow a lot faster, which will require weekly trimming in most cases. I dont think I would Co2 anything lower than a 50 gal tank...most plants outgrow the 10-15gal so quick.

  2. I have a Fluval Flora tank that came with the Co2 system, it worked great for the first 6 months, then a leak started. I wouldn't waste any money on a cheap system. Checkout the DIY section on how to build a correct system for just over $100 that will last you a long time, plus much cheaper to maintain (refill tank every 3-6months depending on size). The problem with the Fluval systems is the upkeep cost of the tiny co2 canister, and the cheap build of the system overall. You might find someone who will build a system for you for a fee & parts, or i've seen a few sold in the classifieds, just keep your eyes open.

  3. I feed NLS Pellets daily to my GBR / Cherry Shrimp / Rainbows tank, I have sand substrate and never had this problem. I feed very little, 2-3 pellets at the most, along with some other type of food. They usually eat it up within 5-10minutes. Like Vallisneria suggested, you might be feeding too much. Do you have any snails, shrimp in the tank that can help clean up? If your pleco isn't cleaning up leftovers, then theres def way to much food in the tank...they are like garbage trucks.

  4. If you want to give the eggs a chance, you'll want to move them into a barebottom tank. You could move them into the shrimp tank, but the eggs need very clean water, and aeration since the parents are no longer taking care of the eggs (fanning the eggs). You will also need to treat the water with methylene blue or 3% Hydrogen Peroxide in order to prevent fungus from growing on the eggs. If your not seeing any black dots in the eggs after 3 days, then they probably weren't fertalized. Is this their first spawn? It will take them a few tries before they get it right. I would just prepare for the next batch of eggs, which will happen in 2-3 weeks.

If you want to let the parents take care of the eggs to see how they do, you can toss them into your 36 bowfront, add a couple spawning surfaces, and leave it barebottom with a sponge filter. 50% water changes weekly. If you pull the eggs from the parents, you may consider a 5-10 gallon tank with sponge filter, let the eggs hatch, and raise them for 2-3 weeks in the small tank, then move them into your 36 gallon to grow out (still a bit small for grow out)

Check out this video, Jazzy did a great job explaining the breeding of Angel's

  5. I have one. Make sure you secure the 3d backdrop with the lamp clamp before you add water...I know with mine the pads that are suppose to make it stick didn't hold.

You might want to add some extra sand or substrate first before you add the pebble substrate that came with the tank (its not alot).

A lot of the tanks when they first came out had faulty lamps that would short circuit, if you have any problems with it, the Fluval rep will replace it for free (they did on my tank anyhow).

Thats about it, its a great lil tank, but Co2 system sucks and gets expensive. The seal on my nozzle wore out after just 4 months.

Plants grow like crazy in it though, I like the fert for it.

Good luck, post some pictures when your done setting it up.

  6. thanks Al. I have been following your tips too. I think it might be water quality too. the pair are in a bb tank on their last attempt. I knew they would lay eggs soon so I ready the meth blue and let nature takes its course.but yeah after a day or so the eggs started to turn white again.

Dont use the meth blue if your going to leave the parents in the tank to take care of the eggs. I've heard that meth blue damages the scales of adults, plus it will dye them blue. Only use it if you place the eggs in its own tank.

Like Al suggested, hydrogen peroxide will be fine with the parents in tank.

  7. I been culling yesterday and today....I probably removed about 20-30 that had short gills (still have at least 100+ left, didn't even put a dent into the population :P)...not really sure what else to look for, but I remember seeing something about culling on the angelfish.net forums, so I will check there. They are eating a ton of flake now, heaing 100 snaps on the surface when they feed is pretty funny and exciting. I been hand feeding them some frozen BBS cubes, they love it. Every once in a while they will tap my finger thinking its food hehe.

I usually shut off the sponge and hang on filters during feeding as I dont want to waste the food, plus with the hang on circulation it gets messy all over the tank. No more have died since the mysterious deaths which I'm pretty sure was due to a bad batch of BBS.

Rebel, its natural that some eggs will turn white, if you want to check to see if your eggs are fertile just pull them once you see that they have finished, and are fanning the eggs. If they are new parents, it will take them anywhere from 2 to 5 days (or in some cases never) before they will get the hang of it. If you see that the eggs turn white after just 2-3 hours then maybe they are doing something wrong. If you see that they are slowly turning white over time, its most likely just fungus, which either means that your water quality is bad, and or your parents arent eating the white eggs preventing fungus from spreading to other eggs nearby. Either way, one sure way to check is to pull the eggs, throw them in a 5-10 gallon tank, use an air stone or just the tube and stick it near the eggs, add some anti-fungi and wait 48 hours and check for wigglers (hard to see, you really have to look close).

What kind of tank setup are your Angels in? Are they in a breeder tank or community?

    Thanks for the replys

  8. Hello all,

Been a while since I posted any pictures. I haven't had any more fry die until today. I got home from work and fished out 12 dead, and half dead fry at the bottom of the tank...not really sure why, all I can think of is a bad batch of BBS. I have been adding crushed flakes over the last week with the BBS feedings. They seem to be eating it all up. I started giving only crushed flakes in the morning feeding for the past few days. I think my tank is getting a bit overpopulated, the fry are getting fairly large, and I have a ton of em.

Here are some more pictures. First one is fry at day 39, the rest I took tonight, which would be day 49. At what point can I start selling / giving away these guys? I'm also thinking about selling / trading the parents, and getting a Philippine Pair from Fairdeals.

  9. I picked up a nice female Ram at Riverside yesterday, They are already showing signs of spawning behaviour.

The Male was pretty excited to see another female, hes been following her around the whole day...Lets hope they

find the nice cave I built for them using half young coconut, covered with java moss.

  10. very cool, the female will usually approach the male and torque her body slightly and start fanning her fins really fast...its one of the reasons I like them so much. They have so much personality, and are super cool to watch.

When my female is ready to spawn, she gets right up close to the male and start doing her thing, then sprint away to her spawn spot, back and forth until the male finally catches on and follows her hehe.

If you see her belly get really pink, you'll know shes ready. Mine spawn for me usually every 7-9 days.

  11. My GBR's would attack the cherry shrimp I had in the tank as well. I've removed them since, only had about 4 out of 12 left by the time i noticed. Hopefully they can repopulate, I got 1 baby, 2 females and 1 male left.

  12. I currently have a GBR pair as well. The male i've had for about a year now, and he has gone into several different tanks never an issue. The female is way more sensitive, tried to move her once while I was cleaning out the tank and re-organizing the plants, found her gaspin at the top. She was able to recover and have not moved her since. I find with GBR you never really know how well they do until you get them home, I've had instances where they died within the first week, I'd return them and get a new one and it would do fine, same setup, water etc.

Some say they are an easy fish to keep, some say there are extremely difficult, I guess it all depends. Just give them lots of caves and hiding places, and like everyone else said, I also find that they do much better with other fish around them, they can be pretty shy if left by themselves.

    Good luck

  13. You are probably losing fry after your brine shrimp culture is older than 36 hrs. I don't use a culture after that because I ran into a similar problem. Your fry look good.

I keep them in the fridge, from what I've read on several forums this is a common thing people do, didn't know that would have any impact. Thanks for the heads up.

So, do you have 3 hatchery's going then for each of your feedings? I am running 2 of them, 1st one at 7:30 am - 2nd at 11pm, I feed 7:30am 5pm and 11pm

  14. Hello again,

Okay, everything has been going well so far. I have moved them into a 45 Gallon tank now, which they seem to be enjoying.

Since my last post, I have probably lost another 10-12 fry, not sure exactly why, but my guess is that I overfeed them a few times. They looked

very healthy, but I noticed 3-4 fry dead after feeding them. This happened 2 days in a row, so I scaled back on the amout of BBS I would

squirt in. Generally, 1 tsp of hatched BBS, would last me for 2 feedings. I would feed about 1/4, wait to see how full the bellies get, then feed another 1/4.

I haven't had any deaths in the past 5 days so everything seems to be going well. I am doing 30% water changes daily after last feeding.

I took a few more pictures, they are camera shy and very quick, so not the best quality. I also uploaded some videos of my spawning Pairs, as well as feeding the fry.

  15. nice development for your brood Ghost. nice pics too.

just to interject, my pair laid eggs again and 90% turned white the next day. and today all the eggs are gone. maybe I don't know whats wrong with this too. I will let them pair still for the next 2 spawn and if it fails again I will change the male. I'm telling this cause I just wanted to ask if this kind of stuff happened to your pair before you got successful in getting fry. thanks

My pair usually ate the eggs before I had a chance to remove them the first 2x (although I didn't care to pull them back then). How many times have they spawned for you? And how old is the pair? Are you sure that you have a Male/Female and not 2 females?

If that was they're first spawn, I would let them try at least 2 more times. If anything, you could just give it a try and pull the eggs and use Methylene Blue and see what happens to the eggs. If you have a spare 20+ gallon tank, you could try and remove them from the main tank when you notice spawning behaviour, toss a blanket over top of the tank and let them have as much peace as possible.

It just takes time, hopefully they will get it next try :) good luck

  16. Alright as promised, here is my Day 15 update!

Everything has been going really well, I have only lost about 3-4 more frysince last update, they were tiny and had obviously not been eating. Otherwise, all the others are growing like crazy.

    My daily process this far has been;

    Feeding

    7:30am (before work)

4:30pm (after work) clean up left over's 45mins later

10:30 (before bed) 20% Water change, clean up left over's. 45mins later

I use an Eyedropper to feed the fry. After the BBS have collected at the bottomof my glass bowl, I suck up 0.5ml (Days 8-11) or 1 ml (Days 12-15).

This has been working great so far. On day 8 I fed them about 1ml which was waytoo much, so you'll have to experiment yourself to see how much they eat.

    Water Changes

20% change (2 gallons) after last feeding around 11:15pm. I conditionmy water with Prime 0.2ml using eyedropper.

Now, I've been reading a lot of posts in regards to water changes (on this andother sites) and everyone seems to be doing it differently. Some say

you should do 10% water change after every feeding, some say massive waterchanges of about 70-80% is the way to go. Some say 50% is a good number.

Anyways, I don't have the time to feed, wait 45mins and do a water change everyfeeding. The 20% water changes every night before bed has been working

great for me thus far, and I have hardly lost any fry. I do keep the tank veryclean.

I think once the fry are getting bigger, and they start producing more wasteetc I will start to do 50% water changes, but for now I don't feel it is necessary.

I also plan on adding plants to help with the water quality (I'm thinking afterDay 30-40.)

Water changes and clean up for the first few days were more challenging, as thefry are so small and uncoordinated. Now, they move out of the way and huddle upin a corner when I do my cleaning and water changes, which is nice, only takesabout 5-10mins to do it all.

    Baby Brine Shrimp

I only used about half a teaspoon of eggs at the start (days 8-11),which lasted me for 3 feedings plus some.

I ran 2 batches at a time, First batch at 7:30 AM and second at 4:30pm. Nowthat they are bigger, I am just doing 1 batch of

1 teaspoon. I use a coffee filter to rinse off the BBS with tap water, thenplace them into a glass bowl and throw them in the fridge after my firstfeeding.

They will stay alive in the fridge for 1-2 days. I make a fresh batch every 24hours, so the leftovers I toss into a mini ice cube tray and freeze them

as treats for my other fish.

Well, I have to say, it's been a joy watching these guys grow in this shortamount of time. They have pretty much tripled in size and have even started torecognize me when I get close to the tank.

I can see they're lil eyes looking and checking me out. They don't have anycolors yet, but I see a shimmer as they turn, I can make out tiny fins on thesides and starting on the top. It's pretty cool

I think that's all I have for now, I may read over it in a while and add some stuff,or fix mistakes. I took a few more pictures of the lil guys, here they are.

I should also add, I am on the lookout for a 33 gallon + tank to move theseguys into, would be nice if it came with a heater, filter, air pump. If youfind a good deal for me, let me know muchappreciated,

    till next time,

    Cheers,

PS: The pictures only show about half of the fry, I'll try and get a picture ofthem all next time, but they get scared and scatter anytime I try and take apicture.

  17. Ok, its day 8...the fry are doing great so far...I've had about 6 dead ones so far, and did my first 20% water change. I will do 10% (1 gallon) changes daily from now on.

I can't believe how full the fry get, looks like they are about to blow up after feeding.

My Angel's in the main tank are at it again, cleaning the pot and will probably spawn within the next couple days. Not exactly sure what I will do with them, I might go buy a 10 gallon and raise a 2nd spawn, just in case something goes wrong with my first spawn.

I'll add some pictures when they are 15 days old or something.
