  1. i just built a trop[ical pond in my garage and i used a 120 volt 1500 watt hot water tank heater hooked up to a dimmer switch and run to a standard household outlet keeps it a balmy 80 in my garage with no issues and the whole thing cost me about $50 and took a grand total of 2 hours to plan build and install , the tinkering with heat takes a good day or so mine is aobut 1000 gallons or so
  2. there crazy thats for sure, i have a few big tanks kicking around but i just dont want to dedicate a big one for a coupke of these things if all they do is lay on the bottom like a lungfish but what i have seen on you tube, and different animal type shows along with river monsters i think i may go ahead and get them.
  3. i have come across a guy who is wanting to sell me some electric eels 4 x 3 feet and about as thick around as your fist now my question is this , has anyone had any of these and are they active, the reason i ask is because i dont want to dedicate a huge tank for a lump that sits and does nothing and that can kill me.. that being said if they are active and actively hunt than i would be more inclined however i am interested in these bad boys just dont want to lose a huge tank to some BORING fish so to speak. any thoughts or input would be appreciated. and yes i know they can kill you and yes i know with multiples it increases the likely hood of being zapped and yes i get it they are electric. lol
  4. cloverdale paint has RED DEVIL silicone and it doesnt say specifically aquarium safe but it is for use below the water line and has no mold/mildew resistance in it and it was about $699 for a tube, super cheap and red devil makes some pretty good products. canadian tire / home depot have stuff too but it all says not for use below the water line
  5. Well thank you all for the tips and thoughts, but i just traded my filters around so lets see em swim up the outlet on my rena hahaha.
  6. true, natural instincts ... but annoying instincts In nature they are known to be able to crawl overland to new water habitats. Perhaps another way nature has provided them to colonize new territory. Could be they are just doing what comes naturally!
  7. harold is the BEST lfs "guy" by far i have never been but the stuff i got from him is fantastic <red tail cat>
  8. Hello all... i have a strange question for you , any input or advice would be appreciated in my predator tank i have 3 pie bald clarius catfish, very cool fish , love em fun to watch BUT.... when the lights go out for the night they are driving me INSANE. i shut down the lights on my tank minding my own business chillin out watchin Mantracker and i can hear a splash followed by a whole bunch of splashin followed by the sound of what i thought was a fish on the floor, not the case however it seems these things when the lights go out want to swim upstream into my aq 110's, its like they are damn salmon trying to go up a water fall to spawn and it is driving me up the friggin wall does anyone know why they would do this..... not to mention that my wife typically gets up before me in the am and twice now i have been in "trouble" because she half asleep has stepped in a "lake" of water from these catfish. they are all super well fed and my other fish arent hassleing them, i have acctually sat in my kitchen in the dark to CSI what the hell is happening and there is no rhyme or reason for it at lights out they start this crap, they'll go for a half hour or so ... then nothing for 2 3 hours then back at it again, now im certain that these thing had the not run into my biocubes would make it in there, so does anyone know how i can stop them from doing that?? any thoughts would be appreciated. i get into enough trouble with the wife all on my own these cats are gonna get me killed lol
  9. they are a common wood frog, only really aquatic this time of year, i catch em at my moms house and feed them to my snakeheads i had to id them myself to verify they wouldnt harm my babies for local amphibians and other such alberta related creepy crawlers go here http://www.srd.alberta.ca/BiodiversityStewardship/WildSpecies/Amphibians/Frogs/Default.aspx thats the frog link but im sure you can figure out the website navigation on the left for other such unknown beasties
  10. Harold , you hooked me up with that red tail cat and he is awesome, he was originally purchased just to run clean up crew but now has become a focal point in my predator tank

thanks again, and let me know when the new monsters arrive

  11. just an excuse to buy bigger go big or go home?..... IMO, only the bichir would fit in a 120, the others would get too big.
  12. if the hubby wants "real" fish, i have some predatory fish for sale, i have spotted florida gars about 12-14 inches, and i have some bullseye snakeheads aka cobra's i have red or giant snakeheads i have red tail snakeheads smaller I have a bowfin, canadian fish similiar in nature and genetic design as the snakeheads b owfins have been around for 150 000 000 years they lived when the dinosaurs were around , crazy i have a 6 in sengalus standard issue birchir dont get me wrong i love these fish but, i could always thin out the herd and make room for some of my new MONSTERS that are coming and no these feed nothing like piranha, these guys are nasty nasty and will eat anything , your eel could definately stay , but your cichlids would be lunch and i have found you a black ghost knife so let me know if your interested at all, i am heading to calgary on sat so need to know before hand

  14. go to your local habitat for humanities re store and ee if you can find what i found, which is a 3 foot ho t5 light bar designed for under counter lighting, , i have 2 3 foot bulbs one running 2100k and the other running a 4100 k bulb, i dont grow plants because id reather buy fish but i will say the 2 differentiated k's on the bulbs really helped out with aesthetics one has a more blueish tinnge one is yellow, and i siliconed it to the black plastic at thee top of the tank over my glass lid, i have a 3 inch gap on my glass lid and you just have to fill er up a bit when it gets low, dont blow your wad on a big expensive lighting system, if you cant find a 3 foot ho t5 , same store look for under counter halogen lighting kit, there all shapes and sizes but i just wired up 5 in a 55 gallon in a home made canopy and i did the same think just get a couple different lights ie 2100k and 4100 k and your laughing,
  15. this has been both educational , and very frustrating, forget pike...... i just cant get over that i can legally posses snakeheads which are known to devastate ecosystems but the thought of yankin some damn pike out of a slough is poo pooo'd because of the whats if's and maybe howcomes like everything els out there it doesnt make sence lol so in conclusion...... forget the pike
  16. no one said release...... im not some 15 year dipshit here people. everyone always looks at the doom and gloom , what xabout hey guy thats cool you want to study and habitate a local fish... im wondering how noone realizes i have 6 bullseye snakeheads in a tank right now... not planning on releasing thm, nor would i rlease a damn pike in some body of watr there arent already pike in....
  17. Its not that i dont understand th laws and regs as far as transportation of an alien species, but this is a local fish, that if released would simply carry out a normal life in a normal habitat. if anything here my snakeheads would be more dangerous but im not a dipsh*t here no one is planning on releasing anything and for all who suggested why not this species and that species i appreciat the feed back however my goal was to emulate a local predator and its surroundings not just pick a mean/pretty fish, there are thousands of fish that i could go buy for sh*ts and giggles but i was looking to replicate a local predator. just by looking and listening to the posts from other members it simply doesnt seem worth the stink, i just think it is stupid that an aquarist trying to replicate a local predator and it habitat is poo poo'd . and yes florida gars are cool. and peacock bass dont really turn my crank im thinking i will just get something else such as an arrowana or some more snakeheads...maybe someone has thoughts on what the next big mean SOB might be. Im just so tired of the same crap , cichlids, piranhas,I want something unique and a convrsation piece, and interesting to watch , I want my people to come in my house and be" wtf is that" lol and have something different. and to whomever posted the licencing information thanks again however pike are not part of that deal so no dice. and its regarding ponds not th aquarium group i got some funny responces on the phone.. I appologize looking back the EEEEE on my keyboard is frapping out here not gonna bother with spelling and grammar
  18. Yeah im from vancouver island aswell and elk lake is bad, but im not planning on introducing a new species here just trying to raise a local fish indoors not some alien species
  19. I just thought , my snakeheads are big nasty eating machines, why not try and simulate a local predator and its habitat, Im sure th transportation issue is the same as why snakeheads arent allowed in th states anymore, the possibility of release in an ecosystem that it would destroy , however there has to be a way to get them for your tank, im not worried about housing it if need be i would buy an ocean liner of a tank or build a plywood one. feeding it cant be more expensive than these snakeheads, so there has to be a way to obtain fry or small pike/walleye, whatever the case may be. I am sure there is a way, rules and regs were made by the government lol there has to be loop holes, maybe if you said it was for reasearch of a local/native species, im gonna call fish and game here in the nxt day or so and find out what they have to say, on another note when i was younger and back in bc, i caught a small mouth bass from a stocked lake, brought him home in my beer cooler and kept him for a whole year and then the next year i relased him in the same lake and i bet that bass never ate so good, im sure i will get poo poo'd for saying so but he was a cool pet for that season, and i thouroghly enjoyd feeding him all sorts of goodies out of my garden. anyways good chat people, i still cant figure out why it would be okay to fop them on the head and eat them or whatever you do with those fish but actaully taking care of it would be no good. I dont get it
  20. Well after much hate mail and such lol i have decided to scraap the thought
  21. haha yeah i know they get big, im not worried, i guess thats gotta be the way happen to know where to look up local hatcheries??
  22. I was sitting here looking at my bullseye snakeheads in my tank and thought why wouldnt a pike or walleye be a cool thing in a tank, pike , vicious and basically eating machines might be a cool thing to try and raise in a tank set up lik local water. so can you ? heat ? like where they live is basically frozen right?, sorry im new to alberta , but im assuming it aint no where near room temp. water chillers??? i dont know but if anyone has any thoughts, ideas, ways to succeed at it perhaps im not the only on, and of course any legal knowledge would be helpful not trying to explain to fish and wildlife that its okay , its for my fish tank , he will be well treated.. lol
