  1. I haven't really noticed to much aggression yet. When I first put them in the male chased the female around all day, they lip locked maybe 2 times. After that the female chased him around nipping him. Now they both are digging like crazy and anyone who comes close to their sites the male chases away. Im pretty sure the third i got was a male and he is very passive, not aggressive at all. The site I read on the net said it can be Hard to make a compatible pair. Maybe it's taking your fish a bit longer to work out the kinks? Here's where I read it http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/cichlid/nicaraguacichlid.php I agree ck the male and female do take care of their off spring like us. I hope they spawn so I can watch their behavior. I'm sure it's just a matter of time now I hope. Jeff
  2. Newbie here trying to upload pics Female working away
  3. I just picked up 3 Nicaragua cichlids yesterday off noot. I rearranged my tank for a few more caves for them and now this morning I noticed that 2 of them have dug out a pit in the sand and are courting with each other. Quite interesting to watch. Of course they chose the middle of the tank to do all of this lol. I'll keep updating as more happens.
  4. Hey I've been following this and other DIY threads on building an aquarium. I'm thinking of doing it aswell. I'm pretty sure you can buy zavlar at home depot or home hardware. I searched it on home hardwares site and they have it. I couldn't get a price cause you need to sign up to their site. But at least it's something that is at our local hardware store.
  5. Thanks very much I'll have to see if I can get my hands on a couple this weekend or in a little while. Thanks again Jeff
  6. Hey thanks for your input helps me decide what to do. I have 3 golds right now there only 2 inches at best. But I really like the coloring of the reds. I do 2 water changes a week to keep everything tidy for them and my rams. Do you by chance remember how much the spotted reds were at riverfront? I might have to convince my wife that I really need them. Lol Thanks Jeff
  7. Thank you for clearing that up for me much appreciated. I will probably go out and get some now and be confident in caring for them. Thanks again much appreciated Jeff
  8. Hey everyone just wondering if the red spotted is harder to care for than just a regular gold or green severum. I've asked big Al's and the guy there said that their touchier than discus, just because their line bred and have a weaker immune system to parasites. But I'm not to sure if he was talking about super reds or just spotted reds. Also riverfront has them labeled as wild red spotted severum which contradicts what the guy at big ALS told me about being line bred in tanks. Any information on their care would be greatly appreciated.
  9. Very nice tanks. IMHO the sand looks better, more of a natural look. Love your cichlids in both. Envious of your 120 and fronts. Gonna show my wife how nice a bigger tank looks. Lol
  10. Wow very inventive and cost effective. Why not use what's around your house. I kinda do the same thing. I use the filter floss from big ALS inside my canister filter and I aswell sew 2 pieces together for my HOB then I add the carbon inside it. Got tired of spending endless amounts of money on the filter pads. Very cool way of making a pad for your filter. Cudos to you
  11. Alright sounds good thanks again
  12. Well after a few very quick casualties I noticed one of my rams had a couple white spots on it. I quickly set up my 10 gal quarantine tank and started medicating right away. Now my question is for my planted 60 gal? There are no fish in the tank, so how long will the Ich live for. Temp is 86 and I've added 2tbls of aquarium salt per gallon. I've read a wide variety on the web saying 1 week to 2 months. But the life cycle of Ich is very quick in these temps. I'd just like reassurance that I can add my fish back when it is Ich free. I have also considered taking it right down and letting everything dry out and do a 5% bleach bath for my plants. And then just cycling the aquarium again with my bumble bee goby and neon tetras. But that might be unnecessary Im not sure.
  13. I will definitely keep that in mind I'm pretty sure I will have to sell my geos when they get to be 6" + but I will see how things work out I've considered only having male apistos aswell. Therefore eliminating the spawning and some aggression. But not to sure if that would be a good idea or not. I will just have to wait and see how things go.
  14. Alright well perfect thanks for your input much appreciated Jeff
  15. Hey everyone just wanted to get opinions and experiences on mixing different species of apistos, if even possible. I am Fairly new to them (6 months). Right now i have 2 male Cacatuoides, 2 gold rams, 2 Bolivian rams, and 3 geophagus surinamensis. My tank is 60 gal and is fairly well planted And I have alot of rocks for caves. Any advice is much appreciated. Jeff
  16. Perfect thanks alot i think I'll get another canister for sure
  17. Sounds good then. What would you recommend or filtration I have a penguin biowheel 350 aswell I just dislike having to constantly buy filters for them it gets pricey after a while. And it has been getting noisy it's 2 years old now. Any suggestions Thank you Jeff
  18. Thanks everyone. Tap water with a little tweak of peat or moss. Sounds good. I think I'll get a little driftwood aswell as plants. All I have are rocks. They stack nice for caves tho. As for types I was thinkin Of cacatuoides either species, Baenchi, viejita, more less whatever Is availiable at the time. But I like these 3. But I was also thinking of rams either Bolivian or German blue and possibly discus with the apistos. Any thoughts? Bad idea? As for filtration I'm just waiting on a eheim 2217 from a guy on kijiji. I will use it on a 60 gal. Will it create to much movement? I read that apistos like calm water and some like it moving just a bit. I'm just unsure.
  19. Very nice. Java moss i will keep that in mind thanks a lot
  20. Hi everyone Im new to the forum here. Just have a couple questions about housing apistos. Mainly what has and hasn't worked for everyone. Do I go with a planted tank? Leaf litter? Will my tap water be ok if it's not on the softer side? I have been doing online research of their natural habitat for a while now. But I still wouldnt mind any input from everyone. And heck It would be nice to be able to talk to others that enjoy their fish aswell. Thanks Jeff
  21. Hey everyone I finally found a local forum!! Looking forward to asking questions and learning From all you pros out there.
