  1. Anyone know of where a person can get a good price on Java moss in the Edmonton area? Many online places do not ship in winter. But if you know of one of them that would work too. Also looking for generally good prices on plants as well so I can work on a few different planted tanks this winter. Thanks

  3. Just got a puffer and I want to make a snail tank but was wondering if it would be possible to breed shrimp in the same tank or would the two species conflict. Thanks...Wendy
  4. Today's my B-day, and I couldn't resist. I did buy a green spotted puffer. So we will see how it goes. I would like to try my hand at raising snails. Does anyone know - can you mix (while breeding each) snails and shrimp. Or does one eat the other's young?
  5. Since I just started out within the last few months, I find aquarium decorations being very expensive. I realize that you can`t just go and pick up some rocks and put them in your tank, but is there any type of more inexpensive rock or bricks that you can buy at landscaping places that would be acceptable? Aside from clay pots, is there anything else that would make good caves, even if temporary until I can buy some real decorations. I notice that petsmart has not bad prices. Wendy
  6. Just wondering, what would be better - gravel or no gravel. I have gravel in my tanks right now and even after vacuuming the gravel and taking 25% of the water that way for a change, there is still a bunch of crap in the gravel. I notice this as I pour the clean water in and inadvertantly stir everything up. I have big fish, oscars, with big poops. So I am wondering if it would be worth it to take out the gravel and let the dirt settle out so I can see it and clean it easier. Thoughts? Wendy
  7. Hi, I have a couple of oscars and one is a very picky eater. I end up feeding them lots of mealworms, a few minnows, and cichlid pellets. I know the minnows are not good for them. They don't like the cichlid pellets very much. They like crickets, but I found one in my laundry room on the other side of the house one day, so I don't want to feed them anymore. I am trying to raise mealworms because they seem to like them the best. I bought some raw shelled shrimp - cut it into pieces and they didn't take to that very much - though the pleco loved it. All you Oscar owners out there - what do you feed your oscars and how much, how often? Thanks for the info. Wendy
  8. Hi there, started fishkeeping about 4 months ago now. Have learned alot and still learning. I am in Leduc. I have yet to figure out what I really want. Went throught the convict cichlid stage already. They are gone now. Found new homes. I have two 55 gallon tanks, one 29 gallon, and two 10 gallon tanks. I have 2 young oscars that I want to get a bigger tank (greater than 120 gallons) for them. I have one beautiful Jack Dempsey. 2 common plecos and a bristlenose pleco. Several mollies (from cycling) and a male betta. 4 apple snails I am thinking about starting up an african cichlid tank. They are very colorful. But I also think about just having a great colorful community tank. I would like to turn one of my 10 gallon tanks into a shrimp tank. I need to do some homework before doing that. I am not sure what to feed shrimp. Also, can you mix different kinds of shrimp? I think it would be nice to have a puffer maybe. Just one 8-12in one. I don`t know how I would handle feeding him though. I am just getting the hang of feeding a complete balanced diet for the oscars. Anyway, hello to everyone and I hope to gain some valuable experience. Wendy
