Thought I'd give people a heads up, just stopped by franco's and they had all their aquaclear filters %50 off. Also most of their cannister filters were on sale for a good price too.
  3. Was in riverfront today and saw they had a tank labeled orange shrimp, nice orange colour. $5 ea but on for %50 off, anyone know anything about these shrimp? They look kinda like a cherry, just orange.
  4. I was looking at putting some of these in my lidless tank. Thanks for the heads up
  5. Had these fish given to me as they were no longer wanted, the owner thought they were cichlids but I'm unsure what they could be. They're very active, darting and cruising around the tank, snatching whatever food I drop in the tank, Sorry for the picture quality, not the best at it.
  6. Pretty sure I saw a couple at piscies last night
  7. Hello all, A little while back I was given a aqua medic turboflotor t1000 protein skimmer from a friend. And while I don't have any saltwater tanks, or plan to, I've read that they're really not any benifit on a freshwater tank. So, I was curious as to what something like that would be worth? I cleaned it all out, except for some of the hoses that I couldn't get into/at, and attempted to hook it up and it seems to function and move water through it though I'm not 100% sure how these things work. Any ideas? Sell it or run it with my freshwater tank? thanks
  8. What wattages do you have availible? I am not sure you will find advantages in an unplanted tank. Two ten dollar clip lights will allow you to view your fish. Why try harder? By retrofitting - your intending to convert an existing t-tube hood to accomadate moguls ? Overhead clearance my present challenges there - some bulbs prefer to burn "base-up". A single ended bulb is enveloped; whereas a double ended bulb will typicly require UV shielding. Do you have central air ? These can run hot - consider cooling fans. Personaly, I will not abide light spill. If you are overpowered the simplest solution is to raise the fixture. This (pre-meditated) is counterproductive. Why pump in extra electricity when it requires shackling to handicap the output? Short answer - yes, it can be done. The highly penatrative light will allow you to produce displays unachievable with other light sources. Ideally you are constructing a fixture that will allow you to produce a light intensity {read - PAR value} that you can manage. From personal experience - below 10 Par only mosses and possibly Naja grass will increase in size below 20 Par ferns will increase in size below 30 Par stem plants can be maintained sustained below 40 Par stem plants will grow with fertilization above 40 Par fertilization and carbon become warranted + 100 Par pressurised CO2 and daily ferting required to abate algae + 200 Par becomes a plant only tank - required CO2 levels will gas fish and the intensity will eventually blind them. Also @ this point you will be dumping about a pound a month of KN03 It can be done - and it can be a beautiful thing. Well by retrofit I guess I ment more 'replace with'. Would be kinda tricky changing tombstones to a mogul base. As for wattages, I got a 150 and a 250. Main thing I was concerned about was the heat as I've always thought they were really very hot. Either way gonna give it a shot when I got some free time and see how it looks. Nice pics btw
  9. I have access to some metal halide fixtures/bulbs through work, and was curious how well they would work in a freshwater planted/unplanted tank. I've heard that they work well in saltwater tanks and would assume they'd work in a freshwater as well. Just figured I'd get some options on whether or not it'd be worth the effort to retrofit some metal halides in place of some florescents?
  10. Saying hi from Calgary NW. New to the forum, but I've been into aquariums for probably the last 3-4 years. Started with a 10gal, and over the last month added a 60gal, 30gal and another 10 gal. Currently I've just got donor fish in the new tanks (guppies in the 10, convicts fry the planted 30 and largerer convicts in the 60) and a betta, 3 danio's and a shrimp in the original 10. Looking forward to tapping the stores of information here as I'm just starting the planted tank and am rather 'green' to the whole planted thing.
