  1. In my experience your best bet is to wait it out. Sometimes sand can stay stirred up for several days before settling down and giving you clear water. Water changes aren't going to help as you're just stirring the substrate up more. No matter what you do it will take a couple days minimum to clear up but you can try and speed up the process by running some sponge filters. These will suck sand sediment into themselves without creating a stream of water into the tank, prolonging the murkiness. On the upside, most fish won't be bothered by this. In the wild it can happen quite naturally and in reality the only irritated party is you, who can't properly view your tank.
  2. Thanks for all the info folks. Sounds like I better hold off on discus until one of my larger tanks frees up. I try to be a responsible fish keeper and definitely don't want to try and cram fish into an unsuitable environment just because I want them. Any other suggestions for the hex that would be more suitable? I have a 75G tropical planted right now with platy's, guppies, corys, hatchetfish, etc... a 90G cichlid tank with strawberry peacocks, malawi blue dolphins, and a nimbochromis livingstonii (possibly the future discus tank as these guys will be outgrowing the 90 in the next year probably), a 10G cherry shrimp farm, and a 20G barb tank. I wanted to do something a little different for the hex. Not really interested in the peaceful tropicals as I've done enough of that. Looking for something interesting and a little more unique.
  3. All jokes aside, sounds like 3 discus could be happy in this tank. Not gonna happen for at least a month as I've been given strict instructions on our fish budget but when I do go all out I'll post pics. Thanks everyone,
  4. I was considering an RO unit for a while. Shopping around though I found you'll get a much cheaper deal ordering online from somewhere like Petsandponds.com or even Amazon. Although, depending on how much RO water you need a week it's pretty cheap just to get the refill jugs from Canadian Tire, SaveOn, etc...
  5. I heard they ship them in old pringles containers
  6. Hey everyone, recently picked up a 30G Hex tank off of Kijiji. Thinking about going with Discus. Just wondering if the tank would be large enough for them. I would only put in 3. Also, would they be happy in such a small group and would I want them to all be the same type or would it be ok to mix different types?
  7. I've had betta's that have done this, they're pretty fun. Nice looking boy in the vase behind the jumping gal too!

    Hey Guys

    Welcome to the forum!
  9. Good work on the fish rescue, hopefully these store owners will learn their lesson and stay out of the fish business. Too many people already buy fish without the proper information, it's sad to hear that an uninformed gas station is now selling them to passers-by. The betta is one thing, but poor danios. What type of danios were they? If you're looking to re-home I may be able to help.
  10. Seems like he looks a lot like our pleco. I thought something was up and it couldn't just be a common but with further research I seem to be dead wrong. Here's what our pleco looks like.
  11. Love the look of the tank, simple yet eye catching. Great choice of fish too, makes me wanna tear down one of my tropical tanks and get to work.
  12. Hey everyone, pretty unsatisfied with the output from the single spray on my Fluval 405. I've seen kits talked about on the internet but never anywhere to buy one (spray bar). Anyone have a decently easy DIY spray bar or know of somewhere to buy one?
  13. Quick question, with the drip method do you siphon it like an old school gravel filter and then control the drip or is their an easier way? Sorry, just never tried the drip method before. Makes sense though.
  14. Aquarium Illusions on the west end builds custom tanks
  15. Hey everyone, been wanting to add some CRS to my cherry shrimp tank for a while now. The shrimp tank is an established, planted 10G and the RCS are thriving in it. My levels in the tank have all tested well, my only concern being with the hardness. I usually just use treated tap water for all my water change outs so naturally using edmonton city water my levels are pretty high in all my tanks. Alot of what I've read up on about the CRS is they can be quite finicky and prefer a softer water (4-6gH). Just wondering if anyone else out there has had much experience with them and whether or not the hardness is something to actually be concerned about with them.

    Hello

    Welcome to the forum darling!
  17. 2 sponge filters actually, the other one's blocked by the light reflection. One is for a 30G the other for a 75G. I stopped running my biowheel when I had my first batch of platy fry and never went back. I've actually had virtually no issues with clamp fin and ich which plagued me for quite a while when running the biowheel.
  18. Just an update on the shrimp tank. Less than a month later and significant plant growth (also a ton of babies). Just an example of an easy setup on a 10G kit. Extra money spent on sponge filter and T5 bulbs that fit the hood. No CO2, although I'm sure that would make it significantly more impressive. Also, plant in front and to the left is just leftovers sent with shrimp from Jvision.
  19. At our house we also only name "special" fish. The first fish to ever be born in my tropical tank and survive to adulthood is a pineapple swordtail who was dubbed Phillip J. Fry after his survival seemed guaranteed. A rubbernose pleco named Dr. Jones, our patriarch guppy father - Ol' Boy and his gigantic successor Sonny. Also a 6" common pleco named Sharka. Used to have an electric blue crayfish named peeps and various koi who were all named.
  20. My favourite part of this entire thread is that it has all taken place on a Saturday night. Makes me feel a little better that the best things I have to do are hang out with my daughter and post on the aquatica forum. Thanks everyone.
  21. Sounds weird, every once in a while somebody claims a guppy platy cross. Don`t know how legit it actually is, would probably need a geneticist to actually come up with a definitive answer. Another possibility is that the guy you bought them from was sold some mollies as platys. They can look very similar sometimes.
  22. As far as anything I`ve ever read or experienced guppies and platy`s cannot crossbreed. What you may have is a crossbreed between a guppy and a molly. Don`t know the logistics and such but in that respect I would say there`s a good chance you may be right on the `mule` aspect. Everything I`ve ever read basically states that a molly and a guppy can breed, or a swordtail and a platy can breed, but not any other combination. Could be wrong, but I don`t think so. Sometimes confusion can arise in a tank as many of these livebearers will actually carry viable male sperm for months on end, so when you see your guppy doing a little dance with a platy female it doesn`t actually mean she was impregnated. She may become pregnant again from a mating that happened months and months ago.
  23. Been a member for a while now and thought I'd post a few of my tanks My 1yr old daughter's barb and tetra 20G 10G planted cherry shrimp tank 75G planted tropical tank. Mostly guppies, swordtails, and amano shrimp mixed with some hatchetfish and a spotted rubbernose pleco One of my mature, pregnant cherry shrimp
  24. Well unfortunately my plan went awry anyways. Figured I'd chuck the loaches in the 90g cichlid tank eventually but after some research it seems that it's not really fair to try and pair Lake Malawi Cichlids with loaches due to their respective water requirements. Thanks for the thoughts though people, might just have to get the old 55g running again for an end loach tank Just gotta put it somewhere the girlfriend won't notice... hmmm...
  25. Have you tried salting the tank? Half dose at first, then gradually increase to full medicinal dose. Might do the trick for the poor fella. If it's a tumor though he's probably done for and euthanization would be kindest. If the growth on the other side is almost in the same spot it's most likely a tumor, fungus should've spread more by now. Poor dude, unfortunately surgery on a betta isn't available yet.
