  1. The time I dropped by nature's corner, they didn't have very much stock or variety.

Is that just because they were running low and normally carry a lot?

Aquarium Central has been my favorite lfs since discovering it and I find they tend to have a good variety... they just got a shipment of plants in last week actually.

  2. Well, I'd ask what the problem is if he's not showing any discomfort.

Bettas, when full, should show a little bulge.

this guy is pretty full and i'd stop feeding him... but nothing to worry about:

    Now, this guy... that's bloated:

What are you feeding him? If it's pellets, they tend to expand after a while... perhaps try soaking them before feeding him.

Edit: this is a good example: http://www.bettatalk.com/food.htm

  3. I'm still looking for a nice blue butterfly too, waiting to hear from mko on this forum or aquarium central... If neither works out, then I'd be interested in importing too.

When I spoke with transhippers... One was offering $80 for shipping a single betta and the other was offering something like $160 for up to 6 bettas.

  4. Sounds like a trip to PJ's might be in order! What type of foam would work for that?

Any filter foam really... nothing too dense. I just have some black filter foam stuck in there. you only need a teensy bit.

For the giant hole, I took a piece of overhead projector transparency, glued it (with crazyglue *shrug*) to the lid... trimmed it around the circle's edge so its nice and flush... then cut some slats in it for air exchange. Done with a hobby knife (fancy xacto knife).

I'm trying to grow some anubias in that spec.. i'm not sure about the lighting in it. There aren't any fish in that tank yet so I think it's low on nutrients.

My other tank with a single betta in it has a bunch of water wisteria which is supposed to grow anywhere... but it seems to be dying :( I'm very new to plants myself.

I don't want to give any incorrect advice so I can't really help you out with plants but the plants bettafishmommy recommended are all great beginner plants.

  5. If you've got an existing cycled (disease-free) tank.. Pull out some filter material and tuck it into your new tank when you get your fishy in there.

That brings the existing nitrogen fixing bacteria from the old tank to the new. This should either fully cycle or at least help you minimize spikes of nitrite.

Just remember not to bring the stuff over to an empty tank for too long as bacteria need to feed on fishy wastes to survive too!

edit: ooo. this assumes that your new 3.5gal and old one have filters! If not... then I'm not sure you can "cycle" them but maybe someone more experienced can chime in.

  6. Hmm if a 2.5gal is "good" then I hope they're okay with the little 2 gals I have. When I get a bigger place I'll get better tanks :(.

Right now though, one has some wisteria and a decoration in it and the other (still waiting for a fishy inhabitant) has some anubias/driftwood to hide or play around in.

I was drawn to the dymax iq3 and fluval spec since they have built in filters in the back... both of them have quite a bit of flow though and require baffling the pump's output.

  7. I've seen my share of good HM jumpers. Once i had two seperated by a divider and as i was watching them one jumped over the divider straight into the other tank luckily i was there to prevent the fight.

A guy at PJs said they tend to use the side of the tank to jump out of and thus wouldn't be able to jump out of a fluval spec... I'm not so sure...

I ended up getting 2 of these tanks (on sale at pjs for $50 plus some random stuff). I'm going to take a piece of overhead projector film and cut some slats in... Then tape or superglue it over the hole in the middle of the lid.

  8. Unfortunately I have had my share of "carpet crispies" with domestic bettas and my feline assistant has, on odd occasion, assisted them with their suicide attempts too. Wild bettas are excellent jumpers and the comparison to popcorn is bang on. Keep your water a bit lower or use some plant cover(yes, duckweed) and they stay in the tanks.

H,m,... So I, mostly interested in HMs and CTs rather than PKs or wilds... I should be pretty safe from jumpers?
