Thanks for the welcome notes. I am not sure what fish I will start with in the salt tank. Just in the process of buying a used tank now. It have already asked a question on this forum and got some good information on my question....... great.

So it may work to keep the water clean with higher WC's but also higher costs. The cost of the Live rock, deep sand beds etc is an upfront cost to reduce operating cost and labour..... makes sense. Now to research costs/benefits of live rock, deep sand beds and denitrators...... thanks for the help.

I have one 75 gal tank with tropical and want to start a salt tank around 50-75 gal size. Have not bought the tank yet. I am new to salt water setups.... am reading the Idots guide to salt water and I have a question. How advisable is it to startup a salt tank without rock/reef and just use mechanical filtration?

Hello everyone. Look forward to learning and sharing information on this forum. We have had outdoor pond for Koy and Goldfish (inside in the winter) for several years. Also have a tank with tropical fish......... nothing fancy just Tetras and Angel fish. I want to set up a salt water tank over the next several months and I thought this would be a good place to learn more as I have more time since retiring.
