  1. I'm not sure, but at rest it kind of looks like it I think. However, he is supposedly a delta according to what was written on the tank, and from my understanding a rose tail is an extreme halfmoon which means he couldn't be a rose tail if he is a delta. He won't flare for me to see if he really is a delta or a halfmoon though! With all those ruffles and overlapping, heavy finnage it seems to me to be more likely he's a halfmoon. I'm an amateur betta keeper though, so I don't know much about tail types and such. If someone with more experience wants to pipe in an say what they think he is, that would be more than welcomed!!! ETA: The white-ish scales around his mouth/under his "chin" and part of his belly has turned to a copper colour. Is this normal? ETA Again: Pictures of him showing off the ruffles. Maybe they'll help determine tail type?
  2. Hey there! I haven't been on in quite a while (darn life being too busy), but I thought I'd come and introduce my new boy that I picked up from Aquarium Central yesterday! I saw him on the weekend and was just dying to pick him up, but I didn't have a tank and I've been told "No More!!"...so I had to leave him behind. On Sunday night, my little veiltail passed away unexpectedly (I have yet to figure out why), so I cleaned out the tank, set it back up (new adventure with a live plant!), and raced out to get him in hopes he was still there. He was marked as a delta tail but I have yet to see him flare his beautiful fins! He just gives me a fish shrug when I hold up the mirror and swims away lol. Anyways, here he is! Name suggestions welcome! Sorry for the big photos!
  3. Well, I think I've figured out why he has a big belly. He looks like he's constantly overfull, even with me backing off his feedings a bit. Today, I noticed that there were some little sand pebbles in his floating log which seemed a bit strange. They were too big to float up there I'm thinking, so I'm pondering as to whether he's brought them from the bottom of the tank and spit them out in there. I changed his water out and tried to get those pebbles out of his log but I missed one apparently. I filled the tank back up, put his log in which he immediately went to and there it was....he gobbled down a little piece of rock sitting in the log. He's only been in this tank a few weeks and it has a sand base which his last tank didn't have. So, I think I figured out the mystery of the piggy betta. I hope that he'll be okay after eating that...
  4. I was mainly curious as to why this is happening because I've just never seen him look like this before and his feelings haven't changed; I suppose out of curiousity mainly. He does get pellets and the occasional frozen bloodworm treat, so I'll be sure to soak the pellets from now on. I've been feeding him less and yet his big belly is staying the same so I found that odd. Thanks for the links and the pictures; definitely nice to have that as a reference . As of now I'm not too worried as he isn't gigantic like the bloated one in the picture. He's still being a happy fellow as well. I appreciate your advice, thanks again! (and yep, he's a he )
  5. Hey everyone. I have a betta health question for you guys. I have a cute little veil tail betta who has had some bloating issues this week. I'm going to say its a food related bloat and not dropsy because it went away for a day and his scales aren't "pineconing" at all. The first morning I noticed I didn't feed him for 24 hours and it went away completely. The next night I gave him a little food that he gobbled down but he's bloated right up again today, slightly worse that before. I didn't give him a full feeding yesterday either. He's not showing any discomfort, is wiggling around the tank when I go up to it and I'm sure he'd eat if I gave him the opportunity. He hasn't shown this issue before in the 4-5 months I've had him. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it in the future? Thanks!
  6. He's beautiful! That's a really interesting color pattern on him
  7. Thanks he's quite the character now that he's warming up to me. The tank is just a little Marina tank. I'm using it until my other tank cycles then I'll be moving him to my 5 gal. I'm hoping to move him within the month.
  8. Hey everyone! Picked up this guy from Aquarium Central last week and I just had to share!
  9. Aw thanks, Im glad to have found another too. He's pretty cute. He's a halfmoon but his tail looks almost like a rosetail but I'm not totally sure. Still neat though, and his fins are nice and full too . I tried to get pictures but he wasn't cooperating at all haha.
  10. So I went back to Aquarium Central and found a beautiful (obviously XD) halfmoon. Hopefully this one will stay in the tank once I get him in there. He's going to stay in my temporary tank until I get a better lid for the other one. I also picked up a couple little Japanese blue swordtail guppies....totally neat fish! I just couldn't pass them up. Pictures of the new betta will be coming soon!
  11. Haha I had quite some trouble choosing too. Buuuut it looks like I might have to go shopping again. I left my house late last night and this morning I got a text from my mom... My new little guy I got last night has disappeared. Literally. He's in a 5 gal filtered tank which I rigged a plexiglas lid up for. The only gap is about half an inch, maybe an inch, right next to the filter. He's not in the filter, not in a plant. Not even on the ground. So I'm stumped. Is it possible he found a way out of that tiny gap beside the filter? I have no idea but I'm very sad about this . I'm just stumped. Apparently I got a Houdini fish
  12. Thanks everyone for all your help! . I went to Aquarium Central today and got a gorgeous little guy; thanks for recommending them! I couldn't believe the stock of bettas they have there...totally overwhelming. That just may have become my new favourite store. It was hard to come home with just one!
  13. Hi everyone, I have a tank set up that I'm looking to inhabit with another betta (it's turning into an addiction! ) . However, I've been looking high and low for a halfmoon betta, or even a delta, that I like or that is in good shape and I've been having great difficulty. I'm now considering buying overseas (aquabid) but am a bit hesitant. I was wondering if the price to get just one would be astronomical (considering shipping fees for a single little guy)? Is it even possible for them to make it here in good shape considering our winters? It seems people have had loads of success with aquabid so that makes me more inclined to buy from there. I'd be more than okay with buying locally of course, so if someone could possibly recommend or knows of a local breeder that would be fabulous. Thanks for your help in advance
  14. Sounds like a trip to PJ's might be in order! What type of foam would work for that? Also, I wanted to ask about live plants for bettas. What types of plants do they like the best? And, are those plants difficult to maintain?
  15. I agree. The tank I have now for my betta was for my office, but I've since brought him home so I'd like to pamper him a bit more . I do 50% changes about twice a week. Sometimes I have to leave him for a little longer than I'd like because of, one, my schedule (sometimes I'm not home on his water change days), and, two, I have limited access to tap water - I live in the country so I have to get tap water from the city.
